TheoremBase

The predicative expressibility of z = U is taken from the union or intersection term of the typed-terms helper, t being also of type P(X); the value lies in the σ-algebra because, under each assignment, t gives a map from the countable index set into 𝓕, obtained from a map on Z by restriction, and countable unions and intersections stay in 𝓕.

Proof

We prove (i) and (ii) together; let WW be UU, respectively VV, and let ⨀\bigodot stand for ⋃\bigcup, respectively ⋂\bigcap. In the case of (ii) the value of II is nonempty under every assignment satisfying γ\gamma, as supposed there. By Terms and Typed Terms under a Guard (ii), we must show Terms and Typed Terms under a Guard (iii) and Terms and Typed Terms under a Guard (iv) for WW and the class F\mathcal{F}.

The term tt has type P(X)\mathcal{P}(X). By σ-Algebra and Measurable Space (i), F⊆P(X)\mathcal{F}\subseteq\mathcal{P}(X). So the value of tt under every assignment satisfying γ′\gamma', a set lying in F\mathcal{F}, lies in P(X)\mathcal{P}(X); and Terms and Typed Terms under a Guard (iv) for tt does not involve the class. Hence tt is a term of type P(X)\mathcal{P}(X) under γ′\gamma', and Preimages, Unions and Intersections over an Index Set, Suprema and Infima, and Superlevel Sets as Typed Terms (ii) applies to XX, ZZ, II, ii, γ′\gamma' and tt: the term ⨀i∈It\bigodot_{i\in I}t under γ\gamma, written with II, ii and tt, ii bound in it, is a term of type P(X)\mathcal{P}(X) under γ\gamma, and under each assignment satisfying γ\gamma its value is the class described in (i), respectively (ii), that is, the value of WW.

The defining condition is predicative. Let zz be a set variable that is none of x1,…,xkx_{1},\dots,x_{k}, is not free in γ\gamma and does not occur in WW. Let z′z' be a set variable distinct from zz, ii, x1,…,xkx_{1},\dots,x_{k} and occurring in none of γ\gamma, II, tt, WW. By the preceding paragraph and Terms and Typed Terms under a Guard (iv) for ⨀i∈It\bigodot_{i\in I}t, there is a predicative formula ψ′\psi' expressing the condition γ∧z′=⨀i∈It\gamma\wedge z'=\bigodot_{i\in I}t; its free variables are among x1,…,xkx_{1},\dots,x_{k}, z′z' and the parameters of γ\gamma, II and tt. The variable zz is not free in ψ′\psi': it is none of x1,…,xkx_{1},\dots,x_{k} and not z′z', it is not free in γ\gamma, and it is no parameter of II or of tt, since every such parameter is a parameter of WW and zz does not occur in WW. Let ψ\psi be the formula ∃z′ (z′=z∧ψ′)\exists z'\,(z'=z\wedge\psi'). It is predicative, its quantifier binding a set variable (Formulas of the Language of Class Theory, Free Variables, Predicative Formulas and Abbreviations (v)), its free variables are among x1,…,xkx_{1},\dots,x_{k}, zz and the parameters of γ\gamma and WW, and under every assignment it holds if and only if γ\gamma holds and zz is the value of ⨀i∈It\bigodot_{i\in I}t, that is, the value of WW. So ψ\psi expresses the condition γ∧z=W\gamma\wedge z=W, which is Terms and Typed Terms under a Guard (iv) for WW.

A map from ZZ to F\mathcal{F}. Let γ′′\gamma'' be the formula γ∧i∈Z\gamma\wedge i\in Z, with ZZ a parameter; it is a guard for x1,…,xk,ix_{1},\dots,x_{k},i. Let t∗t^{*} be the term under γ′′\gamma'', written with γ′\gamma', tt and ZZ, whose value under an assignment satisfying γ′′\gamma'' is the value of tt if the assignment satisfies γ′\gamma', and ∅\emptyset otherwise. Under every assignment satisfying γ′′\gamma'' this value lies in F\mathcal{F}, by Terms and Typed Terms under a Guard (iii) for tt and since ∅∈F\emptyset\in\mathcal{F} by Closure Properties of σ-Algebras, Intersections and Traces of σ-Algebras, and the Generated σ-Algebra (vi). Let yy be a set variable that is none of x1,…,xk,ix_{1},\dots,x_{k},i, is not free in γ′′\gamma'' and does not occur in t∗t^{*}, and let ψt\psi_{t} be a predicative formula expressing γ′∧y=t\gamma'\wedge y=t, by Terms and Typed Terms under a Guard (iv) for tt. Under an assignment satisfying γ′\gamma', the value of II is a subset of ZZ, so the assignment satisfies γ′′\gamma''. Hence the predicative formula

(γ′′∧ψt)∨(γ′′∧¬γ′∧∀s ¬(s∈y)),(\gamma''\wedge\psi_{t})\vee(\gamma''\wedge\neg\gamma'\wedge\forall s\,\neg(s\in y)),

with ss a set variable distinct from the others, holds exactly when γ′′\gamma'' holds and yy is the value of t∗t^{*}; so t∗t^{*} is a term of type F\mathcal{F} under γ′′\gamma''. By Preimages, Unions and Intersections over an Index Set, Suprema and Infima, and Superlevel Sets as Typed Terms (vi), with class variables DD and CC whose values are ZZ and F\mathcal{F}, under each assignment of sets to x1,…,xkx_{1},\dots,x_{k} satisfying γ\gamma there is exactly one map h∗:Z→Fh^{*}:Z\to\mathcal{F} whose value at each a∈Za\in Z is the value of t∗t^{*} when aa is assigned to ii.

The value lies in F\mathcal{F}. Fix an assignment of sets to x1,…,xkx_{1},\dots,x_{k} satisfying γ\gamma, and let I0I_{0} be the value of II, a set with I0⊆ZI_{0}\subseteq Z. As ZZ is countable, I0I_{0} is countable by Countable Sets: a Bijection from ℕ onto ℕ×ℕ, Finite Sets, Subsets, Surjective Images, Images, Products, and the Integers and Rationals (iv). Let a∈I0a\in I_{0}. Assigning aa to ii changes neither the truth of γ\gamma, by Locality of Predicative Formulas: Truth Depends Only on the Values of the Free Variables (i), γ\gamma being predicative and ii not free in it, nor the value of II, since ii does not occur in II; so the extended assignment satisfies γ′\gamma', and h∗(a)=t(a)∈Fh^{*}(a)=t(a)\in\mathcal{F}. Hence the restriction h=h∗∣I0h=h^{*}|_{I_{0}} is a map h:I0→Fh:I_{0}\to\mathcal{F} with h(a)=t(a)h(a)=t(a) for every a∈I0a\in I_{0}, a family (t(a))a∈I0(t(a))_{a\in I_{0}}. By Unions and Intersections over a Countable Index Set in a σ-Algebra (i), ⋃a∈I0h(a)∈F\bigcup_{a\in I_{0}}h(a)\in\mathcal{F}, and in the case of (ii), I0I_{0} being nonempty, ⋂a∈I0h(a)∈F\bigcap_{a\in I_{0}}h(a)\in\mathcal{F} by Unions and Intersections over a Countable Index Set in a σ-Algebra (ii). By Indexed Families of Sets and Their Union, Intersection and Product (ii) and Indexed Families of Sets and Their Union, Intersection and Product (iii), this union is the class of the sets lying in t(a)t(a) for some a∈I0a\in I_{0} and this intersection the class of the sets lying in t(a)t(a) for every a∈I0a\in I_{0}; so the value of WW is a set lying in F\mathcal{F}. This is Terms and Typed Terms under a Guard (iii) for WW, and WW is a term of type F\mathcal{F} under γ\gamma.
