The distance between two reals is the absolute value of their difference, and that absolute value is symmetric, so the definition of relative continuity for the real line reads exactly as the stated condition.

Proof

Distances. The distance dRd_{\mathbb{R}} is the map R×R→R\mathbb{R}\times\mathbb{R}\to\mathbb{R} with values ∣s−t∣|s-t|, which exists and is unique by The Distance on the Real Numbers Is a Map with Values the Absolute Differences (i); so for s,t∈Rs,t\in\mathbb{R}, dR(s,t)=∣s−t∣d_{\mathbb{R}}(s,t)=|s-t| by The Distance on the Real Numbers (i), and ∣s−t∣=∣−(t−s)∣=∣t−s∣|s-t|=|-(t-s)|=|t-s|, as s−t=−(t−s)s-t=-(t-s) (Difference and Quotient Identities in ℝ (i)) and ∣−w∣=∣w∣|-w|=|w| for w∈Rw\in\mathbb{R} (Rules of Arithmetic and Order in an Ordered Field (x)). Let x′∈Ex'\in E and y∈Ey\in E. As E⊆RE\subseteq\mathbb{R}, x′,y∈Rx',y\in\mathbb{R}, and f(y),f(x′)∈Rf(y),f(x')\in\mathbb{R} (Values, Restriction and Equality of a Map, and the Map u↦t(u)u\mapsto t(u) as a Defined Set Symbol (ii)). Hence

dR(x′,y)=∣y−x′∣anddR(f(y),f(x′))=∣f(y)−f(x′)∣.d_{\mathbb{R}}(x',y)=|y-x'|\qquad\text{and}\qquad d_{\mathbb{R}}(f(y),f(x'))=|f(y)-f(x')| .

Proof of (i). By Continuous Map Between Metric Spaces (i), with (X,dX)=(Y,dY)=(R,dR)(X,d_{X})=(Y,d_{Y})=(\mathbb{R},d_{\mathbb{R}}) and A=EA=E (a set, as a subclass of the set R\mathbb{R}, by Subclasses of Sets Are Sets, the Union and Power Set of a Set Exist Uniquely, Binary Unions of Sets Are Sets, and the Universal Class Is Proper (i)), ff is continuous at xx relative to EE if and only if for every real ε>0\varepsilon>0 there is a real δ>0\delta>0 such that every y∈Ey\in E with dR(x,y)<δd_{\mathbb{R}}(x,y)<\delta satisfies dR(f(y),f(x))<εd_{\mathbb{R}}(f(y),f(x))<\varepsilon. By the two equalities above, with x′=xx'=x, this condition is the one stated.

Proof of (ii). By Continuous Map Between Metric Spaces (ii), ff is continuous on EE if and only if it is continuous at x′x' relative to EE for every x′∈Ex'\in E. By (i), applied at each x′∈Ex'\in E in place of xx, this is the stated condition.
