Checks the subgroup conditions directly from the criterion, builds the group structure on a subgroup from the restricted operation, and derives the intersection and trivial cases from the criterion.

Proof

Throughout, β‹…\cdot is associative with neutral element ee (Groups and Abelian Groups (i), Monoids (i)), and routine facts about nonempty classes and restrictions of binary operations are used without comment (Toolkit for AL1).

We begin with the "only if" part of (i). If H≀GH\le G, then e∈He\in H, so Hβ‰ βˆ…H\neq\emptyset; and for g,h∈Hg,h\in H also hβˆ’1∈Hh^{-1}\in H, hence ghβˆ’1∈Hgh^{-1}\in H (Subgroups (i)).

For the "if" part, suppose that Hβ‰ βˆ…H\neq\emptyset and that ghβˆ’1∈Hgh^{-1}\in H for all g,h∈Hg,h\in H. Choose g∈Hg\in H; the hypothesis for the pair g,gg,g gives e=ggβˆ’1∈He=gg^{-1}\in H (Uniqueness of the Identity Element and of Inverses in a Group (ii)). Next, for h∈Hh\in H, the hypothesis for the pair e,he,h gives hβˆ’1=ehβˆ’1∈Hh^{-1}=eh^{-1}\in H. Finally, for g,h∈Hg,h\in H we now know that hβˆ’1∈Hh^{-1}\in H, and the hypothesis for the pair g,hβˆ’1g,h^{-1} gives

gh=g(hβˆ’1)βˆ’1∈H,gh=g(h^{-1})^{-1}\in H,

since (hβˆ’1)βˆ’1=h(h^{-1})^{-1}=h by Cancellation Laws and Basic Inverse Identities in a Group (iii). So H≀GH\le G by Subgroups (i).

For (ii), let H≀GH\le G and let β‹…β€²\cdot' be the restriction of β‹…\cdot to HΓ—HH\times H. It is a function on HΓ—HH\times H with the same values as β‹…\cdot (Basic Properties of Functions: Equality, Composition, Identity, Inverse and Restriction (ix)), and these values lie in HH because HH is closed under products (Subgroups (i)); so β‹…β€²\cdot' is a binary operation on HH (Binary Operations on a Set (i)), associative because β‹…\cdot is (Semigroups (i)). Since e∈He\in H is neutral for β‹…\cdot, it is neutral for β‹…β€²\cdot', and (H,β‹…β€²)(H,\cdot') is a monoid with identity ee (Monoids (i)). Each h∈Hh\in H has hβˆ’1∈Hh^{-1}\in H, and

hβ‹…β€²hβˆ’1=hβˆ’1β‹…β€²h=eh\cdot'h^{-1}=h^{-1}\cdot'h=e

(Uniqueness of the Identity Element and of Inverses in a Group (ii)), so hh is a unit of (H,β‹…β€²)(H,\cdot') (Units of a Monoid (i)). Hence (H,β‹…β€²)(H,\cdot') is a group (Groups and Abelian Groups (i)), and by Uniqueness of the Identity Element and of Inverses in a Group (ii), applied to this group, the inverse of hh in it is hβˆ’1h^{-1}.

For (iii), the set β‹‚S\bigcap\mathcal{S} is a subset of GG, and it contains ee, which lies in every subgroup K∈SK\in\mathcal{S}; so it is nonempty. If g,hβˆˆβ‹‚Sg,h\in\bigcap\mathcal{S}, then ghβˆ’1∈Kgh^{-1}\in K for every K∈SK\in\mathcal{S} by the "only if" part of (i), so ghβˆ’1βˆˆβ‹‚Sgh^{-1}\in\bigcap\mathcal{S}. The "if" part of (i) now shows that β‹‚S\bigcap\mathcal{S} is a subgroup of GG.

For (iv), the subset {e}\{e\} contains ee, is closed under products since ee=eee=e, and is closed under inverses since eβˆ’1=ee^{-1}=e (Cancellation Laws and Basic Inverse Identities in a Group (ii)); so it is a subgroup by Subgroups (i). The whole group GG satisfies the three conditions of Subgroups (i) trivially.
