For b∈Rn let Tb:Rn→Rn, Tb(x)=x+b, and let S:Rn→Rn, S(x)=−x; componentwise, Tb(x)i=xi+bi and S(x)i=−xi.
Step 1: boxes and measurability. For c,d∈Rn,
Tb−1(R(c,d))=R(c−b,d−b),S−1(R(c,d))=R(−d,−c),
since ci<xi+bi<di if and only if ci−bi<xi<di−bi, and ci<−xi<di if and only if −di<xi<−ci. Open boxes lie in B(Rn) and generate it (Existence and Uniqueness of Lebesgue Measure on ℝⁿ (i)), so Tb and S are B(Rn)/B(Rn)-measurable (Measurable Maps: Generators, Composition, Continuous Maps, Restrictions, and Criteria for Real- and [0,∞]-Valued Maps (i)).
Step 2: invariance of λn. The image measures λn∘Tb−1 and λn∘S−1 are measures on (Rn,B(Rn)) (Image Measures and Measures with a Density: Measures, Integrals and Change of Variables (i)). Let c,d∈Rn with ci<di for every i∈[n]; then also ci−bi<di−bi and −di<−ci, and by Step 1 and Lebesgue Measure on Rn (i),
(λn∘Tb−1)(R(c,d))=i=1∏n((di−bi)−(ci−bi))=i=1∏n(di−ci),
(λn∘S−1)(R(c,d))=i=1∏n((−ci)−(−di))=i=1∏n(di−ci).
These are the values that characterise λn, so by the uniqueness in Existence and Uniqueness of Lebesgue Measure on ℝⁿ (iii),
λn∘Tb−1=λnfor every b∈Rn,λn∘S−1=λn.(∗)
Step 3: sets. For B⊆Rn, x∈T−a−1(B) means x−a∈B, that is, x=y+a with y∈B; and x∈S−1(B) means −x∈B, that is, x∈−B. So
B+a=T−a−1(B),−B=S−1(B).
For B∈B(Rn) both sets are therefore Borel by Step 1, and by (∗)
λn(B+a)=(λn∘T−a−1)(B)=λn(B),λn(−B)=(λn∘S−1)(B)=λn(B).
This proves (i) and (ii).
Step 4: functions. The functions x↦f(x+a) and x↦f(−x) are f∘Ta and f∘S. For f∈M+(Rn,B(Rn)), Image Measures and Measures with a Density: Measures, Integrals and Change of Variables (ii) shows that both lie in M+(Rn,B(Rn)), and together with (∗) it gives
∫Rnf∘Tadλn=∫Rnfd(λn∘Ta−1)=∫Rnfdλn,
and likewise with S in place of Ta; this proves (iii). For measurable f:Rn→R, Image Measures and Measures with a Density: Measures, Integrals and Change of Variables (iii) and (∗) show that f∘Ta is measurable and that f∘Ta∈L1(λn) if and only if f∈L1(λn∘Ta−1)=L1(λn), with
∫Rnf∘Tadλn=∫Rnfdλn
in that case, and likewise with S. This proves (iv).
