TheoremBase

A failure of the supersolution property at a strict minimum is used to add to w a small bump built from a coupling test function minus the free energy; the bump stays below g by the gap at the failure point, and it satisfies the subsolution inequality because regular plan subgradients force the score and a compactness argument with closed score and upper shift semicontinuity transfers the strict failure inequality to nearby points.

Conventions. The conventions of The Discounted HJB Equation with Free Langevin Noise in a Wall, Envelope Form: Standing Notation are in force, with ρ,σ,R\rho,\sigma,R, D\mathcal{D}, E\mathcal{E}, DΞ\mathcal{D}_{\Xi}, Ξ\Xi and H\mathcal{H} as fixed there; lifts HM\mathcal{H}_{M} are those of Plan Jets and Hamiltonians on Square-Integrable Noncommutative Laws: Standing Notation §lifts. Sums, real multiples, the pairing ⟨⋅,⋅⟩2\langle\cdot,\cdot\rangle_{2} and the norm ∥⋅∥2\lVert\cdot\rVert_{2} of L2L^{2} dd-tuples are those of Plan Jets and Hamiltonians on Square-Integrable Noncommutative Laws: Standing Notation §pairing, that is, the operations, inner product and norm of the Hilbert space HdH^{d} (Sums, Real Multiples and the Pairing of Square-Integrable Tuples in a Tracial W*-Probability Space §operations, Sums, Real Multiples and the Pairing of Square-Integrable Tuples in a Tracial W*-Probability Space §pairing); so the Cauchy--Schwarz and triangle inequalities hold for them. By The Discounted HJB Equation with Free Langevin Noise in a Wall, Envelope Form: Standing Notation §metric, D⊆Σd,R\mathcal{D}\subseteq\Sigma_{d,R} carries the metric W2W_{2}, and envelopes and semicontinuity on D\mathcal{D} refer to it.

Isometry. By The Metric Completion is a Complete Metric Space with a Dense Isometric Copy of the Space, and Maps Preserving Cauchy Sequences Extend to It §isometry, applied to (Σd,W2)(\Sigma_{d},W_{2}), whose completion is Σd2\Sigma^{2}_{d} (Square-Integrable Noncommutative Laws: the Wasserstein Completion of the Laws, Affine Push-Forwards, Moments, Couplings and Cost §laws), W^2(κd(λ),κd(λ′))=W2(λ,λ′)\widehat{W}_{2}(\kappa_{d}(\lambda),\kappa_{d}(\lambda'))=W_{2}(\lambda,\lambda') for λ,λ′∈Σd\lambda,\lambda'\in\Sigma_{d}; in particular κd\kappa_{d} is injective.

Law invariance. If Z,Z′Z,Z' are L2L^{2} tuples, possibly of different tracial W*-probability spaces, with law(Z)=law(Z′)\mathrm{law}(Z)=\mathrm{law}(Z'), and TT is an affine datum, then law(TZ)=law(TZ′)\mathrm{law}(TZ)=\mathrm{law}(TZ') by Calculus of Laws of Square-Integrable Tuples: Bounded Tuples, the Lipschitz Bound, Moments, Affine Push-Forwards, Couplings and Embeddings §push-forward, the inner products of components of ZZ agree with those of Z′Z' by Calculus of Laws of Square-Integrable Tuples: Bounded Tuples, the Lipschitz Bound, Moments, Affine Push-Forwards, Couplings and Embeddings §moments, and lifts take equal values by Lifts of Functions on Square-Integrable Noncommutative Laws to Square-Integrable Tuples §lift. Hence every norm, pairing and lifted value formed from real affine combinations of blocks of ZZ equals the corresponding quantity for Z′Z'.

Bounded realisations. Let (H,M,Ω)(H,M,\Omega) be a tracial W*-probability space and k∈Nk\in\mathbb{N}. If ZZ is an L2L^{2} kk-tuple of it with law(Z)=κk(λ)\mathrm{law}(Z)=\kappa_{k}(\lambda) for some λ∈Σk,r\lambda\in\Sigma_{k,r}, then by Square-Integrable Tuples with a Bounded Law are Vacuum Tuples of Bounded Self-Adjoint Operators §operator there is exactly one self-adjoint kk-tuple zz in MM with zΩ=Zz\Omega=Z, and it satisfies λz=λ\lambda_{z}=\lambda by Square-Integrable Tuples with a Bounded Law are Vacuum Tuples of Bounded Self-Adjoint Operators §law. Every law in Σk\Sigma_{k} lies in some Σk,r\Sigma_{k,r} (Noncommutative Laws of Finitely Many Self-Adjoint Variables with a Norm Bound §law). Conversely, for a self-adjoint kk-tuple zz in MM, λz∈Σk\lambda_{z}\in\Sigma_{k} and law(zΩ)=κk(λz)\mathrm{law}(z\Omega)=\kappa_{k}(\lambda_{z}) (Laws of Self-Adjoint Tuples in a Tracial W*-Probability Space: Moments, Affine Images, Couplings, Embeddings and L^2 Approximation §law, Calculus of Laws of Square-Integrable Tuples: Bounded Tuples, the Lipschitz Bound, Moments, Affine Push-Forwards, Couplings and Embeddings §bounded), and for self-adjoint tuples z,z′z,z' in MM one has λ(z,z′)∈Π(λz,λz′)\lambda_{(z,z')}\in\Pi(\lambda_{z},\lambda_{z'}) by Laws of Self-Adjoint Tuples in a Tracial W*-Probability Space: Moments, Affine Images, Couplings, Embeddings and L^2 Approximation §coupling, so that λ(z,z′)∘ι1=λz\lambda_{(z,z')}\circ\iota^{1}=\lambda_{z} by Couplings of Two Noncommutative Laws and Their Quadratic Cost §coupling. Moreover, MM is closed under sums, products and complex multiples (Tracial W*-Probability Spaces §space). For a bounded plan ϖ\varpi at λ∈Σd\lambda\in\Sigma_{d} and any L2L^{2} dd-tuples X,PX,P with law(X,P)=κ2d(ϖ)\mathrm{law}(X,P)=\kappa_{2d}(\varpi) one has law(X)=pr#1κ2d(ϖ)=κd(λ)\mathrm{law}(X)=\mathrm{pr}^{1}_{\#}\kappa_{2d}(\varpi)=\kappa_{d}(\lambda) by Calculus of Laws of Square-Integrable Tuples: Bounded Tuples, the Lipschitz Bound, Moments, Affine Push-Forwards, Couplings and Embeddings §push-forward and The Discounted Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman Equation with Free Langevin Noise in a Wall on Noncommutative Laws: Standing Notation §pairings.

Transport of the score. Let λ∈DΞ\lambda\in\mathcal{D}_{\Xi}, let ϖ\varpi be a bounded plan at λ\lambda, and let X,P,QX,P,Q be L2L^{2} dd-tuples of a tracial W*-probability space (H,M,Ω)(H,M,\Omega) with law(X,P)=κ2d(ϖ)\mathrm{law}(X,P)=\kappa_{2d}(\varpi) and law(X,Q)=πλΞ\mathrm{law}(X,Q)=\pi^{\Xi}_{\lambda}, the score plan. Then λ∈D⊆Σd,R\lambda\in\mathcal{D}\subseteq\Sigma_{d,R}, as DΞ⊆D\mathcal{D}_{\Xi}\subseteq\mathcal{D} (The Wall-Confined Free Energy and Its Score §score), and law(X)=κd(λ)\mathrm{law}(X)=\kappa_{d}(\lambda) (bounded realisations), and πλΞ=law(Xλ,Ξ(λ))\pi^{\Xi}_{\lambda}=\mathrm{law}(X_{\lambda},\Xi(\lambda)), where XλX_{\lambda}, the tuple of classes of the variables in Hλ\mathcal{H}_{\lambda} (The Score Plan of a Law in the Score Domain of the Wall-Confined Free Energy), is the tuple XλX_{\lambda} of Realising a Square-Integrable Field of the GNS Space of a Bounded Law next to Its Positions: Uniqueness and the Joint Law with a Momentum, and Ξ(λ)\Xi(\lambda) is an L2L^{2} dd-tuple of (Hλ,Mλ,Ωλ)(\mathcal{H}_{\lambda},\mathcal{M}_{\lambda},\Omega_{\lambda}). Hence Realising a Square-Integrable Field of the GNS Space of a Bounded Law next to Its Positions: Uniqueness and the Joint Law with a Momentum, with r=Rr=R, this λ\lambda, ζ=Ξ(λ)\zeta=\Xi(\lambda), the bounded plan ϖ\varpi and the tuples X,P,QX,P,Q, gives: law(X,P+tQ)=ϖ⊕t Ξ(λ)\mathrm{law}(X,P+tQ)=\varpi\oplus t\,\Xi(\lambda) for every real tt (Realising a Square-Integrable Field of the GNS Space of a Bounded Law next to Its Positions: Uniqueness and the Joint Law with a Momentum §shift), so that HM(X,P+tQ)=H(ϖ⊕t Ξ(λ))\mathcal{H}_{M}(X,P+tQ)=\mathcal{H}(\varpi\oplus t\,\Xi(\lambda)) by Lifts of Functions on Square-Integrable Noncommutative Laws to Square-Integrable Tuples §lift; ⟨Q,P⟩2=J(Ξ(λ),ϖ)\langle Q,P\rangle_{2}=\mathcal{J}(\Xi(\lambda),\varpi) (Realising a Square-Integrable Field of the GNS Space of a Bounded Law next to Its Positions: Uniqueness and the Joint Law with a Momentum §pairing); and ∥Q∥2=∥Ξ(λ)∥2\lVert Q\rVert_{2}=\lVert\Xi(\lambda)\rVert_{2} (Realising a Square-Integrable Field of the GNS Space of a Bounded Law next to Its Positions: Uniqueness and the Joint Law with a Momentum §norm).

Step 0 (the constant δ1\delta_{1} and the order of choices). By Shift Semicontinuity of a Hamiltonian on Phase-Space Noncommutative Laws §upper with r=Rr=R fix δu>0\delta_{\mathrm{u}}>0 as there, and by Score Bounds at Envelope Test Inequalities from the Absorption Slack with r=Rr=R (its hypotheses, absorption of shifts and boundedness at zero momentum, are assumed) fix δs>0\delta_{\mathrm{s}}>0 as there. Put δ1=min⁡{δu,δs}>0\delta_{1}=\min\{\delta_{\mathrm{u}},\delta_{\mathrm{s}}\}>0. Let 0<δ0≤δ10<\delta_{0}\le\delta_{1}, and let gg, ww be as in the statement, with ww not an envelope supersolution with shift range δ0\delta_{0}. Fix a real b≥0b\ge0 with ∣w∣≤b|w|\le b and ∣g∣≤b|g|\le b, and, by The Wall-Confined Free Energy: Norm Bound, Lower Bound, Weak-Star Compact Sublevel Sets and Displacement Monotonicity of the Score §bounds, a real ee with e≤E(λ)e\le\mathcal{E}(\lambda) for all λ∈D\lambda\in\mathcal{D}. The remaining objects are chosen in this order: δ,φ,μ,π\delta,\varphi,\mu,\pi, then β\beta and rgr_{g} (Step 1); aPa_{P}, r1r_{1}, mm, hh, θ\theta and Φ\Phi (Step 2); r3r_{3} and ε3\varepsilon_{3} (Step 3); rΦr_{\Phi}, r2r_{2}, ε\varepsilon and UU (Step 4). In Step 5 the test data are arbitrary.

Envelope facts. For a bounded v:Σd2→Rv:\Sigma^{2}_{d}\to\mathbb{R} and real δ′′>0\delta''>0: v∘κd−δ′′Ev\circ\kappa_{d}-\delta''\mathcal{E} is bounded above and v∘κd+δ′′Ev\circ\kappa_{d}+\delta''\mathcal{E} bounded below near each point (The Penalty Envelopes of a Bounded Function on the Domain of the Wall-Confined Free Energy §upper, The Penalty Envelopes of a Bounded Function on the Domain of the Wall-Confined Free Energy §lower); v(κd(λ))−δ′′E(λ)≤vδ′′−(λ)v(\kappa_{d}(\lambda))-\delta''\mathcal{E}(\lambda)\le v^{-}_{\delta''}(\lambda) and vδ′′+(λ)≤v(κd(λ))+δ′′E(λ)v^{+}_{\delta''}(\lambda)\le v(\kappa_{d}(\lambda))+\delta''\mathcal{E}(\lambda) for λ∈D\lambda\in\mathcal{D} (Properties of the Upper Semicontinuous Envelope §bounds, Properties of the Lower Semicontinuous Envelope, by Duality §bounds); and vδ′′+v^{+}_{\delta''} is lower semicontinuous on D\mathcal{D} (Properties of the Lower Semicontinuous Envelope, by Duality §lsc).

Step 1 (the failure and the gap). Negating Envelope Viscosity Subsolutions, Supersolutions and Solutions of the Discounted HJB Equation with Free Langevin Noise in a Wall §super for ww, fix a real δ\delta with 0<δ≤δ00<\delta\le\delta_{0}, a function φ:Σd2→R\varphi:\Sigma^{2}_{d}\to\mathbb{R}, μ∈D\mu\in\mathcal{D} with wδ+(λ)−φ(κd(λ))>wδ+(μ)−φ(κd(μ))w^{+}_{\delta}(\lambda)-\varphi(\kappa_{d}(\lambda))>w^{+}_{\delta}(\mu)-\varphi(\kappa_{d}(\mu)) for every λ∈D\lambda\in\mathcal{D} with λ≠μ\lambda\ne\mu, and a bounded plan π\pi at μ\mu with κ2d(π)∈J−φ(κd(μ))\kappa_{2d}(\pi)\in J^{-}\varphi(\kappa_{d}(\mu)), such that either μ∉DΞ\mu\notin\mathcal{D}_{\Xi}, or μ∈DΞ\mu\in\mathcal{D}_{\Xi} and

F:=ρ(wδ+(μ)−δ E(μ))+H(π⊕(−δ) Ξ(μ))+σ22(J(Ξ(μ),π)−δ ∥Ξ(μ)∥22)<0.(F)F:=\rho\bigl(w^{+}_{\delta}(\mu)-\delta\,\mathcal{E}(\mu)\bigr)+\mathcal{H}\bigl(\pi\oplus(-\delta)\,\Xi(\mu)\bigr)+\frac{\sigma^{2}}{2}\Bigl(\mathcal{J}\bigl(\Xi(\mu),\pi\bigr)-\delta\,\lVert\Xi(\mu)\rVert_{2}^{2}\Bigr)<0.\tag{F}

Since w≤gw\le g, w∘κd+δE≤g∘κd+δEw\circ\kappa_{d}+\delta\mathcal{E}\le g\circ\kappa_{d}+\delta\mathcal{E} on D\mathcal{D}, so wδ+≤gδ+w^{+}_{\delta}\le g^{+}_{\delta} by Properties of the Lower Semicontinuous Envelope, by Duality §monotone. Suppose gδ+(μ)=wδ+(μ)g^{+}_{\delta}(\mu)=w^{+}_{\delta}(\mu). Then for λ∈D\lambda\in\mathcal{D}, λ≠μ\lambda\ne\mu, we get gδ+(λ)−φ(κd(λ))≥wδ+(λ)−φ(κd(λ))>gδ+(μ)−φ(κd(μ))g^{+}_{\delta}(\lambda)-\varphi(\kappa_{d}(\lambda))\ge w^{+}_{\delta}(\lambda)-\varphi(\kappa_{d}(\lambda))>g^{+}_{\delta}(\mu)-\varphi(\kappa_{d}(\mu)), and since gg is a supersolution with shift range δ0≥δ\delta_{0}\ge\delta, Envelope Viscosity Subsolutions, Supersolutions and Solutions of the Discounted HJB Equation with Free Langevin Noise in a Wall §super gives μ∈DΞ\mu\in\mathcal{D}_{\Xi} and that the left side of (F), in which wδ+(μ)=gδ+(μ)w^{+}_{\delta}(\mu)=g^{+}_{\delta}(\mu), is nonnegative; this contradicts the choice of the failure. Hence β=12(gδ+(μ)−wδ+(μ))>0\beta=\frac12\bigl(g^{+}_{\delta}(\mu)-w^{+}_{\delta}(\mu)\bigr)>0, and by lower semicontinuity of gδ+g^{+}_{\delta} (Lower Semicontinuous Function on a Subset of a Metric Space) fix rg>0r_{g}>0 with

gδ+(λ)>wδ+(μ)+βfor every λ∈D with W2(λ,μ)<rg.(G)g^{+}_{\delta}(\lambda)>w^{+}_{\delta}(\mu)+\beta\qquad\text{for every }\lambda\in\mathcal{D}\text{ with }W_{2}(\lambda,\mu)<r_{g}.\tag{G}

Step 2 (gauge and test function). Let aP=∣π∣moma_{P}=|\pi|_{\mathrm{mom}}. If (X,P)(X,P) is any realisation of κ2d(π)\kappa_{2d}(\pi), then ∥P∥2=aP\lVert P\rVert_{2}=a_{P} and law(X)=κd(μ)\mathrm{law}(X)=\kappa_{d}(\mu): with the bounded realisation (X,P)=(z,z′)Ω(X,P)=(z,z')\Omega, λ(z,z′)=π\lambda_{(z,z')}=\pi, Laws of Self-Adjoint Tuples in a Tracial W*-Probability Space: Moments, Affine Images, Couplings, Embeddings and L^2 Approximation §moments gives ∥P∥22=∑jπ(xd+jxd+j)=aP2\lVert P\rVert_{2}^{2}=\sum_{j}\pi(x_{d+j}x_{d+j})=a_{P}^{2} (Marginal Isometries, Bounded Plans and Displacement Pairings for Noncommutative Laws §plans), and the second assertion is a convention above. BB and CC are the affine data of Couplings of a Square-Integrable Plan with a Law: Displacement and Momentum Pairing, the couplings Cκ2d(π)(⋅)\mathcal{C}_{\kappa_{2d}(\pi)}(\cdot) are those of Couplings of a Square-Integrable Plan with a Law: Displacement and Momentum Pairing §couplings, and the displacement s(γ)s(\gamma) and momentum pairing p(γ)p(\gamma) are those of Couplings of a Square-Integrable Plan with a Law: Displacement and Momentum Pairing §displacement-pairing; for a realisation (X,P,X′)(X,P,X') of γ∈Σ3d2\gamma\in\Sigma^{2}_{3d} one has law(X,P)=B#γ\mathrm{law}(X,P)=B_{\#}\gamma and law(X′)=C#γ\mathrm{law}(X')=C_{\#}\gamma by Calculus of Laws of Square-Integrable Tuples: Bounded Tuples, the Lipschitz Bound, Moments, Affine Push-Forwards, Couplings and Embeddings §push-forward.

The modulus. For γ∈Σ3d2\gamma\in\Sigma^{2}_{3d} with B#γ=κ2d(π)B_{\#}\gamma=\kappa_{2d}(\pi) put v(γ)=φ(κd(μ))+p(γ)−φ(C#γ)v(\gamma)=\varphi(\kappa_{d}(\mu))+p(\gamma)-\varphi(C_{\#}\gamma). For real η>0\eta>0 let rη>0r_{\eta}>0 be as in Plan Superdifferentials, Plan Subdifferentials and Plan Jets with Slack on Square-Integrable Noncommutative Laws §sub for φ\varphi, κ2d(π)\kappa_{2d}(\pi) and η\eta; applying that inequality to a realisation of γ\gamma (the lift of φ\varphi being evaluated through Lifts of Functions on Square-Integrable Noncommutative Laws to Square-Integrable Tuples §lift) gives v(γ)≤η s(γ)v(\gamma)\le\eta\,s(\gamma) whenever s(γ)<rηs(\gamma)<r_{\eta}. Let r1=r1∘/2r_{1}=r_{1}^{\circ}/2, where r1∘=rηr_{1}^{\circ}=r_{\eta} for η=1\eta=1. For s∈[0,r1]s\in[0,r_{1}] let m(s)m(s) be the least upper bound (The Real Numbers: Standing Notation and Background §bounds) of the set consisting of 00 and of the numbers v(γ)v(\gamma) with B#γ=κ2d(π)B_{\#}\gamma=\kappa_{2d}(\pi) and s(γ)≤ss(\gamma)\le s; this set is bounded above by ss, so 0≤m(s)≤s≤r10\le m(s)\le s\le r_{1}. Thus m(0)=0m(0)=0, mm is bounded by r1r_{1}, and for η>0\eta>0 one has 2m(s)≤ηs2m(s)\le\eta s whenever s<rη/2s<r_{\eta/2}. By A Nondecreasing Differentiable Majorant with Vanishing Derivative at Zero for a Little-o Modulus, applied to 2m2m on [0,r1][0,r_{1}], fix h:[0,∞)→[0,∞)h:[0,\infty)\to[0,\infty) as there, and KhK_{h} the bound of A Nondecreasing Differentiable Majorant with Vanishing Derivative at Zero for a Little-o Modulus §derivative. Then hh is nondecreasing with h(0)=0h(0)=0 (A Nondecreasing Differentiable Majorant with Vanishing Derivative at Zero for a Little-o Modulus §monotone), h(s)≥2m(s)h(s)\ge2m(s) for s∈[0,r1]s\in[0,r_{1}] (A Nondecreasing Differentiable Majorant with Vanishing Derivative at Zero for a Little-o Modulus §majorant), ∣h′∣≤Kh|h'|\le K_{h}, h′(0)=0h'(0)=0 and h′(s)→0h'(s)\to0 as s→0s\to0 (A Nondecreasing Differentiable Majorant with Vanishing Derivative at Zero for a Little-o Modulus §derivative); and since hˉ\bar{h} is differentiable at every s≥0s\ge0 with hˉ=h\bar{h}=h on [0,∞)[0,\infty) (A Nondecreasing Differentiable Majorant with Vanishing Derivative at Zero for a Little-o Modulus §differentiable), the definition of the derivative (Single-Variable Calculus on an Interval §derivative) gives, for s≥0s\ge0 and η>0\eta>0, a real r>0r>0 with ∣h(t)−h(s)−h′(s)(t−s)∣≤η∣t−s∣|h(t)-h(s)-h'(s)(t-s)|\le\eta|t-s| for all real t≥0t\ge0 with ∣t−s∣<r|t-s|<r. So hh satisfies the gauge hypotheses of The Coupling Test Function of a Bounded Plan: Maximising Couplings, Continuity, Plan Subjets and Localisation with L=KhL=K_{h}.

The weight and Φ\Phi. Put

θ=max⁡{1, 2aPr1, 2(2b+δ(E(μ)−e)+2)r12},\theta=\max\Bigl\{1,\ \frac{2a_{P}}{r_{1}},\ \frac{2\bigl(2b+\delta(\mathcal{E}(\mu)-e)+2\bigr)}{r_{1}^{2}}\Bigr\},

so θ>0\theta>0, θr1≥2aP\theta r_{1}\ge2a_{P} and θr12/2≥2b+δ(E(μ)−e)+2\theta r_{1}^{2}/2\ge2b+\delta(\mathcal{E}(\mu)-e)+2. Let Φ=Φκ2d(π)h,θ\Phi=\Phi^{h,\theta}_{\kappa_{2d}(\pi)} be the coupling test function; The Coupling Test Function of a Bounded Plan: Maximising Couplings, Continuity, Plan Subjets and Localisation applies with r=Rr=R, μ∈Σd,R\mu\in\Sigma_{d,R}, π\pi, θ\theta, L=KhL=K_{h} and hh, and "maximising coupling" refers to it.

(2a) Localisation hypothesis. If γ∈Cκ2d(π)(κd(μ))\gamma\in\mathcal{C}_{\kappa_{2d}(\pi)}(\kappa_{d}(\mu)) and s(γ)<r1s(\gamma)<r_{1}, then C#γ=κd(μ)C_{\#}\gamma=\kappa_{d}(\mu), so p(γ)=v(γ)≤m(s(γ))≤12h(s(γ))p(\gamma)=v(\gamma)\le m(s(\gamma))\le\frac12h(s(\gamma)). Thus the hypothesis of The Coupling Test Function of a Bounded Plan: Maximising Couplings, Continuity, Plan Subjets and Localisation §localisation and The Coupling Test Function of a Bounded Plan: Maximising Couplings, Continuity, Plan Subjets and Localisation §convergence holds with r0=r1r_{0}=r_{1}, and Φ(κd(μ))=0\Phi(\kappa_{d}(\mu))=0 by The Coupling Test Function of a Bounded Plan: Maximising Couplings, Continuity, Plan Subjets and Localisation §localisation.

(2b) Upper bound. For ζ∈Σd2\zeta\in\Sigma^{2}_{d} and γ∈Cκ2d(π)(ζ)\gamma\in\mathcal{C}_{\kappa_{2d}(\pi)}(\zeta) with s=s(γ)s=s(\gamma), Cauchy--Schwarz gives p(γ)≤aPsp(\gamma)\le a_{P}s, so, as h≥0h\ge0, p(γ)−h(s)−θs2≤aPs−θs2=aP24θ−θ(s−aP2θ)2≤aP24θp(\gamma)-h(s)-\theta s^{2}\le a_{P}s-\theta s^{2}=\frac{a_{P}^{2}}{4\theta}-\theta\bigl(s-\frac{a_{P}}{2\theta}\bigr)^{2}\le\frac{a_{P}^{2}}{4\theta}. Hence Φ(ζ)≤aP2/(4θ)\Phi(\zeta)\le a_{P}^{2}/(4\theta).

(2c) The bump functions. For real ε>0\varepsilon>0 define ψε:D→R\psi_{\varepsilon}:\mathcal{D}\to\mathbb{R} by ψε(λ)=wδ+(μ)+ε−δ E(λ)+Φ(κd(λ))\psi_{\varepsilon}(\lambda)=w^{+}_{\delta}(\mu)+\varepsilon-\delta\,\mathcal{E}(\lambda)+\Phi(\kappa_{d}(\lambda)). By (2b) and e≤Ee\le\mathcal{E}, for 0<ε≤10<\varepsilon\le1,

ψε(λ)≤bψ:=wδ+(μ)+1−δe+aP24θ(λ∈D).(B)\psi_{\varepsilon}(\lambda)\le b_{\psi}:=w^{+}_{\delta}(\mu)+1-\delta e+\frac{a_{P}^{2}}{4\theta}\qquad(\lambda\in\mathcal{D}).\tag{B}

We claim that for every ε>0\varepsilon>0 and λ∈D\lambda\in\mathcal{D}

ψε(λ)≤w(κd(λ))+ε−min⁡{θ W2(λ,μ)2,1}.(K)\psi_{\varepsilon}(\lambda)\le w(\kappa_{d}(\lambda))+\varepsilon-\min\bigl\{\theta\,W_{2}(\lambda,\mu)^{2},1\bigr\}.\tag{K}

By The Coupling Test Function of a Bounded Plan: Maximising Couplings, Continuity, Plan Subjets and Localisation §attained fix a maximising coupling γ\gamma for λ\lambda and put s=s(γ)s=s(\gamma). For a realisation (X,P,X′)(X,P,X') of γ\gamma, law(X)=κd(μ)\mathrm{law}(X)=\kappa_{d}(\mu) and law(X′)=κd(λ)\mathrm{law}(X')=\kappa_{d}(\lambda), so s=∥X′−X∥2≥W2(λ,μ)s=\lVert X'-X\rVert_{2}\ge W_{2}(\lambda,\mu) by Calculus of Laws of Square-Integrable Tuples: Bounded Tuples, the Lipschitz Bound, Moments, Affine Push-Forwards, Couplings and Embeddings §lipschitz and the isometry. If s≤r1s\le r_{1}: v(γ)v(\gamma) belongs to the set defining m(s)m(s), so p(γ)≤m(s)+φ(κd(λ))−φ(κd(μ))p(\gamma)\le m(s)+\varphi(\kappa_{d}(\lambda))-\varphi(\kappa_{d}(\mu)), and as h(s)≥2m(s)≥m(s)h(s)\ge2m(s)\ge m(s), Φ(κd(λ))≤φ(κd(λ))−φ(κd(μ))−θs2\Phi(\kappa_{d}(\lambda))\le\varphi(\kappa_{d}(\lambda))-\varphi(\kappa_{d}(\mu))-\theta s^{2}. The minimum property of μ\mu (with equality allowed at λ=μ\lambda=\mu) and the envelope facts give φ(κd(λ))−φ(κd(μ))≤wδ+(λ)−wδ+(μ)≤w(κd(λ))+δE(λ)−wδ+(μ)\varphi(\kappa_{d}(\lambda))-\varphi(\kappa_{d}(\mu))\le w^{+}_{\delta}(\lambda)-w^{+}_{\delta}(\mu)\le w(\kappa_{d}(\lambda))+\delta\mathcal{E}(\lambda)-w^{+}_{\delta}(\mu); hence ψε(λ)≤w(κd(λ))+ε−θs2≤w(κd(λ))+ε−θW2(λ,μ)2\psi_{\varepsilon}(\lambda)\le w(\kappa_{d}(\lambda))+\varepsilon-\theta s^{2}\le w(\kappa_{d}(\lambda))+\varepsilon-\theta W_{2}(\lambda,\mu)^{2}. If s>r1s>r_{1}: aP≤θr1/2<θs/2a_{P}\le\theta r_{1}/2<\theta s/2, so Φ(κd(λ))≤aPs−θs2<−θs2/2<−θr12/2≤−(2b+δ(E(μ)−e)+2)\Phi(\kappa_{d}(\lambda))\le a_{P}s-\theta s^{2}<-\theta s^{2}/2<-\theta r_{1}^{2}/2\le-(2b+\delta(\mathcal{E}(\mu)-e)+2); with wδ+(μ)≤w(κd(μ))+δE(μ)≤b+δE(μ)w^{+}_{\delta}(\mu)\le w(\kappa_{d}(\mu))+\delta\mathcal{E}(\mu)\le b+\delta\mathcal{E}(\mu), −δE(λ)≤−δe-\delta\mathcal{E}(\lambda)\le-\delta e and −b≤w(κd(λ))-b\le w(\kappa_{d}(\lambda)) this gives ψε(λ)<−b+ε−2≤w(κd(λ))+ε−1\psi_{\varepsilon}(\lambda)<-b+\varepsilon-2\le w(\kappa_{d}(\lambda))+\varepsilon-1. In both cases (K) holds.

Step 3 (the test inequality near μ\mu). For ν∈D\nu\in\mathcal{D} and a maximising coupling γ\gamma for ν\nu, a score quadruple for (ν,γ)(\nu,\gamma) is a quadruple (X,P,X′,Q)(X,P,X',Q) of L2L^{2} dd-tuples of one tracial W*-probability space with law(X,P,X′)=γ\mathrm{law}(X,P,X')=\gamma, ν∈DΞ\nu\in\mathcal{D}_{\Xi} and law(X′,Q)=πνΞ\mathrm{law}(X',Q)=\pi^{\Xi}_{\nu}. With SS formed from X,P,X′X,P,X' as in The Coupling Test Function of a Bounded Plan: Maximising Couplings, Continuity, Plan Subjets and Localisation §subjet and Gδ−G^{-}_{\delta} as in Shift Semicontinuity of a Hamiltonian on Phase-Space Noncommutative Laws, put, for ε>0\varepsilon>0,

Λε=ρ ψε(ν)+Gδ−(X′,S,Q)+σ22⟨Q,S⟩2=ρ ψε(ν)+HM(X′,S−δQ)+σ22(⟨Q,S⟩2−δ∥Q∥22).\Lambda_{\varepsilon}=\rho\,\psi_{\varepsilon}(\nu)+G^{-}_{\delta}(X',S,Q)+\frac{\sigma^{2}}{2}\langle Q,S\rangle_{2}=\rho\,\psi_{\varepsilon}(\nu)+\mathcal{H}_{M}(X',S-\delta Q)+\frac{\sigma^{2}}{2}\bigl(\langle Q,S\rangle_{2}-\delta\lVert Q\rVert_{2}^{2}\bigr).

Since SS and S−δQS-\delta Q are real affine combinations of X,P,X′,QX,P,X',Q with coefficients fixed by s(γ)s(\gamma), Λε\Lambda_{\varepsilon} depends only on law(X,P,X′,Q)\mathrm{law}(X,P,X',Q), by law invariance. Claim: there are reals r3>0r_{3}>0 and ε3∈(0,1]\varepsilon_{3}\in(0,1] such that Λε≤0\Lambda_{\varepsilon}\le0 for every ε∈(0,ε3]\varepsilon\in(0,\varepsilon_{3}], every ν∈DΞ\nu\in\mathcal{D}_{\Xi} with W2(ν,μ)<r3W_{2}(\nu,\mu)<r_{3}, every maximising coupling γ\gamma for ν\nu and every score quadruple for (ν,γ)(\nu,\gamma).

Suppose not. Then for every n∈Nn\in\mathbb{N} (taking r3=ε3=1/nr_{3}=\varepsilon_{3}=1/n) there are εn∈(0,1/n]\varepsilon_{n}\in(0,1/n], νn∈DΞ\nu_{n}\in\mathcal{D}_{\Xi} with W2(νn,μ)<1/nW_{2}(\nu_{n},\mu)<1/n, a maximising coupling γn\gamma_{n} for νn\nu_{n} and a score quadruple (Xn,Pn,Xn′,Qn)(X_{n},P_{n},X'_{n},Q_{n}) for (νn,γn)(\nu_{n},\gamma_{n}) with Λn>0\Lambda_{n}>0, where Λn\Lambda_{n} is Λεn\Lambda_{\varepsilon_{n}} for these data.

(3a) One space. Let γ^n=law(Xn,Pn,Xn′,Qn)∈Σ4d2\hat{\gamma}_{n}=\mathrm{law}(X_{n},P_{n},X'_{n},Q_{n})\in\Sigma^{2}_{4d}; its push-forward to the first 2d2d variables is law(Xn,Pn)=B#γn=κ2d(π)\mathrm{law}(X_{n},P_{n})=B_{\#}\gamma_{n}=\kappa_{2d}(\pi). By Gluing Countably Many Square-Integrable Noncommutative Laws along a Common Marginal §glue, with k=2dk=2d, mn=2dm_{n}=2d and common marginal κ2d(π)\kappa_{2d}(\pi), fix a tracial W*-probability space (H,M,Ω)(H,M,\Omega), an L2L^{2} 2d2d-tuple (X,P)(X,P) and L2L^{2} 2d2d-tuples (Xn′,Qn)(X'_{n},Q_{n}) of it (we reuse the names) with law(X,P,Xn′,Qn)=γ^n\mathrm{law}(X,P,X'_{n},Q_{n})=\hat{\gamma}_{n} for every nn. By law invariance, (X,P,Xn′,Qn)(X,P,X'_{n},Q_{n}) is a score quadruple for (νn,γn)(\nu_{n},\gamma_{n}) with the same value Λn>0\Lambda_{n}>0; let SnS_{n} be formed from X,P,Xn′X,P,X'_{n}. Also law(X,P)=κ2d(π)\mathrm{law}(X,P)=\kappa_{2d}(\pi), so ∥P∥2=aP\lVert P\rVert_{2}=a_{P} and law(X)=κd(μ)\mathrm{law}(X)=\kappa_{d}(\mu) (Step 2), and s(γn)=∥Xn′−X∥2s(\gamma_{n})=\lVert X'_{n}-X\rVert_{2}.

(3b) Convergence. As νn∈Σd,R\nu_{n}\in\Sigma_{d,R}, W2(νn,μ)→0W_{2}(\nu_{n},\mu)\to0 and (2a) holds, The Coupling Test Function of a Bounded Plan: Maximising Couplings, Continuity, Plan Subjets and Localisation §convergence gives s(γn)→0s(\gamma_{n})\to0, Φ(κd(νn))→0\Phi(\kappa_{d}(\nu_{n}))\to0 and ∥Sn−P∥2→0\lVert S_{n}-P\rVert_{2}\to0. Fix N0N_{0} with ∥Sn−P∥2≤1\lVert S_{n}-P\rVert_{2}\le1, hence ∥Sn∥2≤aP+1\lVert S_{n}\rVert_{2}\le a_{P}+1, for n≥N0n\ge N_{0}.

(3c) Score bound. Let Cs≥0C_{\mathrm{s}}\ge0 be the constant (called CC there) of Score Bounds at Envelope Test Inequalities from the Absorption Slack for r=Rr=R, the level δs\delta_{\mathrm{s}} of Step 0, and ms=aP+1m_{\mathrm{s}}=a_{P}+1 and bs=∣bψ∣b_{\mathrm{s}}=|b_{\psi}| in the roles of its mm and bb. For n≥N0n\ge N_{0}, (B) and εn≤1\varepsilon_{n}\le1 give ρ ψεn(νn)≤ρ bψ\rho\,\psi_{\varepsilon_{n}}(\nu_{n})\le\rho\,b_{\psi}, so Λn>0\Lambda_{n}>0 yields

ρ bψ+HM(Xn′,Sn−δQn)+σ22(⟨Qn,Sn⟩2−δ∥Qn∥22)≥0.\rho\,b_{\psi}+\mathcal{H}_{M}(X'_{n},S_{n}-\delta Q_{n})+\frac{\sigma^{2}}{2}\bigl(\langle Q_{n},S_{n}\rangle_{2}-\delta\lVert Q_{n}\rVert_{2}^{2}\bigr)\ge0.

Since law(Xn′)=κd(νn)∈κd(Σd,R)\mathrm{law}(X'_{n})=\kappa_{d}(\nu_{n})\in\kappa_{d}(\Sigma_{d,R}) and 0<δ≤δ0≤δs0<\delta\le\delta_{0}\le\delta_{\mathrm{s}}, Score Bounds at Envelope Test Inequalities from the Absorption Slack §super, with Xn′,Sn,QnX'_{n},S_{n},Q_{n} and a=bψa=b_{\psi}, gives ∥Qn∥2≤Cs/δ\lVert Q_{n}\rVert_{2}\le C_{\mathrm{s}}/\delta; and ∥Ξ(νn)∥2=∥Qn∥2\lVert\Xi(\nu_{n})\rVert_{2}=\lVert Q_{n}\rVert_{2} by law invariance, as law(Xn′,Qn)=πνnΞ=law(Xνn,Ξ(νn))\mathrm{law}(X'_{n},Q_{n})=\pi^{\Xi}_{\nu_{n}}=\mathrm{law}(X_{\nu_{n}},\Xi(\nu_{n})). Replacing all sequences by their tails from N0N_{0} on, we assume these bounds for every nn.

(3d) Limits. By The Wall-Confined Free Energy Converges along Wasserstein-Convergent Sequences with Bounded Scores §convergence, E(νn)→E(μ)\mathcal{E}(\nu_{n})\to\mathcal{E}(\mu); with εn→0\varepsilon_{n}\to0 and (3b), ψεn(νn)→wδ+(μ)−δE(μ)\psi_{\varepsilon_{n}}(\nu_{n})\to w^{+}_{\delta}(\mu)-\delta\mathcal{E}(\mu). As E\mathcal{E} has closed score, Wall-Confined Free Energies with Closed Score §closed, applied in (H,M,Ω)(H,M,\Omega) to (νn)(\nu_{n}), μ∈D\mu\in\mathcal{D}, Xn′,QnX'_{n},Q_{n} and XX (note ∥Xn′−X∥2=s(γn)→0\lVert X'_{n}-X\rVert_{2}=s(\gamma_{n})\to0 and ∥Qn∥2≤Cs/δ\lVert Q_{n}\rVert_{2}\le C_{\mathrm{s}}/\delta), gives μ∈DΞ\mu\in\mathcal{D}_{\Xi} and an L2L^{2} dd-tuple QQ with law(X,Q)=πμΞ\mathrm{law}(X,Q)=\pi^{\Xi}_{\mu} and ⟨Qn,Y⟩2→⟨Q,Y⟩2\langle Q_{n},Y\rangle_{2}\to\langle Q,Y\rangle_{2} for every L2L^{2} dd-tuple YY. Since μ∈DΞ\mu\in\mathcal{D}_{\Xi}, Step 1 gives (F): F<0F<0. Put ε′=−F/4>0\varepsilon'=-F/4>0.

(3e) Upper shift semicontinuity. (Xn′,Sn,Qn)→(X,P,Q)(X'_{n},S_{n},Q_{n})\to(X,P,Q) is a shift-convergent sequence at radius RR in the sense of Shift-Convergent Sequences of Positions, Momenta and Shifts in a Tracial W*-Probability Space §sequence: law(Xn′)=κd(νn)\mathrm{law}(X'_{n})=\kappa_{d}(\nu_{n}) and law(X)=κd(μ)\mathrm{law}(X)=\kappa_{d}(\mu) lie in κd(Σd,R)\kappa_{d}(\Sigma_{d,R}) and ∥Xn′−X∥2→0\lVert X'_{n}-X\rVert_{2}\to0; ∥Sn−P∥2→0\lVert S_{n}-P\rVert_{2}\to0; and ∥Qn∥2≤Cs/δ\lVert Q_{n}\rVert_{2}\le C_{\mathrm{s}}/\delta with the weak convergence of (3d). As 0<δ≤δu0<\delta\le\delta_{\mathrm{u}}, Shift Semicontinuity of a Hamiltonian on Phase-Space Noncommutative Laws §upper gives N1N_{1} with Gδ−(Xn′,Sn,Qn)≤Gδ−(X,P,Q)+ε′G^{-}_{\delta}(X'_{n},S_{n},Q_{n})\le G^{-}_{\delta}(X,P,Q)+\varepsilon' for n≥N1n\ge N_{1}. Moreover ∣⟨Qn,Sn⟩2−⟨Q,P⟩2∣≤Csδ∥Sn−P∥2+∣⟨Qn,P⟩2−⟨Q,P⟩2∣→0|\langle Q_{n},S_{n}\rangle_{2}-\langle Q,P\rangle_{2}|\le\frac{C_{\mathrm{s}}}{\delta}\lVert S_{n}-P\rVert_{2}+|\langle Q_{n},P\rangle_{2}-\langle Q,P\rangle_{2}|\to0.

(3f) Identification. The transport of the score (Realising a Square-Integrable Field of the GNS Space of a Bounded Law next to Its Positions: Uniqueness and the Joint Law with a Momentum §shift, Realising a Square-Integrable Field of the GNS Space of a Bounded Law next to Its Positions: Uniqueness and the Joint Law with a Momentum §pairing, Realising a Square-Integrable Field of the GNS Space of a Bounded Law next to Its Positions: Uniqueness and the Joint Law with a Momentum §norm), with λ=μ\lambda=\mu, ϖ=π\varpi=\pi, the tuples X,P,QX,P,Q and t=−δt=-\delta (so that P+tQ=P−δQP+tQ=P-\delta Q), gives HM(X,P−δQ)=H(π⊕(−δ) Ξ(μ))\mathcal{H}_{M}(X,P-\delta Q)=\mathcal{H}(\pi\oplus(-\delta)\,\Xi(\mu)), ⟨Q,P⟩2=J(Ξ(μ),π)\langle Q,P\rangle_{2}=\mathcal{J}(\Xi(\mu),\pi) and ∥Q∥2=∥Ξ(μ)∥2\lVert Q\rVert_{2}=\lVert\Xi(\mu)\rVert_{2}. Hence

ρ(wδ+(μ)−δE(μ))+Gδ−(X,P,Q)+σ22⟨Q,P⟩2=F.\rho\bigl(w^{+}_{\delta}(\mu)-\delta\mathcal{E}(\mu)\bigr)+G^{-}_{\delta}(X,P,Q)+\frac{\sigma^{2}}{2}\langle Q,P\rangle_{2}=F.

(3g) Contradiction. Fix N2N_{2} such that for n≥N2n\ge N_{2} the numbers ρ ψεn(νn)\rho\,\psi_{\varepsilon_{n}}(\nu_{n}) and σ22⟨Qn,Sn⟩2\frac{\sigma^{2}}{2}\langle Q_{n},S_{n}\rangle_{2} are within ε′\varepsilon' of ρ(wδ+(μ)−δE(μ))\rho(w^{+}_{\delta}(\mu)-\delta\mathcal{E}(\mu)) and σ22⟨Q,P⟩2\frac{\sigma^{2}}{2}\langle Q,P\rangle_{2} respectively. For n≥max⁡{N1,N2}n\ge\max\{N_{1},N_{2}\}, (3e) and (3f) give Λn<F+3ε′=F/4<0\Lambda_{n}<F+3\varepsilon'=F/4<0, contradicting Λn>0\Lambda_{n}>0. This proves the claim; fix r3r_{3} and ε3\varepsilon_{3}.

Step 4 (the bump). By The Coupling Test Function of a Bounded Plan: Maximising Couplings, Continuity, Plan Subjets and Localisation §continuity and (2a) fix rΦ>0r_{\Phi}>0 with ∣Φ(κd(λ))∣<β/2|\Phi(\kappa_{d}(\lambda))|<\beta/2 for every λ∈Σd,R\lambda\in\Sigma_{d,R} with W2(λ,μ)<rΦW_{2}(\lambda,\mu)<r_{\Phi}. Put

r2=min⁡{rg,rΦ,r3},ε=min⁡{ε3, β4, θr228, 12},ψ=ψε.r_{2}=\min\{r_{g},r_{\Phi},r_{3}\},\qquad\varepsilon=\min\Bigl\{\varepsilon_{3},\ \frac{\beta}{4},\ \frac{\theta r_{2}^{2}}{8},\ \frac12\Bigr\},\qquad\psi=\psi_{\varepsilon}.

Define U:Σd2→RU:\Sigma^{2}_{d}\to\mathbb{R} as follows: if ζ=κd(λ)\zeta=\kappa_{d}(\lambda) for some λ∈D\lambda\in\mathcal{D} (unique by injectivity of κd\kappa_{d}), let U(ζ)=max⁡{w(ζ),ψ(λ)}U(\zeta)=\max\{w(\zeta),\psi(\lambda)\}; otherwise U(ζ)=w(ζ)U(\zeta)=w(\zeta). So U≥wU\ge w, and U(κd(λ))=max⁡{w(κd(λ)),ψ(λ)}U(\kappa_{d}(\lambda))=\max\{w(\kappa_{d}(\lambda)),\psi(\lambda)\} for λ∈D\lambda\in\mathcal{D}.

(4a) Far from μ\mu. If λ∈D\lambda\in\mathcal{D} and W2(λ,μ)≥r2/2W_{2}(\lambda,\mu)\ge r_{2}/2, then min⁡{θW2(λ,μ)2,1}≥min⁡{θr22/4,1}>ε\min\{\theta W_{2}(\lambda,\mu)^{2},1\}\ge\min\{\theta r_{2}^{2}/4,1\}>\varepsilon, so (K) gives ψ(λ)<w(κd(λ))\psi(\lambda)<w(\kappa_{d}(\lambda)).

(4b) U≤gU\le g. Let λ∈D\lambda\in\mathcal{D}. If W2(λ,μ)<r2W_{2}(\lambda,\mu)<r_{2}, then by the choice of rΦr_{\Phi}, (G) and the envelope facts,

ψ(λ)+δE(λ)=wδ+(μ)+ε+Φ(κd(λ))<wδ+(μ)+β4+β2<gδ+(λ)≤g(κd(λ))+δE(λ),\psi(\lambda)+\delta\mathcal{E}(\lambda)=w^{+}_{\delta}(\mu)+\varepsilon+\Phi(\kappa_{d}(\lambda))<w^{+}_{\delta}(\mu)+\tfrac{\beta}{4}+\tfrac{\beta}{2}<g^{+}_{\delta}(\lambda)\le g(\kappa_{d}(\lambda))+\delta\mathcal{E}(\lambda),

so ψ(λ)<g(κd(λ))\psi(\lambda)<g(\kappa_{d}(\lambda)); if W2(λ,μ)≥r2W_{2}(\lambda,\mu)\ge r_{2}, then ψ(λ)<w(κd(λ))≤g(κd(λ))\psi(\lambda)<w(\kappa_{d}(\lambda))\le g(\kappa_{d}(\lambda)) by (4a). Together with w≤gw\le g this gives w≤U≤gw\le U\le g on Σd2\Sigma^{2}_{d}, and ∣U∣≤b|U|\le b, so UU is bounded.

(4c) UU exceeds ww somewhere. By Properties of the Lower Semicontinuous Envelope, by Duality §approximation, applied to w∘κd+δEw\circ\kappa_{d}+\delta\mathcal{E} on D\mathcal{D}, fix λk∈D\lambda_{k}\in\mathcal{D} with W2(λk,μ)→0W_{2}(\lambda_{k},\mu)\to0 and w(κd(λk))+δE(λk)→wδ+(μ)w(\kappa_{d}(\lambda_{k}))+\delta\mathcal{E}(\lambda_{k})\to w^{+}_{\delta}(\mu). By The Coupling Test Function of a Bounded Plan: Maximising Couplings, Continuity, Plan Subjets and Localisation §continuity and (2a), Φ(κd(λk))→0\Phi(\kappa_{d}(\lambda_{k}))\to0. Hence ψ(λk)−w(κd(λk))=wδ+(μ)−(w(κd(λk))+δE(λk))+ε+Φ(κd(λk))→ε>0\psi(\lambda_{k})-w(\kappa_{d}(\lambda_{k}))=w^{+}_{\delta}(\mu)-\bigl(w(\kappa_{d}(\lambda_{k}))+\delta\mathcal{E}(\lambda_{k})\bigr)+\varepsilon+\Phi(\kappa_{d}(\lambda_{k}))\to\varepsilon>0, and for some kk, U(κd(λk))≥ψ(λk)>w(κd(λk))U(\kappa_{d}(\lambda_{k}))\ge\psi(\lambda_{k})>w(\kappa_{d}(\lambda_{k})) with λk∈D\lambda_{k}\in\mathcal{D}.

Step 5 (UU is a subsolution with shift range δ0\delta_{0}). Let 0<δ′≤δ00<\delta'\le\delta_{0}, φ′:Σd2→R\varphi':\Sigma^{2}_{d}\to\mathbb{R}, ν∈D\nu\in\mathcal{D} with Uδ′−(λ)−φ′(κd(λ))<Uδ′−(ν)−φ′(κd(ν))U^{-}_{\delta'}(\lambda)-\varphi'(\kappa_{d}(\lambda))<U^{-}_{\delta'}(\nu)-\varphi'(\kappa_{d}(\nu)) for every λ∈D\lambda\in\mathcal{D} with λ≠ν\lambda\ne\nu, and let π′\pi' be a bounded plan at ν\nu with κ2d(π′)∈J+φ′(κd(ν))\kappa_{2d}(\pi')\in J^{+}\varphi'(\kappa_{d}(\nu)). We must show ν∈DΞ\nu\in\mathcal{D}_{\Xi} and

ρ(Uδ′−(ν)+δ′E(ν))+H(π′⊕δ′ Ξ(ν))+σ22(J(Ξ(ν),π′)+δ′∥Ξ(ν)∥22)≤0.(S)\rho\bigl(U^{-}_{\delta'}(\nu)+\delta'\mathcal{E}(\nu)\bigr)+\mathcal{H}\bigl(\pi'\oplus\delta'\,\Xi(\nu)\bigr)+\frac{\sigma^{2}}{2}\Bigl(\mathcal{J}\bigl(\Xi(\nu),\pi'\bigr)+\delta'\lVert\Xi(\nu)\rVert_{2}^{2}\Bigr)\le0.\tag{S}

(5a) The envelope of UU. On D\mathcal{D}, U∘κd−δ′EU\circ\kappa_{d}-\delta'\mathcal{E} is the pointwise maximum of f1=w∘κd−δ′Ef_{1}=w\circ\kappa_{d}-\delta'\mathcal{E} and f2=ψ−δ′Ef_{2}=\psi-\delta'\mathcal{E}. Both are bounded above near each point: f1f_{1} by the envelope facts, f2f_{2} because f2≤bψ−δ′ef_{2}\le b_{\psi}-\delta'e by (B) (Upper and Lower Semicontinuous Envelopes of a Real-Valued Function §near-bounds). Moreover f2=wδ+(μ)+ε+Φ∘κd−(δ+δ′)Ef_{2}=w^{+}_{\delta}(\mu)+\varepsilon+\Phi\circ\kappa_{d}-(\delta+\delta')\mathcal{E} is upper semicontinuous on D\mathcal{D}: given λ∈D\lambda\in\mathcal{D} and η>0\eta>0, the continuity of Φ∘κd\Phi\circ\kappa_{d} on Σd,R⊇D\Sigma_{d,R}\supseteq\mathcal{D} (The Coupling Test Function of a Bounded Plan: Maximising Couplings, Continuity, Plan Subjets and Localisation §continuity) and the lower semicontinuity of E\mathcal{E} on D\mathcal{D} (Sublevel Sets of the Wall-Confined Free Energy are Closed for the Wasserstein Distance §lsc, Lower Semicontinuous Function on a Subset of a Metric Space) give r>0r>0 with Φ(κd(λ′))<Φ(κd(λ))+η/2\Phi(\kappa_{d}(\lambda'))<\Phi(\kappa_{d}(\lambda))+\eta/2 and E(λ′)>E(λ)−η/(2(δ+δ′))\mathcal{E}(\lambda')>\mathcal{E}(\lambda)-\eta/(2(\delta+\delta')) for λ′∈D\lambda'\in\mathcal{D} with W2(λ′,λ)<rW_{2}(\lambda',\lambda)<r, whence f2(λ′)<f2(λ)+ηf_{2}(\lambda')<f_{2}(\lambda)+\eta (Upper Semicontinuous Function on a Subset of a Metric Space). So f2∗=f2f_{2}^{*}=f_{2} by Properties of the Upper Semicontinuous Envelope §fixed, and The Semicontinuous Envelopes of a Pointwise Maximum and of a Pointwise Minimum §upper gives

Uδ′−(λ)=max⁡{wδ′−(λ), ψ(λ)−δ′E(λ)}(λ∈D).U^{-}_{\delta'}(\lambda)=\max\bigl\{w^{-}_{\delta'}(\lambda),\ \psi(\lambda)-\delta'\mathcal{E}(\lambda)\bigr\}\qquad(\lambda\in\mathcal{D}).

(5b) Case A: Uδ′−(ν)=wδ′−(ν)U^{-}_{\delta'}(\nu)=w^{-}_{\delta'}(\nu). By (5a), wδ′−≤Uδ′−w^{-}_{\delta'}\le U^{-}_{\delta'} on D\mathcal{D}, so for λ≠ν\lambda\ne\nu, wδ′−(λ)−φ′(κd(λ))≤Uδ′−(λ)−φ′(κd(λ))<Uδ′−(ν)−φ′(κd(ν))=wδ′−(ν)−φ′(κd(ν))w^{-}_{\delta'}(\lambda)-\varphi'(\kappa_{d}(\lambda))\le U^{-}_{\delta'}(\lambda)-\varphi'(\kappa_{d}(\lambda))<U^{-}_{\delta'}(\nu)-\varphi'(\kappa_{d}(\nu))=w^{-}_{\delta'}(\nu)-\varphi'(\kappa_{d}(\nu)). As ww is a subsolution with shift range δ0≥δ′\delta_{0}\ge\delta', Envelope Viscosity Subsolutions, Supersolutions and Solutions of the Discounted HJB Equation with Free Langevin Noise in a Wall §sub gives ν∈DΞ\nu\in\mathcal{D}_{\Xi} and (S) with wδ′−(ν)w^{-}_{\delta'}(\nu) in place of Uδ′−(ν)U^{-}_{\delta'}(\nu), which is (S).

(5c) Case B: otherwise. Then Uδ′−(ν)=ψ(ν)−δ′E(ν)>wδ′−(ν)≥w(κd(ν))−δ′E(ν)U^{-}_{\delta'}(\nu)=\psi(\nu)-\delta'\mathcal{E}(\nu)>w^{-}_{\delta'}(\nu)\ge w(\kappa_{d}(\nu))-\delta'\mathcal{E}(\nu), so ψ(ν)>w(κd(ν))\psi(\nu)>w(\kappa_{d}(\nu)) and W2(ν,μ)<r2/2<r3W_{2}(\nu,\mu)<r_{2}/2<r_{3} by (4a).

(i) A minimum of E−χ\mathcal{E}-\chi. Let χ:Σd2→R\chi:\Sigma^{2}_{d}\to\mathbb{R}, χ=(Φ−φ′)/(δ+δ′)\chi=(\Phi-\varphi')/(\delta+\delta'). For λ∈D\lambda\in\mathcal{D}, (5a) and the maximum property give ψ(λ)−δ′E(λ)−φ′(κd(λ))≤Uδ′−(λ)−φ′(κd(λ))≤ψ(ν)−δ′E(ν)−φ′(κd(ν))\psi(\lambda)-\delta'\mathcal{E}(\lambda)-\varphi'(\kappa_{d}(\lambda))\le U^{-}_{\delta'}(\lambda)-\varphi'(\kappa_{d}(\lambda))\le\psi(\nu)-\delta'\mathcal{E}(\nu)-\varphi'(\kappa_{d}(\nu)); inserting the definition of ψ\psi and dividing by δ+δ′>0\delta+\delta'>0, E(λ)−χ(κd(λ))≥E(ν)−χ(κd(ν))\mathcal{E}(\lambda)-\chi(\kappa_{d}(\lambda))\ge\mathcal{E}(\nu)-\chi(\kappa_{d}(\nu)) for every λ∈D\lambda\in\mathcal{D}.

(ii) A common realisation. By The Coupling Test Function of a Bounded Plan: Maximising Couplings, Continuity, Plan Subjets and Localisation §attained fix a maximising coupling γ\gamma for ν\nu, a realisation (X~,P~,X~′)(\tilde{X},\tilde{P},\tilde{X}') of it (Couplings of a Square-Integrable Plan with a Law: Displacement and Momentum Pairing §displacement-pairing) and, by Every Square-Integrable Noncommutative Law is the Law of a Square-Integrable Tuple; Realisation of Couplings and of Almost Optimal Pairs §law, L2L^{2} dd-tuples (Y~,P~′)(\tilde{Y},\tilde{P}') with law κ2d(π′)\kappa_{2d}(\pi'). Then law(X~′)=κd(ν)=law(Y~)\mathrm{law}(\tilde{X}')=\kappa_{d}(\nu)=\mathrm{law}(\tilde{Y}), so Gluing Two Square-Integrable Noncommutative Laws along a Common Marginal §glue (with k=dk=d, m=2dm=2d, n=dn=d, π1=law(X~′,X~,P~)\pi_{1}=\mathrm{law}(\tilde{X}',\tilde{X},\tilde{P}), π2=κ2d(π′)\pi_{2}=\kappa_{2d}(\pi')) gives a tracial W*-probability space (H,M,Ω)(H,M,\Omega) and L2L^{2} dd-tuples X′,X,P,P′X',X,P,P' of it with law(X′,X,P)=law(X~′,X~,P~)\mathrm{law}(X',X,P)=\mathrm{law}(\tilde{X}',\tilde{X},\tilde{P}) and law(X′,P′)=κ2d(π′)\mathrm{law}(X',P')=\kappa_{2d}(\pi'); by law invariance (a permutation of blocks is an affine datum) law(X,P,X′)=γ\mathrm{law}(X,P,X')=\gamma. Let s=s(γ)s=s(\gamma) and SS be formed from X,P,X′X,P,X' as in The Coupling Test Function of a Bounded Plan: Maximising Couplings, Continuity, Plan Subjets and Localisation §subjet, so that law(X′,S)∈J−Φ(κd(ν))\mathrm{law}(X',S)\in J^{-}\Phi(\kappa_{d}(\nu)). Put Q=1δ+δ′(S−P′)Q=\frac{1}{\delta+\delta'}(S-P').

(iii) Boundedness. By bounded realisations there are self-adjoint dd-tuples x,p,x′,p′x,p,x',p' in MM with (X,P)=(x,p)Ω(X,P)=(x,p)\Omega, X′=x′ΩX'=x'\Omega (as ν∈Σd,R\nu\in\Sigma_{d,R}) and (X′,P′)=(x′′,p′)Ω(X',P')=(x'',p')\Omega, and x′′=x′x''=x' by uniqueness. With c=h′(s)/s+2θc=h'(s)/s+2\theta if s>0s>0 and c=0c=0 if s=0s=0, S=(p−c(x′−x))ΩS=(p-c(x'-x))\Omega and Q=qΩQ=q\Omega for the self-adjoint dd-tuple q=1δ+δ′(p−c(x′−x)−p′)q=\frac{1}{\delta+\delta'}(p-c(x'-x)-p') in MM. Hence π~=λ(x′,q)∈Σ2d\tilde{\pi}=\lambda_{(x',q)}\in\Sigma_{2d} satisfies π~∘ι1=λx′=ν\tilde{\pi}\circ\iota^{1}=\lambda_{x'}=\nu, so π~\tilde{\pi} is a bounded plan at ν\nu, and κ2d(π~)=law(X′,Q)\kappa_{2d}(\tilde{\pi})=\mathrm{law}(X',Q).

(iv) Plan jets. First, law(X′,−P′)∈J−(−φ′)(κd(ν))\mathrm{law}(X',-P')\in J^{-}(-\varphi')(\kappa_{d}(\nu)): it is a plan at κd(ν)\kappa_{d}(\nu) (Plans at a Square-Integrable Noncommutative Law §plan); given η>0\eta>0, let r>0r>0 be as in Plan Superdifferentials, Plan Subdifferentials and Plan Jets with Slack on Square-Integrable Noncommutative Laws §super for φ′\varphi', κ2d(π′)\kappa_{2d}(\pi') and η\eta; if X^,P^,X^′\hat{X},\hat{P},\hat{X}' are L2L^{2} dd-tuples of any tracial W*-probability space with law(X^,P^)=law(X′,−P′)\mathrm{law}(\hat{X},\hat{P})=\mathrm{law}(X',-P') and ∥X^′−X^∥2<r\lVert\hat{X}'-\hat{X}\rVert_{2}<r, then law(X^,−P^)=κ2d(π′)\mathrm{law}(\hat{X},-\hat{P})=\kappa_{2d}(\pi') by law invariance, so the superjet inequality for (X^,−P^,X^′)(\hat{X},-\hat{P},\hat{X}'), multiplied by −1-1, is the subjet inequality of Plan Superdifferentials, Plan Subdifferentials and Plan Jets with Slack on Square-Integrable Noncommutative Laws §sub for −φ′-\varphi' at (X^,P^,X^′)(\hat{X},\hat{P},\hat{X}'). Next, Plan Jets of a Sum along a Common Realisation §sub, with φ1=Φ\varphi_{1}=\Phi, φ2=−φ′\varphi_{2}=-\varphi', slacks 00, the tuples X′,S,−P′X',S,-P' and λ=κd(ν)\lambda=\kappa_{d}(\nu), gives law(X′,S−P′)∈J−(Φ−φ′)(κd(ν))\mathrm{law}(X',S-P')\in J^{-}(\Phi-\varphi')(\kappa_{d}(\nu)). Finally law(X′,Q)∈J−χ(κd(ν))\mathrm{law}(X',Q)\in J^{-}\chi(\kappa_{d}(\nu)): with c′=δ+δ′c'=\delta+\delta', given η>0\eta>0 let r>0r>0 be as in Plan Superdifferentials, Plan Subdifferentials and Plan Jets with Slack on Square-Integrable Noncommutative Laws §sub for Φ−φ′\Phi-\varphi', law(X′,S−P′)\mathrm{law}(X',S-P') and c′ηc'\eta; if law(X^,P^)=law(X′,Q)\mathrm{law}(\hat{X},\hat{P})=\mathrm{law}(X',Q) and ∥X^′−X^∥2<r\lVert\hat{X}'-\hat{X}\rVert_{2}<r, then law(X^,c′P^)=law(X′,c′Q)=law(X′,S−P′)\mathrm{law}(\hat{X},c'\hat{P})=\mathrm{law}(X',c'Q)=\mathrm{law}(X',S-P'), and dividing the resulting subjet inequality for Φ−φ′\Phi-\varphi' by c′c' gives the one for χ\chi with P^\hat{P} and η\eta.

(v) Regular plan subgradients. By (i) (with any r>0r>0), (iii) and (iv), Wall-Confined Free Energies with Regular Plan Subgradients §regular, applied to χ\chi, ν\nu and the bounded plan π~\tilde{\pi}, gives ν∈DΞ\nu\in\mathcal{D}_{\Xi} and law(X′,Q)=κ2d(π~)=πνΞ\mathrm{law}(X',Q)=\kappa_{2d}(\tilde{\pi})=\pi^{\Xi}_{\nu}. Thus (X,P,X′,Q)(X,P,X',Q) is a score quadruple for (ν,γ)(\nu,\gamma).

(vi) The inequality. The transport of the score (Realising a Square-Integrable Field of the GNS Space of a Bounded Law next to Its Positions: Uniqueness and the Joint Law with a Momentum §shift, Realising a Square-Integrable Field of the GNS Space of a Bounded Law next to Its Positions: Uniqueness and the Joint Law with a Momentum §pairing, Realising a Square-Integrable Field of the GNS Space of a Bounded Law next to Its Positions: Uniqueness and the Joint Law with a Momentum §norm), with λ=ν\lambda=\nu, ϖ=π′\varpi=\pi', the tuples X′,P′,QX',P',Q and t=δ′t=\delta', gives H(π′⊕δ′ Ξ(ν))=HM(X′,P′+δ′Q)\mathcal{H}(\pi'\oplus\delta'\,\Xi(\nu))=\mathcal{H}_{M}(X',P'+\delta'Q), J(Ξ(ν),π′)=⟨Q,P′⟩2\mathcal{J}(\Xi(\nu),\pi')=\langle Q,P'\rangle_{2} and ∥Ξ(ν)∥2=∥Q∥2\lVert\Xi(\nu)\rVert_{2}=\lVert Q\rVert_{2}. As (δ+δ′)Q=S−P′(\delta+\delta')Q=S-P', we have P′+δ′Q=S−δQP'+\delta'Q=S-\delta Q and ⟨Q,P′⟩2+δ′∥Q∥22=⟨Q,S−δQ⟩2=⟨Q,S⟩2−δ∥Q∥22\langle Q,P'\rangle_{2}+\delta'\lVert Q\rVert_{2}^{2}=\langle Q,S-\delta Q\rangle_{2}=\langle Q,S\rangle_{2}-\delta\lVert Q\rVert_{2}^{2}; and Uδ′−(ν)+δ′E(ν)=ψ(ν)U^{-}_{\delta'}(\nu)+\delta'\mathcal{E}(\nu)=\psi(\nu). So the left side of (S) equals Λε\Lambda_{\varepsilon} for the score quadruple (X,P,X′,Q)(X,P,X',Q), which is at most 00 by Step 3, since 0<ε≤ε30<\varepsilon\le\varepsilon_{3} and W2(ν,μ)<r3W_{2}(\nu,\mu)<r_{3}.

Conclusion. In both cases ν∈DΞ\nu\in\mathcal{D}_{\Xi} and (S) holds, so UU is an envelope viscosity subsolution of (E)(\mathrm{E}) with shift range δ0\delta_{0} (Envelope Viscosity Subsolutions, Supersolutions and Solutions of the Discounted HJB Equation with Free Langevin Noise in a Wall §sub). By Step 4, UU is bounded, w≤U≤gw\le U\le g on Σd2\Sigma^{2}_{d}, and U(κd(λk))>w(κd(λk))U(\kappa_{d}(\lambda_{k}))>w(\kappa_{d}(\lambda_{k})) for some λk∈D\lambda_{k}\in\mathcal{D}. Since δ1\delta_{1} was fixed in Step 0 before δ0\delta_{0}, gg and ww, the lemma is proved.
