TheoremBase

Every clause is read off the permutation sum: products are split at one factor or reindexed by a permutation, and the sum over the permutations is reindexed by a right translation, by inversion, or split into the permutations of sign 1 and of sign -1, which a transposition exchanges; the dependent-rows clause follows from row-linearity and equal-rows.

Preliminaries. R\mathbb{R} is an ordered field by The Real Numbers, with the Natural Numbers, Integers and Rationals Identified with Subsets of the Reals, and Completeness §reals, hence a field by Ordered Fields §ordered-field, and sums and products over finite sets are as in Commutative Rings, Fields and Ordered Fields: Standard Notation §rings. SnS_{n} is a finite nonempty set by Finite Sets: Removing an Element, Injective Self-Maps, Infinite Sets, Sets of Permutations, Pairs and Extended Tuples §permutations, whose elements are exactly the bijections [n]→[n][n]\to[n], by Permutations of a Set and the Set of Permutations of [n] §membership. For σ,τ∈Sn\sigma,\tau\in S_{n}: id[n]\mathrm{id}_{[n]}, σ∘τ\sigma\circ\tau and σ−1\sigma^{-1} lie in SnS_{n}, composition is associative, id[n]\mathrm{id}_{[n]} is neutral, and σ−1∘σ=σ∘σ−1=id[n]\sigma^{-1}\circ\sigma=\sigma\circ\sigma^{-1}=\mathrm{id}_{[n]}, by Permutations of [n]: Identity, Composition, Inverses, Translations and Transpositions §identity, Permutations of [n]: Identity, Composition, Inverses, Translations and Transpositions §composition and Permutations of [n]: Identity, Composition, Inverses, Translations and Transpositions §inverse.

(D) Let B∈Mn(R)B\in\mathcal{M}_{n}(\mathbb{R}). For σ∈Sn\sigma\in S_{n}, let qσB:[n]→Rq^{B}_{\sigma}:[n]\to\mathbb{R} be the map k↦Bkσ(k)k\mapsto B_{k\sigma(k)} and pB(σ)=∏k∈[n]Bkσ(k)p_{B}(\sigma)=\prod_{k\in[n]}B_{k\sigma(k)} its product, and let tB:Sn→Rt_{B}:S_{n}\to\mathbb{R}, tB(σ)=sgn⁡(σ) pB(σ)t_{B}(\sigma)=\operatorname{sgn}(\sigma)\,p_{B}(\sigma), all as in The Determinant Map and the Matrices Formed from a Square Matrix by Reindexing Rows, Replacing a Row and Deleting a Row and a Column Exist and Are Unique §terms with BB in place of AA. By Determinant of a Real Square Matrix §determinant and The Determinant Map and the Matrices Formed from a Square Matrix by Reindexing Rows, Replacing a Row and Deleting a Row and a Column Exist and Are Unique §determinant, det⁡B=Dn(B)=∑σ∈SntB(σ)\det B=D_{n}(B)=\sum_{\sigma\in S_{n}}t_{B}(\sigma).

(R) Reindexing a product. Let B,C∈Mn(R)B,C\in\mathcal{M}_{n}(\mathbb{R}), σ,τ∈Sn\sigma,\tau\in S_{n} and let g:[n]→[n]g:[n]\to[n] be a bijection with Ciσ(i)=Bg(i)τ(g(i))C_{i\sigma(i)}=B_{g(i)\tau(g(i))} for every i∈[n]i\in[n]. Then pC(σ)=pB(τ)p_{C}(\sigma)=p_{B}(\tau). Indeed, qσC=qτB∘gq^{C}_{\sigma}=q^{B}_{\tau}\circ g, as their values agree at every i∈[n]i\in[n]; and Iterated Operations over Finite Sets: Singletons, Disjoint Unions, Reindexing, Products of Sets, Termwise Combination, Homomorphisms and Intervals §reindexing, with the finite set [n][n] in both roles, the bijection gg and the map qτBq^{B}_{\tau}, gives ∏i∈[n]qτB(g(i))=∏k∈[n]qτB(k)\prod_{i\in[n]}q^{B}_{\tau}(g(i))=\prod_{k\in[n]}q^{B}_{\tau}(k), that is, pC(σ)=pB(τ)p_{C}(\sigma)=p_{B}(\tau).

Clause identity. By Identity Matrix and Standard Basis Vectors §identity, In∈Mn(R)I_{n}\in\mathcal{M}_{n}(\mathbb{R}) has the entries δij\delta_{ij}, with δij=1\delta_{ij}=1 if i=ji=j and δij=0\delta_{ij}=0 if i≠ji\neq j. Let σ∈Sn\sigma\in S_{n} with σ≠id[n]\sigma\neq\mathrm{id}_{[n]}. Then there is i∈[n]i\in[n] with σ(i)≠i\sigma(i)\neq i, and qσIn(i)=δiσ(i)=0q^{I_{n}}_{\sigma}(i)=\delta_{i\sigma(i)}=0; by Products over Finite Sets: a Single Factor, Vanishing in a Field, and Signs and Monotonicity in an Ordered Ring §zero, R\mathbb{R} being a field, pIn(σ)=0p_{I_{n}}(\sigma)=0, so tIn(σ)=0t_{I_{n}}(\sigma)=0. For σ=id[n]\sigma=\mathrm{id}_{[n]}, qσIn(k)=δkk=1q^{I_{n}}_{\sigma}(k)=\delta_{kk}=1 for every k∈[n]k\in[n], so Products over Finite Sets: a Single Factor, Vanishing in a Field, and Signs and Monotonicity in an Ordered Ring §single with x0=1∈[n]x_{0}=1\in[n] gives pIn(id[n])=1p_{I_{n}}(\mathrm{id}_{[n]})=1; and sgn⁡(id[n])=1\operatorname{sgn}(\mathrm{id}_{[n]})=1 by Rules for the Sign of a Permutation §identity, so tIn(id[n])=1t_{I_{n}}(\mathrm{id}_{[n]})=1. By (D) and Sums over Finite Sets in a Commutative Ring and in an Ordered Field: Distributivity, Products of Sums, Vanishing Terms, Sums over Pairs, Expanding Products of Sums, Counting, Comparison, Monotonicity and the Triangle Inequality §vanishing with y=id[n]y=\mathrm{id}_{[n]}, det⁡In=tIn(id[n])=1\det I_{n}=t_{I_{n}}(\mathrm{id}_{[n]})=1.

Clause row-linearity. Let ii, mm, cc and uu be as in the clause, and for l∈[m]l\in[m] write u(l)=u(l)∈Rnu^{(l)}=u(l)\in\mathbb{R}^{n}, a map [n]→R[n]\to\mathbb{R} by Euclidean Space Rn\mathbb{R}^n: n-Tuples of Real Numbers with Their Componentwise Operations §membership, and B(l)=A[i←u(l)]B^{(l)}=A[i\leftarrow u^{(l)}], so that Bij(l)=uj(l)B^{(l)}_{ij}=u^{(l)}_{j} and Bkj(l)=AkjB^{(l)}_{kj}=A_{kj} for all j,k∈[n]j,k\in[n] with k≠ik\neq i, by The Determinant Map and the Matrices Formed from a Square Matrix by Reindexing Rows, Replacing a Row and Deleting a Row and a Column Exist and Are Unique §row-replacement. Let F=[n]∖{i}F=[n]\setminus\{i\}; FF and {i}\{i\} are finite by Finite Sets: the Pigeonhole Principle, Uniqueness of the Length, Subsets, Unions, Products, Images, Bounded Sets of Natural Numbers, Extreme Elements, Sets of Maps, Finite Unions and Finite Choice §subset and Finite Sets: the Pigeonhole Principle, Uniqueness of the Length, Subsets, Unions, Products, Images, Bounded Sets of Natural Numbers, Extreme Elements, Sets of Maps, Finite Unions and Finite Choice §small, they are disjoint, and their union is [n][n].

(a) For C∈Mn(R)C\in\mathcal{M}_{n}(\mathbb{R}) and σ∈Sn\sigma\in S_{n}, pC(σ)=(∏k∈FCkσ(k))⋅Ciσ(i)p_{C}(\sigma)=\bigl(\prod_{k\in F}C_{k\sigma(k)}\bigr)\cdot C_{i\sigma(i)}, by Iterated Operations over Finite Sets: Singletons, Disjoint Unions, Reindexing, Products of Sets, Termwise Combination, Homomorphisms and Intervals §disjoint-union and Iterated Operations over Finite Sets: Singletons, Disjoint Unions, Reindexing, Products of Sets, Termwise Combination, Homomorphisms and Intervals §singleton for the map qσCq^{C}_{\sigma}, the products over FF and {i}\{i\} being those of its restrictions, by Sums and Products over a Finite Set and over an Interval §subsets.

(b) Let Q:Sn→RQ:S_{n}\to\mathbb{R} be the map Q(σ)=∏k∈FAkσ(k)Q(\sigma)=\prod_{k\in F}A_{k\sigma(k)}. For l∈[m]l\in[m], σ∈Sn\sigma\in S_{n} and k∈Fk\in F, Bkσ(k)(l)=Akσ(k)B^{(l)}_{k\sigma(k)}=A_{k\sigma(k)}, as k≠ik\neq i; so the restrictions of qσB(l)q^{B^{(l)}}_{\sigma} and of qσAq^{A}_{\sigma} to FF coincide, and both products over FF are Q(σ)Q(\sigma). With (a) and Biσ(i)(l)=uσ(i)(l)B^{(l)}_{i\sigma(i)}=u^{(l)}_{\sigma(i)} this gives, for every σ∈Sn\sigma\in S_{n} and l∈[m]l\in[m],

tA(σ)=sgn⁡(σ)(Q(σ) Aiσ(i)),tB(l)(σ)=sgn⁡(σ)(Q(σ) uσ(i)(l)).t_{A}(\sigma)=\operatorname{sgn}(\sigma)\bigl(Q(\sigma)\,A_{i\sigma(i)}\bigr),\qquad t_{B^{(l)}}(\sigma)=\operatorname{sgn}(\sigma)\bigl(Q(\sigma)\,u^{(l)}_{\sigma(i)}\bigr).

(c) Let G:[m]×Sn→RG:[m]\times S_{n}\to\mathbb{R} be the map G(l,σ)=cl tB(l)(σ)G(l,\sigma)=c_{l}\,t_{B^{(l)}}(\sigma). Fix σ∈Sn\sigma\in S_{n} and let w=sgn⁡(σ)Q(σ)w=\operatorname{sgn}(\sigma)Q(\sigma). The hypothesis with j=σ(i)j=\sigma(i) gives Aiσ(i)=∑l∈[m]cluσ(i)(l)A_{i\sigma(i)}=\sum_{l\in[m]}c_{l}u^{(l)}_{\sigma(i)}, so by (b) and Sums over Finite Sets in a Commutative Ring and in an Ordered Field: Distributivity, Products of Sums, Vanishing Terms, Sums over Pairs, Expanding Products of Sums, Counting, Comparison, Monotonicity and the Triangle Inequality §distributive,

tA(σ)=w∑l∈[m]cluσ(i)(l)=∑l∈[m]w (cluσ(i)(l))=∑l∈[m]G(l,σ).t_{A}(\sigma)=w\sum_{l\in[m]}c_{l}u^{(l)}_{\sigma(i)}=\sum_{l\in[m]}w\,\bigl(c_{l}u^{(l)}_{\sigma(i)}\bigr)=\sum_{l\in[m]}G(l,\sigma).

Fix l∈[m]l\in[m]. By Sums over Finite Sets in a Commutative Ring and in an Ordered Field: Distributivity, Products of Sums, Vanishing Terms, Sums over Pairs, Expanding Products of Sums, Counting, Comparison, Monotonicity and the Triangle Inequality §distributive and (D),

∑σ∈SnG(l,σ)=cl∑σ∈SntB(l)(σ)=cldet⁡B(l).\sum_{\sigma\in S_{n}}G(l,\sigma)=c_{l}\sum_{\sigma\in S_{n}}t_{B^{(l)}}(\sigma)=c_{l}\det B^{(l)}.

Hence, by (D) and Iterated Operations over Finite Sets: Singletons, Disjoint Unions, Reindexing, Products of Sets, Termwise Combination, Homomorphisms and Intervals §product for ++ on R\mathbb{R} with the finite sets [m][m] and SnS_{n} and the map GG,

det⁡A=∑σ∈Sn∑l∈[m]G(l,σ)=∑l∈[m]∑σ∈SnG(l,σ)=∑l=1mcldet⁡A[i←u(l)].\det A=\sum_{\sigma\in S_{n}}\sum_{l\in[m]}G(l,\sigma)=\sum_{l\in[m]}\sum_{\sigma\in S_{n}}G(l,\sigma)=\sum_{l=1}^{m}c_{l}\det A[i\leftarrow u^{(l)}].

Clause row-reindexing. Let π∈Sn\pi\in S_{n}; AπA^{\pi} has the entries (Aπ)ij=Aπ(i)j(A^{\pi})_{ij}=A_{\pi(i)j} by The Determinant Map and the Matrices Formed from a Square Matrix by Reindexing Rows, Replacing a Row and Deleting a Row and a Column Exist and Are Unique §row-reindexing. Let σ∈Sn\sigma\in S_{n} and τ=σ∘π−1∈Sn\tau=\sigma\circ\pi^{-1}\in S_{n}. For i∈[n]i\in[n], τ(π(i))=σ(π−1(π(i)))=σ(i)\tau(\pi(i))=\sigma(\pi^{-1}(\pi(i)))=\sigma(i), so (Aπ)iσ(i)=Aπ(i)τ(π(i))(A^{\pi})_{i\sigma(i)}=A_{\pi(i)\tau(\pi(i))}, and (R) with g=πg=\pi gives pAπ(σ)=pA(τ)p_{A^{\pi}}(\sigma)=p_{A}(\tau). Moreover τ∘π=σ∘(π−1∘π)=σ\tau\circ\pi=\sigma\circ(\pi^{-1}\circ\pi)=\sigma, so sgn⁡(σ)=sgn⁡(τ)sgn⁡(π)\operatorname{sgn}(\sigma)=\operatorname{sgn}(\tau)\operatorname{sgn}(\pi) by Rules for the Sign of a Permutation §multiplicative. Hence tAπ(σ)=sgn⁡(π) tA(R(σ))t_{A^{\pi}}(\sigma)=\operatorname{sgn}(\pi)\,t_{A}(R(\sigma)), where R:Sn→SnR:S_{n}\to S_{n}, R(σ)=σ∘π−1R(\sigma)=\sigma\circ\pi^{-1}, is the bijection Rπ−1R_{\pi^{-1}} of Permutations of [n]: Identity, Composition, Inverses, Translations and Transpositions §translation. By (D), Sums over Finite Sets in a Commutative Ring and in an Ordered Field: Distributivity, Products of Sums, Vanishing Terms, Sums over Pairs, Expanding Products of Sums, Counting, Comparison, Monotonicity and the Triangle Inequality §distributive and Iterated Operations over Finite Sets: Singletons, Disjoint Unions, Reindexing, Products of Sets, Termwise Combination, Homomorphisms and Intervals §reindexing (with the bijection RR and the map tAt_{A}),

det⁡Aπ=∑σ∈Snsgn⁡(π) tA(R(σ))=sgn⁡(π)∑σ∈SntA(R(σ))=sgn⁡(π)∑σ∈SntA(σ)=sgn⁡(π)det⁡A.\det A^{\pi}=\sum_{\sigma\in S_{n}}\operatorname{sgn}(\pi)\,t_{A}(R(\sigma))=\operatorname{sgn}(\pi)\sum_{\sigma\in S_{n}}t_{A}(R(\sigma))=\operatorname{sgn}(\pi)\sum_{\sigma\in S_{n}}t_{A}(\sigma)=\operatorname{sgn}(\pi)\det A.

Clause equal-rows. Let pp and qq be as in the clause and θ=θpq∈Sn\theta=\theta_{pq}\in S_{n} the transposition of pp and qq: θ(p)=q\theta(p)=q, θ(q)=p\theta(q)=p, θ(k)=k\theta(k)=k for k∉{p,q}k\notin\{p,q\}, and θ∘θ=id[n]\theta\circ\theta=\mathrm{id}_{[n]} by Permutations of [n]: Identity, Composition, Inverses, Translations and Transpositions §transposition; sgn⁡(θ)=−1\operatorname{sgn}(\theta)=-1 by Rules for the Sign of a Permutation §transposition.

(a) For k,j∈[n]k,j\in[n], Aθ(k)j=AkjA_{\theta(k)j}=A_{kj}: for k=pk=p this is Aqj=ApjA_{qj}=A_{pj}, for k=qk=q it is Apj=AqjA_{pj}=A_{qj}, and otherwise θ(k)=k\theta(k)=k.

(b) Let σ∈Sn\sigma\in S_{n} and τ=σ∘θ∈Sn\tau=\sigma\circ\theta\in S_{n}. For i∈[n]i\in[n], τ(θ(i))=σ(θ(θ(i)))=σ(i)\tau(\theta(i))=\sigma(\theta(\theta(i)))=\sigma(i), so by (a) Aiσ(i)=Aθ(i)σ(i)=Aθ(i)τ(θ(i))A_{i\sigma(i)}=A_{\theta(i)\sigma(i)}=A_{\theta(i)\tau(\theta(i))}, and (R) with B=C=AB=C=A and g=θg=\theta gives pA(σ)=pA(σ∘θ)p_{A}(\sigma)=p_{A}(\sigma\circ\theta). By Rules for the Sign of a Permutation §multiplicative, sgn⁡(σ∘θ)=−sgn⁡(σ)\operatorname{sgn}(\sigma\circ\theta)=-\operatorname{sgn}(\sigma), and so tA(σ∘θ)=−tA(σ)t_{A}(\sigma\circ\theta)=-t_{A}(\sigma).

(c) Let E={σ∈Sn:sgn⁡(σ)=1}E=\{\sigma\in S_{n}:\operatorname{sgn}(\sigma)=1\} and E′=Sn∖EE'=S_{n}\setminus E; both are finite by Finite Sets: the Pigeonhole Principle, Uniqueness of the Length, Subsets, Unions, Products, Images, Bounded Sets of Natural Numbers, Extreme Elements, Sets of Maps, Finite Unions and Finite Choice §subset, they are disjoint, and their union is SnS_{n}. By Rules for the Sign of a Permutation §values, and as 1≠−11\neq-1 in R\mathbb{R} (if 1=−11=-1 then 1+1=1+(−1)=01+1=1+(-1)=0 by Negatives, Differences, Reciprocals and Quotients §negative, contradicting Closure Facts in an Ordered Field: Negatives, Differences, Quotients, Absolute Values, Powers, Natural Numbers, Halves and Minima §two, which gives 1+1=2≠01+1=2\neq0), σ∈E′\sigma\in E' if and only if sgn⁡(σ)=−1\operatorname{sgn}(\sigma)=-1. By (b), for σ∈E\sigma\in E, sgn⁡(σ∘θ)=−1\operatorname{sgn}(\sigma\circ\theta)=-1, so σ∘θ∈E′\sigma\circ\theta\in E'; and for σ∈E′\sigma\in E', sgn⁡(σ∘θ)=1\operatorname{sgn}(\sigma\circ\theta)=1, so σ∘θ∈E\sigma\circ\theta\in E. Let Rθ:Sn→SnR_{\theta}:S_{n}\to S_{n}, Rθ(σ)=σ∘θR_{\theta}(\sigma)=\sigma\circ\theta, be the map of Permutations of [n]: Identity, Composition, Inverses, Translations and Transpositions §translation; its restrictions are maps g:E→E′g:E\to E' and h:E′→Eh:E'\to E. For σ∈E\sigma\in E, h(g(σ))=(σ∘θ)∘θ=σ∘(θ∘θ)=σh(g(\sigma))=(\sigma\circ\theta)\circ\theta=\sigma\circ(\theta\circ\theta)=\sigma, and likewise g(h(σ))=σg(h(\sigma))=\sigma for σ∈E′\sigma\in E'; so h∘g=idEh\circ g=\mathrm{id}_{E} and g∘h=idE′g\circ h=\mathrm{id}_{E'}, and gg is a bijection by Basic Properties of Functions: Equality, Composition, Identity, Inverse and Restriction §inverse-criterion.

(d) By (D) and Iterated Operations over Finite Sets: Singletons, Disjoint Unions, Reindexing, Products of Sets, Termwise Combination, Homomorphisms and Intervals §disjoint-union, det⁡A=s+s′\det A=s+s' with s=∑σ∈EtA(σ)s=\sum_{\sigma\in E}t_{A}(\sigma) and s′=∑σ∈E′tA(σ)s'=\sum_{\sigma\in E'}t_{A}(\sigma), the sums over EE and E′E' being those of the restrictions of tAt_{A}, by Sums and Products over a Finite Set and over an Interval §subsets. By Iterated Operations over Finite Sets: Singletons, Disjoint Unions, Reindexing, Products of Sets, Termwise Combination, Homomorphisms and Intervals §reindexing with the bijection gg and the map tA∣E′t_{A}|_{E'}, then (b), and Sums over Finite Sets in a Commutative Ring and in an Ordered Field: Distributivity, Products of Sums, Vanishing Terms, Sums over Pairs, Expanding Products of Sums, Counting, Comparison, Monotonicity and the Triangle Inequality §distributive with c=−1c=-1,

s′=∑σ∈EtA(g(σ))=∑σ∈E(−1)⋅tA(σ)=−s.s'=\sum_{\sigma\in E}t_{A}(g(\sigma))=\sum_{\sigma\in E}(-1)\cdot t_{A}(\sigma)=-s.

Hence det⁡A=s+(−s)=0\det A=s+(-s)=0.

Clause zero-row. Let ii be as in the clause. For every σ∈Sn\sigma\in S_{n}, qσA(i)=Aiσ(i)=0q^{A}_{\sigma}(i)=A_{i\sigma(i)}=0, as σ(i)∈[n]\sigma(i)\in[n]; so pA(σ)=0p_{A}(\sigma)=0 by Products over Finite Sets: a Single Factor, Vanishing in a Field, and Signs and Monotonicity in an Ordered Ring §zero and tA(σ)=0t_{A}(\sigma)=0. By (D) and Sums over Finite Sets in a Commutative Ring and in an Ordered Field: Distributivity, Products of Sums, Vanishing Terms, Sums over Pairs, Expanding Products of Sums, Counting, Comparison, Monotonicity and the Triangle Inequality §vanishing with y=id[n]y=\mathrm{id}_{[n]}, det⁡A=tA(id[n])=0\det A=t_{A}(\mathrm{id}_{[n]})=0.

Clause dependent-rows. Let xx be as in the clause. The origin 00 of Rn\mathbb{R}^{n} has every component 00, by Euclidean Space Rn\mathbb{R}^n: n-Tuples of Real Numbers with Their Componentwise Operations §origin and Pointwise Operations on Real-Valued Maps §constants; as x≠0x\neq0, Euclidean Space Rn\mathbb{R}^n: n-Tuples of Real Numbers with Their Componentwise Operations §equality gives k∈[n]k\in[n] with xk≠0x_{k}\neq0, which we fix. Since xk≠0x_{k}\neq0, the reciprocal xk−1∈Rx_{k}^{-1}\in\mathbb{R} of Negatives, Differences, Reciprocals and Quotients §reciprocal satisfies xkxk−1=1x_{k}x_{k}^{-1}=1. Let d=−xk−1d=-x_{k}^{-1}, with the negative of Negatives, Differences, Reciprocals and Quotients §negative, so that d xk=−1d\,x_{k}=-1. Let u:[n]→Rnu:[n]\to\mathbb{R}^{n}, l↦u(l)l\mapsto u^{(l)}, be the map with uj(l)=Alju^{(l)}_{j}=A_{lj} for all l,j∈[n]l,j\in[n].

The coefficients. Let c=d x+ek∈Rnc=d\,x+e_{k}\in\mathbb{R}^{n}, formed with the operations of Euclidean Space Rn\mathbb{R}^n: n-Tuples of Real Numbers with Their Componentwise Operations §operations and the standard basis vector eke_{k} of Identity Matrix and Standard Basis Vectors §basis; so cl=d xl+δlkc_{l}=d\,x_{l}+\delta_{lk} for l∈[n]l\in[n], and ck=d xk+1=0c_{k}=d\,x_{k}+1=0. For j∈[n]j\in[n], by Iterated Operations over Finite Sets: Singletons, Disjoint Unions, Reindexing, Products of Sets, Termwise Combination, Homomorphisms and Intervals §termwise for ++, Sums over Finite Sets in a Commutative Ring and in an Ordered Field: Distributivity, Products of Sums, Vanishing Terms, Sums over Pairs, Expanding Products of Sums, Counting, Comparison, Monotonicity and the Triangle Inequality §distributive, Sums over Finite Sets in a Commutative Ring and in an Ordered Field: Distributivity, Products of Sums, Vanishing Terms, Sums over Pairs, Expanding Products of Sums, Counting, Comparison, Monotonicity and the Triangle Inequality §vanishing with y=ky=k (as δlkAlj=0\delta_{lk}A_{lj}=0 for l≠kl\neq k and δkkAkj=Akj\delta_{kk}A_{kj}=A_{kj}), and the hypothesis,

∑l=1ncluj(l)=∑l∈[n](d (xlAlj)+δlkAlj)=d∑l∈[n]xlAlj+∑l∈[n]δlkAlj=d⋅0+Akj=Akj.\sum_{l=1}^{n}c_{l}u^{(l)}_{j}=\sum_{l\in[n]}\bigl(d\,(x_{l}A_{lj})+\delta_{lk}A_{lj}\bigr)=d\sum_{l\in[n]}x_{l}A_{lj}+\sum_{l\in[n]}\delta_{lk}A_{lj}=d\cdot0+A_{kj}=A_{kj}.

So the clause row-linearity applies with kk in place of ii, nn in place of mm, and cc and uu, and gives det⁡A=∑l=1ncldet⁡A[k←u(l)]\det A=\sum_{l=1}^{n}c_{l}\det A[k\leftarrow u^{(l)}]. Let l∈[n]l\in[n] and C=A[k←u(l)]C=A[k\leftarrow u^{(l)}]. If l≠kl\neq k, then, by The Determinant Map and the Matrices Formed from a Square Matrix by Reindexing Rows, Replacing a Row and Deleting a Row and a Column Exist and Are Unique §row-replacement, Ckj=uj(l)=Alj=CljC_{kj}=u^{(l)}_{j}=A_{lj}=C_{lj} for every j∈[n]j\in[n], so det⁡C=0\det C=0 by the clause equal-rows, applied to CC with kk and ll in place of pp and qq, and cldet⁡C=0c_{l}\det C=0. By Sums over Finite Sets in a Commutative Ring and in an Ordered Field: Distributivity, Products of Sums, Vanishing Terms, Sums over Pairs, Expanding Products of Sums, Counting, Comparison, Monotonicity and the Triangle Inequality §vanishing with y=ky=k, det⁡A=ckdet⁡A[k←u(k)]=0\det A=c_{k}\det A[k\leftarrow u^{(k)}]=0, as ck=0c_{k}=0.

Clause scalar. Let μ∈R\mu\in\mathbb{R}. By Real Matrices: the Set of Real m x n Matrices with Their Entrywise Operations §operations, μA∈Mn(R)\mu A\in\mathcal{M}_{n}(\mathbb{R}) and (μA)ij=μAij(\mu A)_{ij}=\mu A_{ij}. For σ∈Sn\sigma\in S_{n} and k∈[n]k\in[n], qσμA(k)=μAkσ(k)=κ(k) qσA(k)q^{\mu A}_{\sigma}(k)=\mu A_{k\sigma(k)}=\kappa(k)\,q^{A}_{\sigma}(k), so by Iterated Operations over Finite Sets: Singletons, Disjoint Unions, Reindexing, Products of Sets, Termwise Combination, Homomorphisms and Intervals §termwise for ⋅\cdot, pμA(σ)=(∏k∈[n]κ(k))pA(σ)p_{\mu A}(\sigma)=\bigl(\prod_{k\in[n]}\kappa(k)\bigr)p_{A}(\sigma). Here ∏k∈[n]κ(k)=∏k=1nμ=μn\prod_{k\in[n]}\kappa(k)=\prod_{k=1}^{n}\mu=\mu^{n}, by Iterated Operations: Finite Sums and Finite Products §iterated and Powers with Exponents in the Natural Numbers with Zero §power. Hence tμA(σ)=μn tA(σ)t_{\mu A}(\sigma)=\mu^{n}\,t_{A}(\sigma), and by (D) and Sums over Finite Sets in a Commutative Ring and in an Ordered Field: Distributivity, Products of Sums, Vanishing Terms, Sums over Pairs, Expanding Products of Sums, Counting, Comparison, Monotonicity and the Triangle Inequality §distributive, det⁡(μA)=∑σ∈Snμn tA(σ)=μndet⁡A\det(\mu A)=\sum_{\sigma\in S_{n}}\mu^{n}\,t_{A}(\sigma)=\mu^{n}\det A.

Clause transpose. By Transpose of a Real Matrix §transpose with m=nm=n, A⊤∈Mn(R)A^{\top}\in\mathcal{M}_{n}(\mathbb{R}) and (A⊤)ji=Aij(A^{\top})_{ji}=A_{ij} for i,j∈[n]i,j\in[n]. Let σ∈Sn\sigma\in S_{n}. For i∈[n]i\in[n], σ−1(σ(i))=i\sigma^{-1}(\sigma(i))=i; so (A⊤)iσ(i)=Aσ(i)i=Aσ(i)σ−1(σ(i))(A^{\top})_{i\sigma(i)}=A_{\sigma(i)i}=A_{\sigma(i)\sigma^{-1}(\sigma(i))}, and (R) with C=A⊤C=A^{\top}, B=AB=A, τ=σ−1\tau=\sigma^{-1} and g=σg=\sigma gives pA⊤(σ)=pA(σ−1)p_{A^{\top}}(\sigma)=p_{A}(\sigma^{-1}). By Rules for the Sign of a Permutation §inverse, sgn⁡(σ)=sgn⁡(σ−1)\operatorname{sgn}(\sigma)=\operatorname{sgn}(\sigma^{-1}); so tA⊤(σ)=tA(J(σ))t_{A^{\top}}(\sigma)=t_{A}(J(\sigma)), where J:Sn→SnJ:S_{n}\to S_{n}, J(σ)=σ−1J(\sigma)=\sigma^{-1}, is the bijection of Permutations of [n]: Identity, Composition, Inverses, Translations and Transpositions §inversion. By (D) and Iterated Operations over Finite Sets: Singletons, Disjoint Unions, Reindexing, Products of Sets, Termwise Combination, Homomorphisms and Intervals §reindexing with the bijection JJ and the map tAt_{A}, det⁡(A⊤)=∑σ∈SntA(J(σ))=∑σ∈SntA(σ)=det⁡A\det(A^{\top})=\sum_{\sigma\in S_{n}}t_{A}(J(\sigma))=\sum_{\sigma\in S_{n}}t_{A}(\sigma)=\det A.
