The countability formula is checked against the definition through the formulas for maps and surjectivity, and composed with a typed term by an existential quantifier; the term S^[n] is handled by the predicative formula for the segment [n] and the map formula, with the domain bound by an existential quantifier.

Proof

Throughout, the parameters have their fixed values, as in Conditions Expressed by a Predicative Formula, and Guards (i). The set variables form an infinite list (Formulas of the Language of Class Theory, Free Variables, Predicative Formulas and Abbreviations (i)), so as many distinct set variables as needed can be chosen outside any finitely many given formulas, terms and variables. Every formula formed below applies no quantifier to a class variable, ordered pairs in it being as in Predicativity under Renaming of Set Variables by Variables, of Formulas with Ordered Pairs, and of Formulas for Relations, Functions, Maps, Injectivity, Surjectivity and Bijectivity (iii), so it is predicative by Predicativity of Expressions with Abbreviations, and Symbol-Free Forms of the Basic Defined Set Symbols (i).

Proof of (i). The formulas μ(f,N,x)\mu(f,N,x) and σ(f,x)\sigma(f,x) are predicative by Predicativity under Renaming of Set Variables by Variables, of Formulas with Ordered Pairs, and of Formulas for Relations, Functions, Maps, Injectivity, Surjectivity and Bijectivity (vii) and Predicativity under Renaming of Set Variables by Variables, of Formulas with Ordered Pairs, and of Formulas for Relations, Functions, Maps, Injectivity, Surjectivity and Bijectivity (ix), with free variables ff, NN, xx and ff, xx; so cnt(x)\mathrm{cnt}(x) is predicative, and as aa and ff are bound in it, its free variables are xx and NN. Let cc be a set assigned to xx. By Predicativity of Expressions with Abbreviations, and Symbol-Free Forms of the Basic Defined Set Symbols (iii), ∀a (a∉c)\forall a\,(a\notin c) holds if and only if c=∅c=\emptyset. By Predicativity under Renaming of Set Variables by Variables, of Formulas with Ordered Pairs, and of Formulas for Relations, Functions, Maps, Injectivity, Surjectivity and Bijectivity (vii) and Predicativity under Renaming of Set Variables by Variables, of Formulas with Ordered Pairs, and of Formulas for Relations, Functions, Maps, Injectivity, Surjectivity and Bijectivity (ix), ∃f (μ(f,N,c)∧σ(f,c))\exists f\,(\mu(f,N,c)\wedge\sigma(f,c)) holds if and only if some set ff is a surjective map f:N→cf:\mathbb{N}\to c; and every map N→c\mathbb{N}\to c is a set, by Sets and Maps: Ordinary Notation (v). So cnt(x)\mathrm{cnt}(x) holds if and only if c=∅c=\emptyset or there is a surjective map N→c\mathbb{N}\to c, that is, by Countable Set (i), if and only if cc is countable.

Now let tt be a term of type AA under γ\gamma. Let zz be a set variable that is none of x1,…,xkx_{1},\dots,x_{k}, is not free in γ\gamma and does not occur in tt. By Terms and Typed Terms under a Guard (iv) a predicative formula ψ\psi expresses γ∧z=t\gamma\wedge z=t; its free variables are among x1,…,xkx_{1},\dots,x_{k}, zz and the parameters of γ\gamma and tt, by Conditions Expressed by a Predicative Formula, and Guards (ii). Let cnt(z)\mathrm{cnt}(z) be formed as above with zz for xx, its bound variables chosen other than zz. The formula ∃z (ψ∧cnt(z))\exists z\,(\psi\wedge\mathrm{cnt}(z)) is predicative, and its free variables are among x1,…,xkx_{1},\dots,x_{k}, NN and the parameters of γ\gamma and tt. Under an assignment of sets to x1,…,xkx_{1},\dots,x_{k}, by Locality of Predicative Formulas: Truth Depends Only on the Values of the Free Variables (i), ψ\psi holds for a set assigned to zz if and only if γ\gamma holds and that set is the value of tt; so ∃z (ψ∧cnt(z))\exists z\,(\psi\wedge\mathrm{cnt}(z)) holds if and only if γ\gamma holds and the value of tt satisfies cnt\mathrm{cnt}, that is, is countable. So this formula expresses the condition, with the parameter NN.

Proof of (ii). Values. Under an assignment satisfying γ\gamma, the set nn lies in N0\mathbb{N}_{0}, and [n][n] is a set contained in N0\mathbb{N}_{0} by The Segments [n]: Each Is a Set, and 1 Lies in [n] for n ∈ ℕ (i). By Tuples in a Set: the Set of n-Tuples and Their Components (i) and Tuples in a Set: the Set of n-Tuples and Their Components (ii), S[n]S^{[n]} is a set whose elements are the maps w:[n]→Sw:[n]\to S. Let ww be such a map. Every element of ww is an ordered pair (b,s)(b,s) by Relations, Domain, Range, Inverse and Composition (i), with b∈dom⁡w=[n]b\in\operatorname{dom}w=[n] and s∈ran⁡w⊆Ss\in\operatorname{ran}w\subseteq S by Relations, Domain, Range, Inverse and Composition (ii), Relations, Domain, Range, Inverse and Composition (iii) and Functions, Values of a Function, and Functions from One Class to Another (iii); so it lies in the set N0×S\mathbb{N}_{0}\times S by Membership in a Cartesian Product, and the Cartesian Product of Two Sets Is a Set (i) and Membership in a Cartesian Product, and the Cartesian Product of Two Sets Is a Set (ii), and w∈P(N0×S)w\in\mathcal{P}(\mathbb{N}_{0}\times S) by The Union Set and the Power Set of a Set (ii). Hence S[n]⊆P(N0×S)S^{[n]}\subseteq\mathcal{P}(\mathbb{N}_{0}\times S), and S[n]∈P(P(N0×S))S^{[n]}\in\mathcal{P}(\mathcal{P}(\mathbb{N}_{0}\times S)) by The Union Set and the Power Set of a Set (ii). So Terms and Typed Terms under a Guard (iii) holds.

The formula. Let zz be a set variable that is none of x1,…,xkx_{1},\dots,x_{k}, is not free in γ\gamma and does not occur in S[n]S^{[n]}; so zz is neither nn nor SS. Let dd and ww be distinct set variables that are none of x1,…,xkx_{1},\dots,x_{k} and zz, do not occur in γ\gamma and are not SS. By Induction over Finite Sets, and Predicative Formulas for the Segments [n] and for Finiteness (i), with dd and nn for its zz and nn and NN and RR for its YY and RR, there is a predicative formula seg(d,n)\mathrm{seg}(d,n), with free variables among dd, nn, NN and RR, such that for every set dd and every n∈N0n\in\mathbb{N}_{0}, seg(d,n)\mathrm{seg}(d,n) holds if and only if d=[n]d=[n]. Let μ(w,d,S)\mu(w,d,S) be the formula of Predicativity under Renaming of Set Variables by Variables, of Formulas with Ordered Pairs, and of Formulas for Relations, Functions, Maps, Injectivity, Surjectivity and Bijectivity (vii) with ww, dd and SS for its FF, AA and BB, its bound variables chosen outside the variables above, and let ψ\psi be

γ∧∀w (w∈z⇔∃d (seg(d,n)∧μ(w,d,S))).\gamma\wedge\forall w\,\bigl(w\in z\Leftrightarrow\exists d\,(\mathrm{seg}(d,n)\wedge\mu(w,d,S))\bigr).

It is predicative, and its free variables are among x1,…,xkx_{1},\dots,x_{k}, zz and the parameters of γ\gamma and S[n]S^{[n]}. Under an assignment of sets to x1,…,xkx_{1},\dots,x_{k} and zz: if γ\gamma fails, ψ\psi fails. If γ\gamma holds, then n∈N0n\in\mathbb{N}_{0}, so for all sets ww and dd, seg(d,n)\mathrm{seg}(d,n) holds if and only if d=[n]d=[n], by Locality of Predicative Formulas: Truth Depends Only on the Values of the Free Variables (i) and the property of seg\mathrm{seg}; hence ∃d (seg(d,n)∧μ(w,d,S))\exists d\,(\mathrm{seg}(d,n)\wedge\mu(w,d,S)) holds if and only if μ(w,[n],S)\mu(w,[n],S), that is, by Predicativity under Renaming of Set Variables by Variables, of Formulas with Ordered Pairs, and of Formulas for Relations, Functions, Maps, Injectivity, Surjectivity and Bijectivity (vii), if and only if ww is a map [n]→S[n]\to S, that is, by Tuples in a Set: the Set of n-Tuples and Their Components (ii), if and only if w∈S[n]w\in S^{[n]}. So ψ\psi holds if and only if zz and S[n]S^{[n]} have the same elements, that is, by Axiom of Extensionality for Classes, if and only if z=S[n]z=S^{[n]}. So ψ\psi expresses γ∧z=S[n]\gamma\wedge z=S^{[n]}, Terms and Typed Terms under a Guard (iv) holds, and S[n]S^{[n]} is a term of type P(P(N0×S))\mathcal{P}(\mathcal{P}(\mathbb{N}_{0}\times S)) under γ\gamma by Terms and Typed Terms under a Guard (ii). For k=1k=1, n=x1n=x_{1} and γ\gamma the formula n∈Nn\in N, which is predicative with free variables nn and NN, every assignment satisfying γ\gamma gives n∈N⊆N0n\in\mathbb{N}\subseteq\mathbb{N}_{0}.
