Writes the defining condition of I(a,b) as a predicative formula over the parameters for R and its order, uses it to express z = I(s,t) from formulas for s and t, and obtains the map i -> I(siI(s_i,ti)t_i) from the scheme for maps given by expressions.

Proof

Terms under γ\gamma, their values and terms of a type are as in Terms and Typed Terms under a Guard (i) and Terms and Typed Terms under a Guard (ii); throughout, the parameters have their fixed values, as in Conditions Expressed by a Predicative Formula, and Guards (i). R\mathbb{R} is a set and ≤\le is a total order on it, by The Real Numbers (i), and << is its strict relation.

Proof of (i). By Intervals of the Real Line (ii) and Intervals of the Real Line (iii), for a,b∈Ra,b\in\mathbb{R} the set I(a,b)I(a,b) is {w∈R:β(a,w,b)}\{w\in\mathbb{R}:\beta(a,w,b)\}, where β(a,w,b)\beta(a,w,b) is, according to the form of II, one of a≤w∧w≤ba\le w\wedge w\le b, a<w∧w<ba<w\wedge w<b, a≤w∧w<ba\le w\wedge w<b, a<w∧w≤ba<w\wedge w\le b, a<wa<w, a≤wa\le w, w<bw<b and w≤bw\le b. Let zz, aa and bb be distinct set variables other than YY and LL, and let ww be a set variable that is none of zz, aa, bb, YY and LL. Let β′(a,w,b)\beta'(a,w,b) be β(a,w,b)\beta(a,w,b) with each part p≤qp\le q written (p,q)∈L(p,q)\in L and each part p<qp<q written ((p,q)∈L∧¬ p=q)((p,q)\in L\wedge\neg\,p=q). By Predicativity under Renaming of Set Variables by Variables, of Formulas with Ordered Pairs, and of Formulas for Relations, Functions, Maps, Injectivity, Surjectivity and Bijectivity (iii) and Uniqueness of Least and Greatest Elements, Properties of the Strict Order, and Trichotomy for Total Orders (ii), for all a,w,b∈Ra,w,b\in\mathbb{R}, β′(a,w,b)\beta'(a,w,b) holds if and only if β(a,w,b)\beta(a,w,b) does. Let θ(z,a,b)\theta(z,a,b) be the formula ∀w (w∈z⇔(w∈Y∧β′(a,w,b)))\forall w\,(w\in z\Leftrightarrow(w\in Y\wedge\beta'(a,w,b))). It applies no quantifier to a class variable, so it is predicative by Predicativity of Expressions with Abbreviations, and Symbol-Free Forms of the Basic Defined Set Symbols (i), and its free variables are among zz, aa, bb, YY and LL. Let a,b∈Ra,b\in\mathbb{R}. The class {w∈R:β′(a,w,b)}\{w\in\mathbb{R}:\beta'(a,w,b)\} of Class Abstraction: the Class of All Sets Satisfying a Predicative Formula (ii) is a subclass of R\mathbb{R}, hence a set by Subclasses of Sets Are Sets, the Union and Power Set of a Set Exist Uniquely, Binary Unions of Sets Are Sets, and the Universal Class Is Proper (i), and it satisfies θ\theta by Class Abstraction: the Class of All Sets Satisfying a Predicative Formula (i); two sets satisfying θ\theta have the same elements, so they are equal by Axiom of Extensionality for Classes. So exactly one set zz satisfies θ(z,a,b)\theta(z,a,b). Its elements are the w∈Rw\in\mathbb{R} with β′(a,w,b)\beta'(a,w,b), that is, with β(a,w,b)\beta(a,w,b), so it is I(a,b)I(a,b) by Axiom of Extensionality for Classes; it is a subset of R\mathbb{R}, so it lies in P(R)\mathcal{P}(\mathbb{R}) by The Union Set and the Power Set of a Set (ii). By Formulas of the Language of Class Theory, Free Variables, Predicative Formulas and Abbreviations (viii), I(a,b)I(a,b) is therefore a defined set symbol given by θ\theta, used properly wherever a,b∈Ra,b\in\mathbb{R}.

Proof of (ii). Values. Under an assignment satisfying γ\gamma, the values aa of ss and bb of tt lie in R\mathbb{R} by Terms and Typed Terms under a Guard (iii), so the value I(a,b)I(a,b) of I(s,t)I(s,t) is a set in P(R)\mathcal{P}(\mathbb{R}) by (i), determined by aa, bb and the values of the parameters. So I(s,t)I(s,t) is a term under γ\gamma satisfying Terms and Typed Terms under a Guard (iii) with P(R)\mathcal{P}(\mathbb{R}).

The formula. Let zz be a set variable that is none of x1,…,xkx_{1},\dots,x_{k}, is not free in γ\gamma and does not occur in I(s,t)I(s,t); as YY and LL occur in I(s,t)I(s,t), zz is neither of them. The set variables form an infinite list by Formulas of the Language of Class Theory, Free Variables, Predicative Formulas and Abbreviations (i), so there are distinct set variables uu and vv that are none of x1,…,xkx_{1},\dots,x_{k} and zz and occur neither in γ\gamma nor in I(s,t)I(s,t); in particular they are not YY or LL, and they do not occur in ss or tt. By (i), applied to the distinct set variables zz, uu and vv, there is a predicative formula θ(z,u,v)\theta(z,u,v), with free variables among zz, uu, vv, YY and LL, such that for all u,v∈Ru,v\in\mathbb{R} the only set zz satisfying θ(z,u,v)\theta(z,u,v) is I(u,v)I(u,v). By Terms and Typed Terms under a Guard (iv) there are predicative formulas ψsu\psi_{s}^{u} and ψtv\psi_{t}^{v} expressing γ∧u=s\gamma\wedge u=s and γ∧v=t\gamma\wedge v=t. By Conditions Expressed by a Predicative Formula, and Guards (ii), the free variables of ψsu\psi_{s}^{u} are among x1,…,xkx_{1},\dots,x_{k}, uu and the parameters of γ\gamma and ss, and those of ψtv\psi_{t}^{v} among x1,…,xkx_{1},\dots,x_{k}, vv and the parameters of γ\gamma and tt; so zz is free in neither, vv is not free in ψsu\psi_{s}^{u}, and uu is not free in ψtv\psi_{t}^{v}. Let ψ\psi be the formula ∃u ∃v (ψsu∧ψtv∧θ(z,u,v))\exists u\,\exists v\,(\psi_{s}^{u}\wedge\psi_{t}^{v}\wedge\theta(z,u,v)). It applies no quantifier to a class variable, so it is predicative by Predicativity of Expressions with Abbreviations, and Symbol-Free Forms of the Basic Defined Set Symbols (i), and its free variables are among x1,…,xkx_{1},\dots,x_{k}, zz and the parameters of γ\gamma and I(s,t)I(s,t). Consider an assignment of sets to x1,…,xkx_{1},\dots,x_{k} and zz. Since vv is not free in ψsu\psi_{s}^{u}, ψsu\psi_{s}^{u} holds for sets assigned to uu and vv if and only if γ\gamma holds and uu is the value aa of ss; likewise, since uu is not free in ψtv\psi_{t}^{v}, ψtv\psi_{t}^{v} holds if and only if γ\gamma holds and vv is the value bb of tt. So ψ\psi holds if and only if γ\gamma holds and θ(z,a,b)\theta(z,a,b), where a,b∈Ra,b\in\mathbb{R} when γ\gamma holds; that is, if and only if γ\gamma holds and z=I(a,b)z=I(a,b). So ψ\psi expresses γ∧z=I(s,t)\gamma\wedge z=I(s,t), Terms and Typed Terms under a Guard (iv) holds, and I(s,t)I(s,t) is of type P(R)\mathcal{P}(\mathbb{R}) by Terms and Typed Terms under a Guard (ii).

Proof of (iii). P(R)\mathcal{P}(\mathbb{R}) is a set by The Union Set and the Power Set of a Set (ii). For i∈Di\in D, sis_{i} and tit_{i} are values of maps at an element of their domain, defined set symbols used properly by Functions, Values of a Function, and Functions from One Class to Another (ii), and they lie in R\mathbb{R} by Values, Restriction and Equality of a Map, and the Map u↦t(u)u\mapsto t(u) as a Defined Set Symbol (ii); so by (i) the expression I(si,ti)I(s_{i},t_{i}) is built from defined set symbols used properly and lies in P(R)\mathcal{P}(\mathbb{R}). So Maps and Relations Given by Formulas (i), with a=Da=D, b=P(R)b=\mathcal{P}(\mathbb{R}) and the expression I(su,tu)I(s_{u},t_{u}) for t(u)t(u), gives exactly one map ff as stated.
