The norm bound and lower bound come from the wall energy and the penalty lower bound; compactness combines weak-star sequential compactness with two applications of Bolzano-Weierstrass and the closed sublevel sets of both terms; monotonicity of the score splits by real linearity of the pairings into the wall force part and the conjugate variable part.

Proof

Each result cited is applied with the data of its own statement. By The Wall-Confined Free Energy and Its Score §energy, D=D0∩DR\mathcal{D}=\mathcal{D}_{0}\cap\mathcal{D}_{R} and E(λ)=E0(λ)+WR(λ)\mathcal{E}(\lambda)=\mathcal{E}_{0}(\lambda)+\mathcal{W}_{R}(\lambda) for λ∈D\lambda\in\mathcal{D}.

Step 1 (Claim 1). By The Wall Energy: Finiteness Forces the Norm Bound, Closed Sublevel Sets, and Monotonicity of the Wall Force along Couplings §norm-bound, DR⊆Σd,R\mathcal{D}_{R}\subseteq\Sigma_{d,R} and WR(λ)≥0\mathcal{W}_{R}(\lambda)\ge0 for λ∈DR\lambda\in\mathcal{D}_{R}. Hence D⊆DR⊆Σd,R\mathcal{D}\subseteq\mathcal{D}_{R}\subseteq\Sigma_{d,R} and D⊆D0∩Σd,R\mathcal{D}\subseteq\mathcal{D}_{0}\cap\Sigma_{d,R}. By Free Entropy Penalties: Displacement Convexity with Minus the Conjugate Variables as Gradient §lower for this RR there is a real ee with e≤E0(λ)e\le\mathcal{E}_{0}(\lambda) for every λ∈D0∩Σd,R\lambda\in\mathcal{D}_{0}\cap\Sigma_{d,R}. For λ∈D\lambda\in\mathcal{D} therefore E(λ)=E0(λ)+WR(λ)≥e+0=e\mathcal{E}(\lambda)=\mathcal{E}_{0}(\lambda)+\mathcal{W}_{R}(\lambda)\ge e+0=e. This proves claim 1; the ee fixed here is used below.

Step 2 (Facts on indices). Let (ni)i∈N(n_{i})_{i\in\mathbb{N}} and (ri)i∈N(r_{i})_{i\in\mathbb{N}} be strictly increasing sequences in N\mathbb{N} in the sense of Subsequence of a Sequence in a Set. (i) ni<nkn_{i}<n_{k} whenever i<ki<k: by induction on kk, the case k=i+1k=i+1 is the definition, and ni<nk<nk+1n_{i}<n_{k}<n_{k+1}. Consequently (nri)i∈N(n_{r_{i}})_{i\in\mathbb{N}} is strictly increasing, since ri<ri+1r_{i}<r_{i+1} gives nri<nri+1n_{r_{i}}<n_{r_{i+1}}. (ii) i≤rii\le r_{i} for every ii: 1≤r11\le r_{1} since r1∈N={1,2,3,… }r_{1}\in\mathbb{N}=\{1,2,3,\dots\} (Natural Numbers), and i≤ri<ri+1i\le r_{i}<r_{i+1} gives i+1≤ri+1i+1\le r_{i+1}. (iii) If a real sequence (ai)(a_{i}) converges to aa in the sense of Limit of a Sequence of Real Numbers, then so does (ari)i(a_{r_{i}})_{i}: given ε>0\varepsilon>0 and NN with ∣ai−a∣<ε|a_{i}-a|<\varepsilon for i≥Ni\ge N, (ii) gives ri≥i≥Nr_{i}\ge i\ge N, hence ∣ari−a∣<ε|a_{r_{i}}-a|<\varepsilon, for i≥Ni\ge N. (iv) For N∈NN\in\mathbb{N} the index sequence t↦N+tt\mapsto N+t is strictly increasing, so a tail (yN+t)t∈N(y_{N+t})_{t\in\mathbb{N}} of a sequence (yi)(y_{i}) is a subsequence of it.

Step 3 (Extraction). Let cc and (λm)(\lambda_{m}) be as in claim 2. For every mm, Step 1 gives λm∈Σd,R\lambda_{m}\in\Sigma_{d,R}, e≤E0(λm)e\le\mathcal{E}_{0}(\lambda_{m}) and 0≤WR(λm)0\le\mathcal{W}_{R}(\lambda_{m}), and E0(λm)+WR(λm)=E(λm)≤c\mathcal{E}_{0}(\lambda_{m})+\mathcal{W}_{R}(\lambda_{m})=\mathcal{E}(\lambda_{m})\le c; hence

e≤E0(λm)≤c,0≤WR(λm)≤c−e.e\le\mathcal{E}_{0}(\lambda_{m})\le c,\qquad0\le\mathcal{W}_{R}(\lambda_{m})\le c-e.

With M=∣e∣+∣c∣+1>0M=|e|+|c|+1>0 both real sequences (E0(λm))m(\mathcal{E}_{0}(\lambda_{m}))_{m} and (WR(λm))m(\mathcal{W}_{R}(\lambda_{m}))_{m} satisfy ∣⋅∣≤M|\cdot|\le M, so they and all their subsequences are bounded in the sense of Bounded Sequence of Real Numbers. By Sequential Weak-Star Compactness of the Noncommutative Laws with a Given Norm Bound §compact there are a strictly increasing (kl)l∈N(k_{l})_{l\in\mathbb{N}} and λ∈Σd,R\lambda\in\Sigma_{d,R} with λkl→λ\lambda_{k_{l}}\to\lambda weak-star. By Bolzano-Weierstrass Theorem for Real Sequences, applied to (E0(λkl))l(\mathcal{E}_{0}(\lambda_{k_{l}}))_{l}, there are a strictly increasing (li)i∈N(l_{i})_{i\in\mathbb{N}} and a real aa with E0(λkli)→a\mathcal{E}_{0}(\lambda_{k_{l_{i}}})\to a as i→∞i\to\infty. By the same theorem, applied to (WR(λkli))i(\mathcal{W}_{R}(\lambda_{k_{l_{i}}}))_{i}, there are a strictly increasing (rt)t∈N(r_{t})_{t\in\mathbb{N}} and a real bb with WR(λklrt)→b\mathcal{W}_{R}(\lambda_{k_{l_{r_{t}}}})\to b as t→∞t\to\infty. In both applications the conclusion is a subsequence in the sense of Subsequence of a Sequence of Real Numbers, given by a strictly increasing sequence of positive integers indexed by the positive integers; as the positive integers are the natural numbers N={1,2,3,… }\mathbb{N}=\{1,2,3,\dots\} of Natural Numbers, (li)(l_{i}) and (rt)(r_{t}) are strictly increasing sequences in N\mathbb{N} and the extracted sequences are subsequences in the sense of Subsequence of a Sequence in a Set. Put mt=klrtm_{t}=k_{l_{r_{t}}}, at=E0(λmt)a_{t}=\mathcal{E}_{0}(\lambda_{m_{t}}) and bt=WR(λmt)b_{t}=\mathcal{W}_{R}(\lambda_{m_{t}}). By Step 2(i), applied twice, (mt)(m_{t}) and (lrt)(l_{r_{t}}) are strictly increasing. Thus (λmt)t(\lambda_{m_{t}})_{t} is a subsequence of (λkl)l(\lambda_{k_{l}})_{l} and converges weak-star to λ\lambda by Sequential Weak-Star Compactness of the Noncommutative Laws with a Given Norm Bound §unique; at→aa_{t}\to a by Step 2(iii); and bt→bb_{t}\to b by construction. Also λ∈Σd\lambda\in\Sigma_{d} by Noncommutative Laws of Finitely Many Self-Adjoint Variables with a Norm Bound §law.

Step 4 (λ∈D0\lambda\in\mathcal{D}_{0} and E0(λ)≤a\mathcal{E}_{0}(\lambda)\le a). Let ε>0\varepsilon>0 be real, and choose NN with ∣at−a∣<ε|a_{t}-a|<\varepsilon, hence at≤a+εa_{t}\le a+\varepsilon, for t≥Nt\ge N. By Step 2(iv) and Sequential Weak-Star Compactness of the Noncommutative Laws with a Given Norm Bound §unique, the tail (λmN+t)t∈N(\lambda_{m_{N+t}})_{t\in\mathbb{N}} converges weak-star to λ∈Σd\lambda\in\Sigma_{d}; it lies in D⊆D0∩Σd,R\mathcal{D}\subseteq\mathcal{D}_{0}\cap\Sigma_{d,R} by Step 1, and E0(λmN+t)≤a+ε\mathcal{E}_{0}(\lambda_{m_{N+t}})\le a+\varepsilon for every tt. By Free Entropy Penalties: Displacement Convexity with Minus the Conjugate Variables as Gradient §closed, applied with RR and the real a+εa+\varepsilon in place of cc, λ∈D0\lambda\in\mathcal{D}_{0} and E0(λ)≤a+ε\mathcal{E}_{0}(\lambda)\le a+\varepsilon. As ε>0\varepsilon>0 was arbitrary, E0(λ)≤a\mathcal{E}_{0}(\lambda)\le a by Comparison of Real Numbers with Arbitrary Positive Slack §slack-above.

Step 5 (λ∈DR\lambda\in\mathcal{D}_{R} and WR(λ)≤b\mathcal{W}_{R}(\lambda)\le b). Let ε>0\varepsilon>0 be real, and choose NN with bt≤b+εb_{t}\le b+\varepsilon for t≥Nt\ge N. As in Step 4 the tail (λmN+t)t∈N(\lambda_{m_{N+t}})_{t\in\mathbb{N}} lies in DR\mathcal{D}_{R}, satisfies WR(λmN+t)≤b+ε\mathcal{W}_{R}(\lambda_{m_{N+t}})\le b+\varepsilon and converges weak-star to λ∈Σd\lambda\in\Sigma_{d}. By The Wall Energy: Finiteness Forces the Norm Bound, Closed Sublevel Sets, and Monotonicity of the Wall Force along Couplings §closed, applied with the real b+εb+\varepsilon in place of cc, λ∈DR\lambda\in\mathcal{D}_{R} and WR(λ)≤b+ε\mathcal{W}_{R}(\lambda)\le b+\varepsilon. Hence WR(λ)≤b\mathcal{W}_{R}(\lambda)\le b by Comparison of Real Numbers with Arbitrary Positive Slack §slack-above.

Step 6 (Claim 2). By Steps 4 and 5, λ∈D0∩DR=D\lambda\in\mathcal{D}_{0}\cap\mathcal{D}_{R}=\mathcal{D}. The real sequence E(λmt)=at+bt\mathcal{E}(\lambda_{m_{t}})=a_{t}+b_{t} converges to a+ba+b by claim 1 (Sums) of Arithmetic of Limits of Real Sequences, and

E(λ)=E0(λ)+WR(λ)≤a+b=lim⁡t→∞E(λmt).\mathcal{E}(\lambda)=\mathcal{E}_{0}(\lambda)+\mathcal{W}_{R}(\lambda)\le a+b=\lim_{t\to\infty}\mathcal{E}(\lambda_{m_{t}}).

Together with Step 3 this proves claim 2, with the strictly increasing sequence (mt)(m_{t}) and the law λ\lambda.

Step 7 (Real linearity of the coupling pairings). Let μ,ν∈Σd\mu,\nu\in\Sigma_{d}, γ∈Π(μ,ν)\gamma\in\Pi(\mu,\nu), and ζ,ζ′∈Hμd\zeta,\zeta'\in\mathcal{H}_{\mu}^{d}; write ζ−ζ′\zeta-\zeta' for the componentwise difference. For j∈[d]j\in[d], Vγ1(ζj−ζj′)=Vγ1ζj−Vγ1ζj′V^{1}_{\gamma}(\zeta_{j}-\zeta'_{j})=V^{1}_{\gamma}\zeta_{j}-V^{1}_{\gamma}\zeta'_{j} since Vγ1V^{1}_{\gamma} is linear (Marginal Isometries, Bounded Plans and Displacement Pairings for Noncommutative Laws §isometries); the inner product is conjugate-linear in its first argument (Complex Hilbert Spaces and Bounded Linear Maps: Standing Notation §spaces) and −1‾=−1\overline{-1}=-1, so ⟨u−u′,v⟩=⟨u,v⟩−⟨u′,v⟩\langle u-u',v\rangle=\langle u,v\rangle-\langle u',v\rangle; and Re⁡\operatorname{Re} is additive with Re⁡(−z)=−Re⁡z\operatorname{Re}(-z)=-\operatorname{Re}z. Summing over jj in Marginal Isometries, Bounded Plans and Displacement Pairings for Noncommutative Laws §coupling-pairing,

Jγ1(ζ−ζ′)=Jγ1(ζ)−Jγ1(ζ′),\mathcal{J}^{1}_{\gamma}(\zeta-\zeta')=\mathcal{J}^{1}_{\gamma}(\zeta)-\mathcal{J}^{1}_{\gamma}(\zeta'),

and in the same way Jγ2(η−η′)=Jγ2(η)−Jγ2(η′)\mathcal{J}^{2}_{\gamma}(\eta-\eta')=\mathcal{J}^{2}_{\gamma}(\eta)-\mathcal{J}^{2}_{\gamma}(\eta') for η,η′∈Hνd\eta,\eta'\in\mathcal{H}_{\nu}^{d}, using Vγ2V^{2}_{\gamma}.

Step 8 (Claim 3). Let μ,ν∈DΞ\mu,\nu\in\mathcal{D}_{\Xi} and let γ∈Π(μ,ν)\gamma\in\Pi(\mu,\nu) be optimal. By The Wall-Confined Free Energy and Its Score §score, μ,ν∈D⊆D0⊆Σd\mu,\nu\in\mathcal{D}\subseteq\mathcal{D}_{0}\subseteq\Sigma_{d}, both have conjugate variables ξμ,ξν\xi_{\mu},\xi_{\nu} and square-integrable wall forces FR(μ),FR(ν)F^{R}(\mu),F^{R}(\nu) of radius RR, and Ξ(μ)=FR(μ)−ξμ\Xi(\mu)=F^{R}(\mu)-\xi_{\mu}, Ξ(ν)=FR(ν)−ξν\Xi(\nu)=F^{R}(\nu)-\xi_{\nu} componentwise. By Step 7,

Jγ1(Ξ(μ))−Jγ2(Ξ(ν))=[Jγ1(FR(μ))−Jγ2(FR(ν))]−[Jγ1(ξμ)−Jγ2(ξν)].\mathcal{J}^{1}_{\gamma}\bigl(\Xi(\mu)\bigr)-\mathcal{J}^{2}_{\gamma}\bigl(\Xi(\nu)\bigr)=\Bigl[\mathcal{J}^{1}_{\gamma}\bigl(F^{R}(\mu)\bigr)-\mathcal{J}^{2}_{\gamma}\bigl(F^{R}(\nu)\bigr)\Bigr]-\Bigl[\mathcal{J}^{1}_{\gamma}(\xi_{\mu})-\mathcal{J}^{2}_{\gamma}(\xi_{\nu})\Bigr].

The first bracket is ≥0\ge0 by The Wall Energy: Finiteness Forces the Norm Bound, Closed Sublevel Sets, and Monotonicity of the Wall Force along Couplings §monotone, which applies to the coupling γ\gamma of the laws μ,ν\mu,\nu with square-integrable wall forces of radius RR. The second bracket is ≤0\le0 by The Conjugate Variables of a Free Entropy Penalty are Displacement Monotone along Optimal Couplings §monotone, which applies since μ,ν∈D0\mu,\nu\in\mathcal{D}_{0} have conjugate variables and γ\gamma is optimal. Hence the left side is ≥0\ge0, which is claim 3. □\square
