Expand cos(u plus or minus v) and sin(u plus or minus v) by the addition formulas, using parity for the minus sign, and add or subtract.

Proof

Routine facts are used without comment (Routine Facts, Continued: Typed Arithmetic, Maps and Predicativity).

The four expansions. The addition formulas Addition Formulas for Sine and Cosine (i) and Addition Formulas for Sine and Cosine (ii), applied with a=ua=u and x=vx=v, give

cos⁑(u+v)=cos⁑ucos⁑vβˆ’sin⁑usin⁑v,sin⁑(u+v)=sin⁑ucos⁑v+cos⁑usin⁑v.\cos(u+v)=\cos u\cos v-\sin u\sin v,\qquad \sin(u+v)=\sin u\cos v+\cos u\sin v .

Applied with a=ua=u and x=βˆ’vx=-v, they give cos⁑(uβˆ’v)=cos⁑ucos⁑(βˆ’v)βˆ’sin⁑usin⁑(βˆ’v)\cos(u-v)=\cos u\cos(-v)-\sin u\sin(-v) and sin⁑(uβˆ’v)=sin⁑ucos⁑(βˆ’v)+cos⁑usin⁑(βˆ’v)\sin(u-v)=\sin u\cos(-v)+\cos u\sin(-v). Since the cosine is even and the sine is odd, cos⁑(βˆ’v)=cos⁑v\cos(-v)=\cos v and sin⁑(βˆ’v)=βˆ’sin⁑v\sin(-v)=-\sin v (Values at Zero, Parity and Double-Angle Identities for Sine and Cosine (ii)), and these become

cos⁑(uβˆ’v)=cos⁑ucos⁑v+sin⁑usin⁑v,sin⁑(uβˆ’v)=sin⁑ucos⁑vβˆ’cos⁑usin⁑v.\cos(u-v)=\cos u\cos v+\sin u\sin v,\qquad \sin(u-v)=\sin u\cos v-\cos u\sin v .

Sums and differences. Adding the two expansions of the cosine, the terms ±sin⁑usin⁑v\pm\sin u\sin v cancel:

cos⁑(uβˆ’v)+cos⁑(u+v)=2cos⁑ucos⁑v,\cos(u-v)+\cos(u+v)=2\cos u\cos v ,

which is (i). Subtracting cos⁑(u+v)\cos(u+v) from cos⁑(uβˆ’v)\cos(u-v), the terms cos⁑ucos⁑v\cos u\cos v cancel instead:

cos⁑(uβˆ’v)βˆ’cos⁑(u+v)=2sin⁑usin⁑v,\cos(u-v)-\cos(u+v)=2\sin u\sin v ,

which is (ii). Finally, adding the two expansions of the sine, the terms ±cos⁑usin⁑v\pm\cos u\sin v cancel:

sin⁑(u+v)+sin⁑(uβˆ’v)=2sin⁑ucos⁑v,\sin(u+v)+\sin(u-v)=2\sin u\cos v ,

which is (iii).
