Checks the three topology axioms directly, intersecting the two open boxes found around a point of a binary intersection.

Proof

For subsets UU of XX and VV of YY, every element of UΓ—VU\times V is an ordered pair (u,v)(u,v) with u∈Uu\in U and v∈Vv\in V by The Cartesian Product of Two Classes Β§product, and (u,v)∈UΓ—V(u,v)\in U\times V if and only if u∈Uu\in U and v∈Vv\in V by Membership in a Cartesian Product, and the Cartesian Product of Two Sets Is a Set Β§membership. Membership in a union ⋃S\bigcup\mathcal{S} and in a power set is as in The Union Set and the Power Set of a Set Β§union and The Union Set and the Power Set of a Set Β§power. XΓ—YX\times Y is a set by Membership in a Cartesian Product, and the Cartesian Product of Two Sets Is a Set Β§set, and by its definition TXΓ—Y\mathcal{T}_{X\times Y} is a subset of P(XΓ—Y)\mathcal{P}(X\times Y), as Topological Space Β§topology requires; we check the conditions Topological Space Β§empty-whole, Topological Space Β§unions and Topological Space Β§intersections.

Empty set and whole set. The subset βˆ…\emptyset of XΓ—YX\times Y has no elements, so the condition defining TXΓ—Y\mathcal{T}_{X\times Y} holds for it vacuously and βˆ…βˆˆTXΓ—Y\emptyset\in\mathcal{T}_{X\times Y}. By Topological Space Β§empty-whole, X∈TXX\in\mathcal{T}_{X} and Y∈TYY\in\mathcal{T}_{Y}; for all x∈Xx\in X and y∈Yy\in Y with (x,y)∈XΓ—Y(x,y)\in X\times Y the sets U=XU=X and V=YV=Y satisfy x∈Ux\in U, y∈Vy\in V and UΓ—VβŠ†XΓ—YU\times V\subseteq X\times Y. Hence XΓ—Y∈TXΓ—YX\times Y\in\mathcal{T}_{X\times Y}.

Unions. Let S\mathcal{S} be a subset of TXΓ—Y\mathcal{T}_{X\times Y}. Every element of ⋃S\bigcup\mathcal{S} lies in some W∈SW\in\mathcal{S}, and WβŠ†XΓ—YW\subseteq X\times Y, so ⋃S∈P(XΓ—Y)\bigcup\mathcal{S}\in\mathcal{P}(X\times Y). Let x∈Xx\in X and y∈Yy\in Y with (x,y)βˆˆβ‹ƒS(x,y)\in\bigcup\mathcal{S}, and take W∈SW\in\mathcal{S} with (x,y)∈W(x,y)\in W. Since W∈TXΓ—YW\in\mathcal{T}_{X\times Y}, there are U∈TXU\in\mathcal{T}_{X} and V∈TYV\in\mathcal{T}_{Y} with x∈Ux\in U, y∈Vy\in V and UΓ—VβŠ†WβŠ†β‹ƒSU\times V\subseteq W\subseteq\bigcup\mathcal{S}. Hence ⋃S∈TXΓ—Y\bigcup\mathcal{S}\in\mathcal{T}_{X\times Y}.

Intersections. Let W1,W2∈TXΓ—YW_{1},W_{2}\in\mathcal{T}_{X\times Y}; then W1∩W2∈P(XΓ—Y)W_{1}\cap W_{2}\in\mathcal{P}(X\times Y). Let x∈Xx\in X and y∈Yy\in Y with (x,y)∈W1∩W2(x,y)\in W_{1}\cap W_{2}. Take U1∈TXU_{1}\in\mathcal{T}_{X} and V1∈TYV_{1}\in\mathcal{T}_{Y} with x∈U1x\in U_{1}, y∈V1y\in V_{1} and U1Γ—V1βŠ†W1U_{1}\times V_{1}\subseteq W_{1}, and then U2∈TXU_{2}\in\mathcal{T}_{X} and V2∈TYV_{2}\in\mathcal{T}_{Y} with x∈U2x\in U_{2}, y∈V2y\in V_{2} and U2Γ—V2βŠ†W2U_{2}\times V_{2}\subseteq W_{2}. Put U=U1∩U2U=U_{1}\cap U_{2} and V=V1∩V2V=V_{1}\cap V_{2}. Then U∈TXU\in\mathcal{T}_{X} and V∈TYV\in\mathcal{T}_{Y} by Topological Space Β§intersections, x∈Ux\in U and y∈Vy\in V. An element of UΓ—VU\times V is a pair (u,v)(u,v) with u∈Uu\in U and v∈Vv\in V; for each i∈{1,2}i\in\{1,2\}, u∈Uiu\in U_{i} and v∈Viv\in V_{i}, so (u,v)∈UiΓ—ViβŠ†Wi(u,v)\in U_{i}\times V_{i}\subseteq W_{i}. Thus UΓ—VβŠ†W1∩W2U\times V\subseteq W_{1}\cap W_{2}, and W1∩W2∈TXΓ—YW_{1}\cap W_{2}\in\mathcal{T}_{X\times Y}.

The three conditions hold, so TXΓ—Y\mathcal{T}_{X\times Y} is a topology on XΓ—YX\times Y by Topological Space Β§topology.
