The formula for the segment [n] is combined with the formulas for maps, injectivity and surjectivity, and the values x(i) and x(j) are substituted under the guard that x is a function.

Proof

Auxiliary formulas. Let seg(s,n)\mathrm{seg}(s,n) be the formula of Induction over Finite Sets, and Predicative Formulas for the Segments [n] and for Finiteness (i), with the set variables ss and nn for its zz and nn and the parameters N\mathbb{N} and ≤\le for its class variables YY and RR; it is predicative, and for every set ss and every n∈N0n\in\mathbb{N}_{0}, seg(s,n)\mathrm{seg}(s,n) holds if and only if s=[n]s=[n]. Let μ\mu, ι\iota and σ\sigma be the formulas of Predicativity under Renaming of Set Variables by Variables, of Formulas with Ordered Pairs, and of Formulas for Relations, Functions, Maps, Injectivity, Surjectivity and Bijectivity (vii), Predicativity under Renaming of Set Variables by Variables, of Formulas with Ordered Pairs, and of Formulas for Relations, Functions, Maps, Injectivity, Surjectivity and Bijectivity (viii) and Predicativity under Renaming of Set Variables by Variables, of Formulas with Ordered Pairs, and of Formulas for Relations, Functions, Maps, Injectivity, Surjectivity and Bijectivity (ix), and let (i,j)∈≤(i,j)\in{\le} and (u,v)∈<(u,v)\in{<}, for the parameters ≤\le of N0\mathbb{N}_{0} and << of R\mathbb{R}, and (i,u)∈x(i,u)\in x and (j,v)∈x(j,v)\in x be the formulas of Predicativity under Renaming of Set Variables by Variables, of Formulas with Ordered Pairs, and of Formulas for Relations, Functions, Maps, Injectivity, Surjectivity and Bijectivity (iii). These formulas are used with the set variables below put for their displayed ones, by Predicativity under Renaming of Set Variables by Variables, of Formulas with Ordered Pairs, and of Formulas for Relations, Functions, Maps, Injectivity, Surjectivity and Bijectivity (i); the letters ii, jj, ss, uu and vv are set variables distinct from each other, from ff, xx, nn, BB and from the parameters.

Let

θ(x,i,j):∀u ((i,u)∈x⇒∀v ((j,v)∈x⇒(u,v)∈<)).\theta(x,i,j):\quad\forall u\,\bigl((i,u)\in x\Rightarrow\forall v\,((j,v)\in x\Rightarrow(u,v)\in{<})\bigr).

By Predicative Substitution of Values of Functions and Binary Operations, and Predicative Formulas for Negatives, Differences, Absolute Values, Distances, Reciprocals and Quotients in an Ordered Field (i), with jj, vv and xx for its xx, zz and FF and the predicative formula (u,v)∈<(u,v)\in{<} for its φ\varphi, the formula ∀v ((j,v)∈x⇒(u,v)∈<)\forall v\,((j,v)\in x\Rightarrow(u,v)\in{<}) is predicative, and, whenever the value of xx is a function, it holds if and only if (u,x(j))∈<(u,x(j))\in{<} whenever j∈dom⁡xj\in\operatorname{dom}x. Applying Predicative Substitution of Values of Functions and Binary Operations, and Predicative Formulas for Negatives, Differences, Absolute Values, Distances, Reciprocals and Quotients in an Ordered Field (i) again, with ii, uu and xx for its xx, zz and FF and this formula for its φ\varphi, θ(x,i,j)\theta(x,i,j) is predicative, and, whenever the value of xx is a function, it holds if and only if, for i∈dom⁡xi\in\operatorname{dom}x, (x(i),x(j))∈<(x(i),x(j))\in{<} whenever j∈dom⁡xj\in\operatorname{dom}x. So, whenever xx is a function and i,j∈dom⁡xi,j\in\operatorname{dom}x, θ(x,i,j)\theta(x,i,j) holds if and only if x(i)<x(j)x(i)<x(j).

The formulas. Let

β(f,n,B):n∈N0∧∃s (seg(s,n)∧μ(f,s,B)∧ι(f)∧σ(f,B)),\beta(f,n,B):\quad n\in\mathbb{N}_{0}\wedge\exists s\,\bigl(\mathrm{seg}(s,n)\wedge\mu(f,s,B)\wedge\iota(f)\wedge\sigma(f,B)\bigr), λ(x,n,B):n∈N0∧∃s (seg(s,n)∧μ(x,s,B)∧ι(x)∧σ(x,B)∧∀i ∀j ((i∈s∧j∈s∧(i,j)∈≤∧¬ i=j)⇒θ(x,i,j))).\lambda(x,n,B):\quad n\in\mathbb{N}_{0}\wedge\exists s\,\Bigl(\mathrm{seg}(s,n)\wedge\mu(x,s,B)\wedge\iota(x)\wedge\sigma(x,B)\wedge\forall i\,\forall j\,\bigl((i\in s\wedge j\in s\wedge(i,j)\in{\le}\wedge\neg\,i=j)\Rightarrow\theta(x,i,j)\bigr)\Bigr).

The free variables of β\beta are among ff, nn, BB and the parameters N0\mathbb{N}_{0}, N\mathbb{N} and ≤\le, and those of λ\lambda among xx, nn, BB and the parameters N0\mathbb{N}_{0}, N\mathbb{N}, ≤\le and <<. The formulas seg\mathrm{seg}, μ\mu, ι\iota, σ\sigma, θ\theta and the pair memberships are predicative by the results cited above, and β\beta and λ\lambda are built from them, from memberships and from equations by connectives and by quantifiers over set variables only; so no quantifier in them is applied to a class variable, and they are predicative by Predicativity of Expressions with Abbreviations, and Symbol-Free Forms of the Basic Defined Set Symbols (i).

Proof of (i). Let ff, nn and BB be sets. If n∉N0n\notin\mathbb{N}_{0}, both β(f,n,B)\beta(f,n,B) and the condition fail. Let n∈N0n\in\mathbb{N}_{0}. Then [n][n] is a set by The Segments [n]: Each Is a Set, and 1 Lies in [n] for n ∈ ℕ (i), and seg(s,n)\mathrm{seg}(s,n) holds exactly for s=[n]s=[n]; so β(f,n,B)\beta(f,n,B) holds if and only if μ(f,[n],B)∧ι(f)∧σ(f,B)\mu(f,[n],B)\wedge\iota(f)\wedge\sigma(f,B) holds, that is, by Predicativity under Renaming of Set Variables by Variables, of Formulas with Ordered Pairs, and of Formulas for Relations, Functions, Maps, Injectivity, Surjectivity and Bijectivity (x), if and only if ff is a bijection from [n][n] onto BB. So β\beta expresses the condition of (i), as in Conditions Expressed by a Predicative Formula, and Guards (ii).

Proof of (ii). Let xx, nn and BB be sets. As in the proof of (i), if n∉N0n\notin\mathbb{N}_{0} both λ(x,n,B)\lambda(x,n,B) and the condition fail; and for n∈N0n\in\mathbb{N}_{0}, λ(x,n,B)\lambda(x,n,B) holds if and only if xx is a bijection from [n][n] onto BB and

∀i ∀j ((i∈[n]∧j∈[n]∧(i,j)∈≤∧¬ i=j)⇒θ(x,i,j))\forall i\,\forall j\,\bigl((i\in[n]\wedge j\in[n]\wedge(i,j)\in{\le}\wedge\neg\,i=j)\Rightarrow\theta(x,i,j)\bigr)

holds, by Predicativity under Renaming of Set Variables by Variables, of Formulas with Ordered Pairs, and of Formulas for Relations, Functions, Maps, Injectivity, Surjectivity and Bijectivity (x). Let xx be such a bijection. Then xx is a map x:[n]→Bx:[n]\to B, so it is a function with dom⁡x=[n]\operatorname{dom}x=[n] by Functions, Values of a Function, and Functions from One Class to Another (iii). For i,j∈[n]i,j\in[n], which lie in N0\mathbb{N}_{0}, (i,j)∈≤∧¬ i=j(i,j)\in{\le}\wedge\neg\,i=j holds if and only if i<ji<j in N0\mathbb{N}_{0}, by The Order on Omega Is a Well-Order with Membership as Its Strict Order, and Nothing Lies between n and Its Successor (ii), and θ(x,i,j)\theta(x,i,j) holds if and only if x(i)<x(j)x(i)<x(j), by the auxiliary formulas. So the display holds if and only if x(i)<x(j)x(i)<x(j) for all i,j∈[n]i,j\in[n] with i<ji<j. Hence λ(x,n,B)\lambda(x,n,B) holds if and only if the condition of (ii) holds: λ\lambda expresses it, as in Conditions Expressed by a Predicative Formula, and Guards (ii).
