The closed interval is a nonempty compact subset of the real line, so the extreme value theorem on compact subsets of a metric space gives the extremes; the bound is |f(p)| + |f(q)|.

Proof

Proof of (ii). We apply Closed Interval [a,b][a,b] is Compact in R\mathbb{R} (i) and Extreme Value Theorem on a Compact Subset of a Metric Space (i) to the metric space (X,d)=(R,dR)(X,d)=(\mathbb{R},d_{\mathbb{R}}). Both statements use this distance dRd_{\mathbb{R}}, and their topologies TR\mathcal{T}_{\mathbb{R}} and Td\mathcal{T}_{d} are then the same set TdR\mathcal{T}_{d_{\mathbb{R}}} of open subsets of R\mathbb{R}, which exists by The Open Sets of a Metric Space Form a Set, Given by a Predicative Formula (ii); and [a,b][a,b], the set of all t∈Rt\in\mathbb{R} with a≀t≀ba\le t\le b by Intervals of the Real Line (ii), is the set [a,b][a,b] of the first statement. So the first statement, applied to a≀ba\le b, shows that K=[a,b]K=[a,b] is compact in (R,TdR)(\mathbb{R},\mathcal{T}_{d_{\mathbb{R}}}). Moreover Kβ‰ βˆ…K\neq\emptyset, since a≀a≀ba\le a\le b gives a∈Ka\in K, and f:Kβ†’Rf:K\to\mathbb{R} is continuous on KK by hypothesis. Thus the second statement applies to KK and ff, and gives xmin⁑,xmax⁑∈[a,b]x_{\min},x_{\max}\in[a,b] with f(xmin⁑)≀f(x)≀f(xmax⁑)f(x_{\min})\le f(x)\le f(x_{\max}) for every x∈[a,b]x\in[a,b]. Put p=xmin⁑p=x_{\min} and q=xmax⁑q=x_{\max}.

Proof of (i). Let pp and qq be as in (ii), and put M=∣f(p)∣+∣f(q)∣M=|f(p)|+|f(q)|, a real number. Let x∈[a,b]x\in[a,b]. By Rules of Arithmetic and Order in an Ordered Field (x), βˆ’βˆ£f(p)βˆ£β‰€f(p)-|f(p)|\le f(p) and f(q)β‰€βˆ£f(q)∣f(q)\le|f(q)|, and ∣uβˆ£β‰€M|u|\le M for every real uu with βˆ’M≀u≀M-M\le u\le M. As 0β‰€βˆ£f(p)∣0\le|f(p)| and 0β‰€βˆ£f(q)∣0\le|f(q)|,

βˆ’Mβ‰€βˆ’βˆ£f(p)βˆ£β‰€f(p)≀f(x)≀f(q)β‰€βˆ£f(q)βˆ£β‰€M,-M\le-|f(p)|\le f(p)\le f(x)\le f(q)\le|f(q)|\le M ,

and so ∣f(x)βˆ£β‰€M|f(x)|\le M.
