The null-set criterion is the section formula for the product measure combined with the vanishing criterion for integrals of nonnegative functions; the swap formula holds because the image measure agrees with μ⊗ν on rectangles, so uniqueness of the product measure applies.

Proof

Proof of (i). Let E∈F⊗GE\in\mathcal{F}\otimes\mathcal{G}. By Existence and Uniqueness of the Product Measure (iii), the function x↦ν(Ex)x\mapsto\nu(E_{x}) lies in M+(X,F)\mathcal{M}^{+}(X,\mathcal{F}) and

(μ⊗ν)(E)=∫Xν(Ex) dμ(x).(\mu\otimes\nu)(E)=\int_{X}\nu(E_{x})\,d\mu(x).

By The Lebesgue Integral and Null Sets (iv), this integral is 00 if and only if ν(Ex)=0\nu(E_{x})=0 for μ\mu-almost every x∈Xx\in X. Likewise, by the second formula of Existence and Uniqueness of the Product Measure (iii), the function y↦μ(Ey)y\mapsto\mu(E^{y}) lies in M+(Y,G)\mathcal{M}^{+}(Y,\mathcal{G}) and

(μ⊗ν)(E)=∫Yμ(Ey) dν(y),(\mu\otimes\nu)(E)=\int_{Y}\mu(E^{y})\,d\nu(y),

and by The Lebesgue Integral and Null Sets (iv) on (Y,G,ν)(Y,\mathcal{G},\nu) this integral is 00 if and only if μ(Ey)=0\mu(E^{y})=0 for ν\nu-almost every y∈Yy\in Y.

Proof of (ii). As ss is (G⊗F)/(F⊗G)(\mathcal{G}\otimes\mathcal{F})/(\mathcal{F}\otimes\mathcal{G})-measurable, s−1(E)∈G⊗Fs^{-1}(E)\in\mathcal{G}\otimes\mathcal{F} for every E∈F⊗GE\in\mathcal{F}\otimes\mathcal{G}, and the image measure ρ=(ν⊗μ)∘s−1\rho=(\nu\otimes\mu)\circ s^{-1} of ν⊗μ\nu\otimes\mu under ss, the function E↦(ν⊗μ)(s−1(E))E\mapsto(\nu\otimes\mu)(s^{-1}(E)) on F⊗G\mathcal{F}\otimes\mathcal{G}, is a measure on (X×Y,F⊗G)(X\times Y,\mathcal{F}\otimes\mathcal{G}) (Image Measures and Measures with a Density: Measures, Integrals and Change of Variables (i)). For A∈FA\in\mathcal{F} and B∈GB\in\mathcal{G} we have s−1(A×B)=B×As^{-1}(A\times B)=B\times A (Rectangles, Sections and the Swap: Set Identities (iv)), so by the rectangle property of the product measure ν⊗μ\nu\otimes\mu (Product Measure (i))

ρ(A×B)=(ν⊗μ)(B×A)=ν(B) μ(A)=μ(A) ν(B).\rho(A\times B)=(\nu\otimes\mu)(B\times A)=\nu(B)\,\mu(A)=\mu(A)\,\nu(B).

Thus ρ\rho is a measure on (X×Y,F⊗G)(X\times Y,\mathcal{F}\otimes\mathcal{G}) with the rectangle property of Existence and Uniqueness of the Product Measure (i), and the uniqueness there gives ρ=μ⊗ν\rho=\mu\otimes\nu.
