TheoremBase

Each condition is written out, in four set variables, as a formula that quantifies over sets only, values of the operations and of the norm being named through their graphs; the formulas are then moved to the positions i, j, k, l by renaming.

Proof

Throughout, formulas are written with abbreviations and quantify over set variables only, so they are predicative. The parameters R\mathbb{R}, ++, β‹…\cdot, 00, 11 and ≀\le are variables other than x0,x1,…x_{0},x_{1},\dots and other than the bound variables below; 00 and 11 are sets, being elements of R\mathbb{R}, and ++, β‹…\cdot and ≀\le are sets, as maps from RΓ—R\mathbb{R}\times\mathbb{R} to R\mathbb{R} and a subclass of RΓ—R\mathbb{R}\times\mathbb{R} (The Elements of the Class of Functions from a Set to a Set, and This Class Is a Set (i), Subclasses of Sets Are Sets, the Union and Power Set of a Set Exist Uniquely, Binary Unions of Sets Are Sets, and the Universal Class Is Proper (i)). We first build formulas in the four set variables x0,x1,x2,x3x_{0},x_{1},x_{2},x_{3}, written VV, aa, ss and Ξ½\nu, and move them to the positions i,j,k,li,j,k,l at the end. The letters u,v,w,y,z,b,d,e,f,p,c,q,r,t,Ξ»,ΞΊu,v,w,y,z,b,d,e,f,p,c,q,r,t,\lambda,\kappa denote further set variables.

The standing hypothesis. For variables AA and BB let Ο€(c,A,B)\pi(c,A,B) be the formula βˆ€p (p∈cβ‡”βˆƒuβ€‰βˆƒv (u∈A∧v∈B∧p=(u,v)))\forall p\,\bigl(p\in c\Leftrightarrow\exists u\,\exists v\,(u\in A\wedge v\in B\wedge p=(u,v))\bigr). For sets AA and BB, the only set cc with Ο€(c,A,B)\pi(c,A,B) is the Cartesian product AΓ—BA\times B, which is a set by Membership in a Cartesian Product, and the Cartesian Product of Two Sets Is a Set (ii). Let ΞΌ(F,A,B)\mu(F,A,B) be the formula of Predicativity under Renaming of Set Variables by Variables, of Formulas with Ordered Pairs, and of Formulas for Relations, Functions, Maps, Injectivity, Surjectivity and Bijectivity (vii), which holds exactly when FF is a map F:Aβ†’BF:A\to B, and let

Ο„=βˆƒc (Ο€(c,V,V)∧μ(a,c,V))βˆ§βˆƒc (Ο€(c,R,V)∧μ(s,c,V))∧μ(Ξ½,V,R).\tau=\exists c\,\bigl(\pi(c,V,V)\wedge\mu(a,c,V)\bigr)\wedge\exists c\,\bigl(\pi(c,\mathbb{R},V)\wedge\mu(s,c,V)\bigr)\wedge\mu(\nu,V,\mathbb{R}).

It holds exactly when aa is a binary operation on VV, ss is a map RΓ—Vβ†’V\mathbb{R}\times V\to V, and Ξ½\nu is a map Vβ†’RV\to\mathbb{R}. Assume Ο„\tau. For u,v∈Vu,v\in V, ((u,v),w)∈a((u,v),w)\in a holds exactly for w=u+vw=u+v, by Predicativity of Expressions with Abbreviations, and Symbol-Free Forms of the Basic Defined Set Symbols (xi); for λ∈R\lambda\in\mathbb{R} and v∈Vv\in V, ((Ξ»,v),w)∈s((\lambda,v),w)\in s holds exactly for w=Ξ»vw=\lambda v, and for v∈Vv\in V, (v,y)∈ν(v,y)\in\nu holds exactly for y=βˆ₯vβˆ₯y=\lVert v\rVert, by Predicativity of Expressions with Abbreviations, and Symbol-Free Forms of the Basic Defined Set Symbols (x), since (Ξ»,v)∈RΓ—V(\lambda,v)\in\mathbb{R}\times V (Membership in a Cartesian Product, and the Cartesian Product of Two Sets Is a Set (i)) and the domains are RΓ—V\mathbb{R}\times V and VV (Functions, Values of a Function, and Functions from One Class to Another (iii)); and for r,t∈Rr,t\in\mathbb{R}, ((r,t),q)∈+((r,t),q)\in{+} and ((r,t),q)βˆˆβ‹…((r,t),q)\in{\cdot} hold exactly for q=r+tq=r+t and q=rβ‹…tq=r\cdot t, as ++ and β‹…\cdot are binary operations on R\mathbb{R}. These values lie in VV, VV, R\mathbb{R} and R\mathbb{R}. So in each formula below, every premise of these forms singles out exactly one set, which exists, and a universally quantified implication whose premises name values in this way states the property of the named values given in its conclusion.

Let ΞΆ(z)\zeta(z) be z∈Vβˆ§βˆ€w (w∈Vβ‡’((w,z),w)∈a)z\in V\wedge\forall w\,\bigl(w\in V\Rightarrow((w,z),w)\in a\bigr); under Ο„\tau it says that z∈Vz\in V and w+z=ww+z=w for every w∈Vw\in V. Let Ξ΅1,…,Ξ΅8\varepsilon_{1},\dots,\varepsilon_{8} be the formulas

Under Ο„\tau their premises name b=u+vb=u+v, d=(u+v)+wd=(u+v)+w, e=v+we=v+w, f=u+(v+w)f=u+(v+w) in the first; b=u+vb=u+v, d=v+ud=v+u in the second; b=ΞΊvb=\kappa v, d=Ξ»(ΞΊv)d=\lambda(\kappa v), e=Ξ»β‹…ΞΊe=\lambda\cdot\kappa in the fifth; b=u+vb=u+v, d=Ξ»(u+v)d=\lambda(u+v), e=Ξ»ue=\lambda u, f=Ξ»vf=\lambda v in the seventh; and b=Ξ»+ΞΊb=\lambda+\kappa, d=(Ξ»+ΞΊ)vd=(\lambda+\kappa)v, e=Ξ»ve=\lambda v, f=ΞΊvf=\kappa v in the eighth; and the conclusions ((e,v),d)∈s((e,v),d)\in s, ((1,v),v)∈s((1,v),v)\in s and ((e,f),d)∈a((e,f),d)\in a say d=(Ξ»β‹…ΞΊ)vd=(\lambda\cdot\kappa)v, 1v=v1v=v, d=Ξ»u+Ξ»vd=\lambda u+\lambda v and d=Ξ»v+ΞΊvd=\lambda v+\kappa v. So, under Ο„\tau, Ξ΅1,…,Ξ΅8\varepsilon_{1},\dots,\varepsilon_{8} state, in this order, Vector Space over a Field (i), Vector Space over a Field (ii), Vector Space over a Field (iii), Vector Space over a Field (iv), Vector Space over a Field (v), Vector Space over a Field (vi), Vector Space over a Field (vii) and Vector Space over a Field (viii) for K=RK=\mathbb{R}. As VV, a set variable, stands for a set, Vector Space over a Field (ix) and Vector Space over a Field (x) show that

Ξ³=Ο„βˆ§Ξ΅1βˆ§β‹―βˆ§Ξ΅8\gamma=\tau\wedge\varepsilon_{1}\wedge\dots\wedge\varepsilon_{8}

expresses Ξ“\Gamma. Under Ξ³\gamma, ΞΆ(z)\zeta(z) holds exactly for z=0Vz=0_{V}, by The Zero Vector, Negatives and Differences in a Vector Space (i).

The four conditions. By Predicative Formulas for Differences, Quotients, Absolute Values, Distances and the Strict Order of the Real Numbers, at Any Variable Positions (iii) with n=2n=2, i=0i=0 and k=1k=1, the condition "x0∈Rx_{0}\in\mathbb{R} and x1=∣x0∣x_{1}=|x_{0}|" is expressed by a predicative formula in x0,x1x_{0},x_{1} with parameters among R\mathbb{R}, ++, β‹…\cdot, 00, 11 and ≀\le; renaming x0x_{0} and x1x_{1} to Ξ»\lambda and tt (Predicativity under Renaming of Set Variables by Variables, of Formulas with Ordered Pairs, and of Formulas for Relations, Functions, Maps, Injectivity, Surjectivity and Bijectivity (i)) gives a predicative formula Ξ±(Ξ»,t)\alpha(\lambda,t) that holds exactly when λ∈R\lambda\in\mathbb{R} and t=∣λ∣t=|\lambda|. Then ∣λ∣∈R|\lambda|\in\mathbb{R}, being Ξ»\lambda or βˆ’Ξ»-\lambda. Let Ξ·1,…,Ξ·4\eta_{1},\dots,\eta_{4} be the formulas

βˆ€vβ€‰βˆ€y ((v∈V∧(v,y)∈ν)β‡’(0,y)βˆˆβ‰€),βˆ€vβ€‰βˆ€yβ€‰βˆ€z ((v∈V∧(v,y)∈ν∧y=0∧΢(z))β‡’v=z),βˆ€Ξ»β€‰βˆ€vβ€‰βˆ€wβ€‰βˆ€yβ€‰βˆ€tβ€‰βˆ€rβ€‰βˆ€q ((v∈V∧((Ξ»,v),w)∈s∧(w,y)∈ν∧α(Ξ»,t)∧(v,r)∈ν∧((t,r),q)βˆˆβ‹…)β‡’y=q),βˆ€uβ€‰βˆ€vβ€‰βˆ€wβ€‰βˆ€yβ€‰βˆ€rβ€‰βˆ€tβ€‰βˆ€q ((u∈V∧v∈V∧((u,v),w)∈a∧(w,y)∈ν∧(u,r)∈ν∧(v,t)∈ν∧((r,t),q)∈+)β‡’(y,q)βˆˆβ‰€).\begin{aligned} &\forall v\,\forall y\,\bigl((v\in V\wedge(v,y)\in\nu)\Rightarrow(0,y)\in{\le}\bigr),\\ &\forall v\,\forall y\,\forall z\,\bigl((v\in V\wedge(v,y)\in\nu\wedge y=0\wedge\zeta(z))\Rightarrow v=z\bigr),\\ &\forall\lambda\,\forall v\,\forall w\,\forall y\,\forall t\,\forall r\,\forall q\,\bigl((v\in V\wedge((\lambda,v),w)\in s\wedge(w,y)\in\nu\wedge\alpha(\lambda,t)\wedge(v,r)\in\nu\wedge((t,r),q)\in{\cdot})\Rightarrow y=q\bigr),\\ &\forall u\,\forall v\,\forall w\,\forall y\,\forall r\,\forall t\,\forall q\,\bigl((u\in V\wedge v\in V\wedge((u,v),w)\in a\wedge(w,y)\in\nu\wedge(u,r)\in\nu\wedge(v,t)\in\nu\wedge((r,t),q)\in{+})\Rightarrow(y,q)\in{\le}\bigr). \end{aligned}

Under Ξ³\gamma their premises name y=βˆ₯vβˆ₯y=\lVert v\rVert in the first; y=βˆ₯vβˆ₯y=\lVert v\rVert and z=0Vz=0_{V} in the second; w=Ξ»vw=\lambda v, y=βˆ₯Ξ»vβˆ₯y=\lVert\lambda v\rVert, t=∣λ∣t=|\lambda|, r=βˆ₯vβˆ₯r=\lVert v\rVert and q=βˆ£Ξ»βˆ£β€‰βˆ₯vβˆ₯q=|\lambda|\,\lVert v\rVert in the third; and w=u+vw=u+v, y=βˆ₯u+vβˆ₯y=\lVert u+v\rVert, r=βˆ₯uβˆ₯r=\lVert u\rVert, t=βˆ₯vβˆ₯t=\lVert v\rVert and q=βˆ₯uβˆ₯+βˆ₯vβˆ₯q=\lVert u\rVert+\lVert v\rVert in the fourth. So γ∧η1\gamma\wedge\eta_{1}, γ∧η2\gamma\wedge\eta_{2}, γ∧η3\gamma\wedge\eta_{3} and γ∧η4\gamma\wedge\eta_{4} express the conditions of (i), (ii), (iii) and (iv) with V=x0V=x_{0}, addition x1x_{1}, scalar multiplication x2x_{2} and βˆ₯β‹…βˆ₯=x3\lVert\cdot\rVert=x_{3}.

Norms and normed spaces. By Norms and Real Normed Spaces (v), under Ξ“\Gamma the function βˆ₯β‹…βˆ₯\lVert\cdot\rVert is a norm on VV exactly when it satisfies the four conditions, so the conjunction γ∧η1∧η2∧η3∧η4\gamma\wedge\eta_{1}\wedge\eta_{2}\wedge\eta_{3}\wedge\eta_{4} expresses the condition of (v). By Norms and Real Normed Spaces (vi), under Ξ“\Gamma the pair (V,βˆ₯β‹…βˆ₯)(V,\lVert\cdot\rVert) is a real normed space exactly when βˆ₯β‹…βˆ₯\lVert\cdot\rVert is a norm on the real vector space VV, so the same formula expresses the condition of (vi).

Each formula Ο†\varphi obtained above is thus a predicative formula in x0,x1,x2,x3x_{0},x_{1},x_{2},x_{3} in the sense of Renaming and Substituting Variables in Predicative Formulas, with parameters among R\mathbb{R}, ++, β‹…\cdot, 00, 11 and ≀\le. This proves every clause.
