The formula "for all u, u = u" expresses the true condition; the formula "there is v with (x, v) in S and (x, v) in M" is predicative by the predicativity of pair memberships and expresses the agreement condition.
Throughout, formulas written with the abbreviation stand for the formulas it abbreviates in Formulas of the Language of Class Theory, Free Variables, Predicative Formulas and Abbreviations (ii), and are read as in Formulas of the Language of Class Theory, Free Variables, Predicative Formulas and Abbreviations (iv). By Formulas of the Language of Class Theory, Free Variables, Predicative Formulas and Abbreviations (v), a formula is predicative exactly when none of its quantifiers is applied to a class variable; hence a formula built from predicative formulas by , and quantifiers over set variables is again predicative.
The true condition. We prove (i). Let , let be a set variable, and let be the formula
that is, . It is built from the atomic formula by negations and a quantifier over the set variable , so it is predicative. Its only variable is bound, so by Formulas of the Language of Class Theory, Free Variables, Predicative Formulas and Abbreviations (iii) it has no free variables; in particular its free variables are among , and has no parameters. Read as in Formulas of the Language of Class Theory, Free Variables, Predicative Formulas and Abbreviations (iv), says that every set satisfies , which is true. So under every assignment of sets to (for , the empty assignment) both and the condition hold, and holds if and only if the condition does. By Conditions Expressed by a Predicative Formula, and Guards (ii), is a predicative formula in expressing the condition that holds under every assignment.
Agreement at a pair. We prove (ii). Let be a set variable other than ; it differs from the class variables and , the two lists of variables being disjoint by Formulas of the Language of Class Theory, Free Variables, Predicative Formulas and Abbreviations (i). By Predicativity under Renaming of Set Variables by Variables, of Formulas with Ordered Pairs, and of Formulas for Relations, Functions, Maps, Injectivity, Surjectivity and Bijectivity (iii), applied with and with for , for and for , the formulas and are predicative, and when sets and are assigned to and , they hold if and only if and respectively. Their free variables are among , and , respectively . Indeed, in Predicativity under Renaming of Set Variables by Variables, of Formulas with Ordered Pairs, and of Formulas for Relations, Functions, Maps, Injectivity, Surjectivity and Bijectivity the formula is , the renaming of the formula obtained by eliminating the ordered pair from , where and are distinct set variables other than . Each formula inserted by Formulas of the Language of Class Theory, Free Variables, Predicative Formulas and Abbreviations (viii) has its free variables among and the arguments of the symbol, and is bound in the inserted part ; so the free variables of are among , and . The renaming of Predicativity under Renaming of Set Variables by Variables, of Formulas with Ordered Pairs, and of Formulas for Relations, Functions, Maps, Injectivity, Surjectivity and Bijectivity (i) changes bound variables only and replaces the free occurrences of and by and , here and . Hence the free variables of are among , and , and likewise those of are among , and . Let be the formula
It is built from these two predicative formulas by and a quantifier over the set variable , so it is predicative, and since is bound in it, its free variables are among and the parameters and of the condition.
Let a set be assigned to , the parameters and having their values. Read as in Formulas of the Language of Class Theory, Free Variables, Predicative Formulas and Abbreviations (iv), the quantifier over the set variable ranges over sets, so holds if and only if there is a set such that both conjuncts hold with assigned to and to ; by what was said above, this is the case if and only if there is a set with and , that is, if and only if the condition holds at . By Conditions Expressed by a Predicative Formula, and Guards (ii), is a predicative formula in expressing the condition.
