TheoremBase

Both clauses follow from trichotomy, the description of the order below n+1, and the fact that a≤b means a<b or a=b.

Proof

For (i): by Arithmetic and Order of the Natural Numbers (vii), exactly one of m<nm<n, m=nm=n and n<mn<m holds. Since m<nm<n fails, n<mn<m or n=mn=m, and so n≤mn\le m by Arithmetic and Order of the Natural Numbers (vi), which gives a≤ba\le b if and only if a<ba<b or a=ba=b.

For (ii): if m<n+1m<n+1, then m<nm<n or m=nm=n by Induction for Predicative Formulas, and the Order of ℕ below 1 and below n+1 (iii), and hence m≤nm\le n by Arithmetic and Order of the Natural Numbers (vi).
