TheoremBase

The members clause is read off the class abstraction; the image is the image of the set D under the function of pairs (u, t), hence a set; and equating z with it is expressed by saying that the elements of z are exactly the values of t.

Proof

Each result cited is universally quantified over the data in its own statement.

Preliminaries. The formulas below quantify over set variables only, so they are predicative (Predicativity of Expressions with Abbreviations, and Symbol-Free Forms of the Basic Defined Set Symbols §closure); they are read as in Formulas of the Language of Class Theory, Free Variables, Predicative Formulas and Abbreviations §reading. A set variable other than x1,…,xkx_{1},\dots,x_{k} that occurs in none of finitely many given formulas, terms and variables, that is, is none of the given variables and occurs in none of the given formulas and terms, is called fresh for them; as many distinct fresh set variables as needed exist, since the set variables form an infinite list (Formulas of the Language of Class Theory, Free Variables, Predicative Formulas and Abbreviations §symbols) while x1,…,xkx_{1},\dots,x_{k} and the given formulas, terms and variables contain only finitely many variables.

Fixing variables at sets. Let φ\varphi be a predicative formula, and let some of x1,…,xkx_{1},\dots,x_{k}, the xix_{i} for ii in a list II of indices, be fixed at sets cic_{i}. Choose distinct set variables yiy_{i}, i∈Ii\in I, fresh for φ\varphi, with values cic_{i}, and let φ[y/x]\varphi[y/x] be φ\varphi with each free occurrence of xix_{i} replaced by yiy_{i}; as no yiy_{i} occurs in φ\varphi, no bound variable is renamed. Then φ[y/x]\varphi[y/x] is predicative, and under every assignment to its other free variables it holds if and only if φ\varphi holds with cic_{i} assigned to xix_{i} for i∈Ii\in I (Predicativity under Renaming of Set Variables by Variables, of Formulas with Ordered Pairs, and of Formulas for Relations, Functions, Maps, Injectivity, Surjectivity and Bijectivity §renaming, with the xix_{i} and yiy_{i}, i∈Ii\in I, for its v1,…,vkv_{1},\dots,v_{k} and y1,…,yky_{1},\dots,y_{k}). So φ\varphi with these xix_{i} fixed at sets is the predicative formula φ[y/x]\varphi[y/x], whose parameters are those of φ\varphi and the yiy_{i}; this is how a formula below is read when sets are fixed for some of x1,…,xkx_{1},\dots,x_{k}.

The guard. The formula (γ∧u∈D)(\gamma\wedge u\in D) is predicative, since γ\gamma is and u∈Du\in D is atomic, and its free variables are among x1,…,xkx_{1},\dots,x_{k}, uu and the parameters; so it is a guard for the variables x1,…,xk,ux_{1},\dots,x_{k},u (Conditions Expressed by a Predicative Formula, and Guards §guard).

By Conditions Expressed by a Predicative Formula, and Guards §expressed, the free variables of ψ\psi are among x1,…,xkx_{1},\dots,x_{k}, uu, ss and the parameters of γ\gamma, of DD and of tt, and, under every assignment of sets to x1,…,xkx_{1},\dots,x_{k}, uu and ss, ψ\psi holds if and only if γ\gamma holds, the set assigned to uu lies in DD, and the set assigned to ss is the value of tt. In particular ∃u ψ\exists u\,\psi is predicative, and its free variables other than ss are among x1,…,xkx_{1},\dots,x_{k} and the parameters, so the class abstraction {s:∃u ψ}\{s:\exists u\,\psi\} of Class Abstraction: the Class of All Sets Satisfying a Predicative Formula §abstraction is formed with x1,…,xkx_{1},\dots,x_{k} and the parameters as its parameters.

Fix an assignment of sets to x1,…,xkx_{1},\dots,x_{k} satisfying γ\gamma until the clause typed. For a∈Da\in D, the assignment of aa to uu with the same sets for x1,…,xkx_{1},\dots,x_{k} satisfies γ∧u∈D\gamma\wedge u\in D, since uu is not free in γ\gamma; so t(a)t(a) is a set lying in BB by Terms and Typed Terms under a Guard §type-defined.

Clause members. With x1,…,xkx_{1},\dots,x_{k} fixed at the assigned sets, {s:∃u ψ}\{s:\exists u\,\psi\} is the abstraction of the predicative formula (∃u ψ)[y/x](\exists u\,\psi)[y/x], by the fixing of variables in the preliminaries. Let bb be a set. By Class Abstraction: the Class of All Sets Satisfying a Predicative Formula §abstraction and that fixing, b∈{s:∃u ψ}b\in\{s:\exists u\,\psi\} if and only if ∃u ψ\exists u\,\psi holds with bb assigned to ss and the assigned sets to x1,…,xkx_{1},\dots,x_{k}, that is, by the reading of ∃u\exists u, if and only if there is a set aa such that ψ\psi holds with aa assigned to uu and bb to ss. By the property of ψ\psi, and since γ\gamma holds, this is the case if and only if there is a set aa with a∈Da\in D and b=t(a)b=t(a). If s′s' and ψ′\psi' are another such choice, the class {s′:∃u ψ′}\{s':\exists u\,\psi'\} has by the same argument the same elements, so the two classes are equal by Axiom of Extensionality for Classes.

Clause set. Choose a fresh set variable pp for γ\gamma, tt, ψ\psi, uu, ss and DD, and let p=(u,s)p=(u,s) be the formula of Predicativity under Renaming of Set Variables by Variables, of Formulas with Ordered Pairs, and of Formulas for Relations, Functions, Maps, Injectivity, Surjectivity and Bijectivity §pair-equality, with pp, uu and ss for its ss, t1t_{1} and t2t_{2}; it is predicative, its free variables are among pp, uu and ss, and when sets are assigned to pp, uu and ss it holds if and only if pp is the ordered pair of the sets assigned to uu and ss. Let φ\varphi be the formula ∃u ∃s (p=(u,s)∧ψ)\exists u\,\exists s\,(p=(u,s)\wedge\psi); by the preliminaries it is predicative, with free variables among pp, x1,…,xkx_{1},\dots,x_{k} and the parameters. Let F={p:φ}F=\{p:\varphi\} be the class of Class Abstraction: the Class of All Sets Satisfying a Predicative Formula §abstraction, formed, as in the clause members, from the predicative formula φ[y/x]\varphi[y/x] with x1,…,xkx_{1},\dots,x_{k} fixed at the assigned sets, by the fixing of variables in the preliminaries. By that definition, that fixing, the reading, and the property of ψ\psi, for every set cc: c∈Fc\in F if and only if there are sets aa and bb with c=(a,b)c=(a,b), a∈Da\in D and b=t(a)b=t(a). By The Characteristic Property of Ordered Pairs and Nested Tuples of Sets §characteristic, for all sets aa and bb it follows that (a,b)∈F(a,b)\in F if and only if a∈Da\in D and b=t(a)b=t(a).

So every element of FF is an ordered pair, and FF is a relation by Relations, Domain, Range, Inverse and Composition §relation. If (a,b)∈F(a,b)\in F and (a,b′)∈F(a,b')\in F, then b=t(a)=b′b=t(a)=b'; so FF is a function by Functions, Values of a Function, and Functions from One Class to Another §function. As DD is a set, the image F[D]F[D] is a set by Images of Sets under Functions Are Sets, and a Function with a Set Domain Is a Set §image-set. By The Image and the Preimage of a Class under a Class §image and Class Abstraction: the Class of All Sets Satisfying a Predicative Formula §abstraction, a set bb lies in F[D]F[D] if and only if there is a set aa with a∈Da\in D and (a,b)∈F(a,b)\in F, that is, if and only if b=t(a)b=t(a) for some a∈Da\in D. By the clause members, F[D]F[D] and {t:u∈D}\{t:u\in D\} have the same elements, so they are equal by Axiom of Extensionality for Classes, and {t:u∈D}\{t:u\in D\} is a set. Each of its elements is t(a)t(a) for some a∈Da\in D, which lies in BB as shown before the clause members; so {t:u∈D}\{t:u\in D\} is a subclass of BB by Subclasses and Subsets §subclass, and, being a set, a subset of BB.

Clause finite. Let DD be finite, and let FF be the function of pairs (a,t(a))(a,t(a)) of the clause set, so that F[D]={t:u∈D}F[D]=\{t:u\in D\}, a set TT. For every a∈Da\in D, (a,t(a))∈F(a,t(a))\in F; and if (a,b)∈F(a,b)\in F, then a∈Da\in D and b=t(a)∈Tb=t(a)\in T by the clause members. So dom⁡F=D\operatorname{dom}F=D and ran⁡F⊆T\operatorname{ran}F\subseteq T, and F:D→TF:D\to T is a map by Functions, Values of a Function, and Functions from One Class to Another §map, whose image F(D)=F[D]F(D)=F[D] is TT. Hence TT is finite (Finite Sets: the Pigeonhole Principle, Uniqueness of the Length, Subsets, Unions, Products, Images, Bounded Sets of Natural Numbers, Extreme Elements, Sets of Maps, Finite Unions and Finite Choice §image, with DD and TT for its AA and BB).

Clause typed. Term. Under each assignment satisfying γ\gamma, {t:u∈D}\{t:u\in D\} is a class, and by the clause members its elements, hence by Axiom of Extensionality for Classes the class itself, are determined by the values t(a)t(a) for a∈Da\in D, which are determined by the sets assigned to x1,…,xkx_{1},\dots,x_{k}, the set aa and the values of the parameters, by Terms and Typed Terms under a Guard §term for tt. The expression {t:u∈D}\{t:u\in D\} is written with x1,…,xkx_{1},\dots,x_{k} and parameters, uu being bound in it. So it is a term under γ\gamma by Terms and Typed Terms under a Guard §term.

Type defined. Under each assignment satisfying γ\gamma, {t:u∈D}\{t:u\in D\} is a set and a subset of BB by the clause set, hence an element of CC by the hypothesis on CC. This is Terms and Typed Terms under a Guard §type-defined.

Type expressed. Let zz be a set variable that is none of x1,…,xkx_{1},\dots,x_{k}, is not free in γ\gamma and does not occur in {t:u∈D}\{t:u\in D\}; bound occurrences counting, zz is neither uu nor DD and does not occur in tt. Choose a fresh set variable ww for γ\gamma, tt, uu, DD and zz. Then ww is none of x1,…,xkx_{1},\dots,x_{k}, uu and DD, is not free in γ\gamma and does not occur in tt, so, by Terms and Typed Terms under a Guard §type-expressed for tt, there is a predicative formula ψw\psi_{w} expressing γ∧u∈D∧w=t\gamma\wedge u\in D\wedge w=t on x1,…,xk,ux_{1},\dots,x_{k},u and ww; its free variables are among x1,…,xkx_{1},\dots,x_{k}, uu, ww and the parameters of γ\gamma, DD and tt, so zz is not free in it. The pair ww, ψw\psi_{w} is a choice of ss, ψ\psi as in the statement. Let χ\chi be the formula

(γ∧∀w (w∈z⇔∃u ψw)).\bigl(\gamma\wedge\forall w\,(w\in z\Leftrightarrow\exists u\,\psi_{w})\bigr).

By the preliminaries, χ\chi is predicative, and its free variables are among x1,…,xkx_{1},\dots,x_{k}, zz and the parameters of γ\gamma and of {t:u∈D}\{t:u\in D\}. Consider an assignment of sets to x1,…,xkx_{1},\dots,x_{k} and zz. If γ\gamma fails, χ\chi fails. If γ\gamma holds, then, by the reading and Class Abstraction: the Class of All Sets Satisfying a Predicative Formula §abstraction with ww and ψw\psi_{w} for ss and ψ\psi, χ\chi holds if and only if every set bb satisfies b∈zb\in z exactly when b∈{t:u∈D}b\in\{t:u\in D\}, that is, by Axiom of Extensionality for Classes, if and only if z={t:u∈D}z=\{t:u\in D\}. So χ\chi expresses the condition γ∧z={t:u∈D}\gamma\wedge z=\{t:u\in D\}, which is Terms and Typed Terms under a Guard §type-expressed. Hence {t:u∈D}\{t:u\in D\} is a term of type CC under γ\gamma by Terms and Typed Terms under a Guard §typed-term.

Clause symbol. Let CC, zz and θ\theta be as in the clause symbol; such a θ\theta exists by Terms and Typed Terms under a Guard §type-expressed, {t:u∈D}\{t:u\in D\} being a term of type CC under γ\gamma by the clause typed. Under an assignment satisfying γ\gamma, the value of {t:u∈D}\{t:u\in D\} is a set by the clause set, and θ\theta holds exactly when the set assigned to zz is that set; so exactly one set zz satisfies θ\theta. By Formulas of the Language of Class Theory, Free Variables, Predicative Formulas and Abbreviations §defined-set-symbols, {t:u∈D}\{t:u\in D\} is then a defined set symbol with arguments x1,…,xkx_{1},\dots,x_{k} given by θ\theta, used properly wherever γ\gamma holds.

Now let xjx_{j} be taken as the uu of Maps and Relations Given by Formulas §map or of Predicative Formulas for Suprema and Infima, and Maps Defined by Suprema and Infima §maps, and let the xix_{i}, i≠ji\neq j, be fixed at sets cic_{i} such that γ\gamma holds whenever an element of the set aa there is put for xjx_{j}. By the fixing of variables in the preliminaries, θ\theta with these xix_{i} fixed is the predicative formula θ[y/x]\theta[y/x], whose free variables are among xjx_{j}, zz and the parameters, and which, under every assignment of sets to xjx_{j} and zz, holds if and only if θ\theta holds with cic_{i} assigned to each xix_{i}, i≠ji\neq j. So, for each element of aa put for xjx_{j}, γ\gamma holds and exactly one set zz satisfies θ[y/x]\theta[y/x], namely the value of {t:u∈D}\{t:u\in D\}; that is, {t:u∈D}\{t:u\in D\} is a defined set symbol with argument xjx_{j} given by θ[y/x]\theta[y/x] and used properly at every element of aa, as those clauses require. The first of them also requires the values to lie in a set bb. When C=P(B)C=\mathcal{P}(B) with BB a set, each value is an element of CC by the clause typed, and P(B)\mathcal{P}(B) is a set (The Union Set and the Power Set of a Set §power); so b=P(B)b=\mathcal{P}(B) serves.
