TheoremBase

Checks the three topology axioms directly, writing a union of traces as the trace of the union of all open sets whose traces lie in the family, so no choice is needed.

Proof

Membership in a union ⋃S\bigcup\mathcal{S} and in a power set is as in The Union Set and the Power Set of a Set Β§union and The Union Set and the Power Set of a Set Β§power. By its definition TA\mathcal{T}_{A} is a subset of P(A)\mathcal{P}(A), and a set by Sets and Maps: Ordinary Notation Β§set-builder, as Topological Space Β§topology requires; we check the conditions Topological Space Β§empty-whole, Topological Space Β§unions and Topological Space Β§intersections for TA\mathcal{T}_{A} on AA.

Empty set and whole set. By Topological Space Β§empty-whole for T\mathcal{T}, βˆ…βˆˆT\emptyset\in\mathcal{T} and X∈TX\in\mathcal{T}. The subsets βˆ…\emptyset and AA of AA satisfy βˆ…=Aβˆ©βˆ…\emptyset=A\cap\emptyset and, as AβŠ†XA\subseteq X, A=A∩XA=A\cap X; so βˆ…βˆˆTA\emptyset\in\mathcal{T}_{A} and A∈TAA\in\mathcal{T}_{A}.

Unions. Let S\mathcal{S} be a subset of TA\mathcal{T}_{A}, and let Sβ€²={U∈T:A∩U∈S}\mathcal{S}'=\{U\in\mathcal{T}:A\cap U\in\mathcal{S}\}, a set by Sets and Maps: Ordinary Notation Β§set-builder. As Sβ€²βŠ†T\mathcal{S}'\subseteq\mathcal{T}, Topological Space Β§unions gives ⋃Sβ€²βˆˆT\bigcup\mathcal{S}'\in\mathcal{T}. We show ⋃S=Aβˆ©β‹ƒSβ€²\bigcup\mathcal{S}=A\cap\bigcup\mathcal{S}'. If u∈Aβˆ©β‹ƒSβ€²u\in A\cap\bigcup\mathcal{S}', then u∈Uu\in U for some U∈Sβ€²U\in\mathcal{S}', so u∈A∩Uu\in A\cap U with A∩U∈SA\cap U\in\mathcal{S}, and uβˆˆβ‹ƒSu\in\bigcup\mathcal{S}. Conversely, if uβˆˆβ‹ƒSu\in\bigcup\mathcal{S}, then u∈Wu\in W for some W∈SW\in\mathcal{S}; since W∈TAW\in\mathcal{T}_{A} there is U∈TU\in\mathcal{T} with W=A∩UW=A\cap U, so U∈Sβ€²U\in\mathcal{S}' and u∈A∩UβŠ†Aβˆ©β‹ƒSβ€²u\in A\cap U\subseteq A\cap\bigcup\mathcal{S}'. Hence ⋃S=Aβˆ©β‹ƒSβ€²\bigcup\mathcal{S}=A\cap\bigcup\mathcal{S}', a subset of AA of the required form, and ⋃S∈TA\bigcup\mathcal{S}\in\mathcal{T}_{A}.

Intersections. Let W1,W2∈TAW_{1},W_{2}\in\mathcal{T}_{A}, and take U1,U2∈TU_{1},U_{2}\in\mathcal{T} with W1=A∩U1W_{1}=A\cap U_{1} and W2=A∩U2W_{2}=A\cap U_{2}. Then U1∩U2∈TU_{1}\cap U_{2}\in\mathcal{T} by Topological Space §intersections, and W1∩W2=A∩(U1∩U2)W_{1}\cap W_{2}=A\cap(U_{1}\cap U_{2}), a subset of AA; so W1∩W2∈TAW_{1}\cap W_{2}\in\mathcal{T}_{A}.

The three conditions hold, so TA\mathcal{T}_{A} is a topology on AA by Topological Space Β§topology.
