TheoremBase

Two zero vectors absorb each other, and two negatives of the same vector are compared through the associative and commutative laws.

Proof

The zero vector. Some z∈Vz\in V satisfies v+z=vv+z=v for every v∈Vv\in V, by Vector Space over a Field (iii). If z′∈Vz'\in V satisfies v+z′=vv+z'=v for every v∈Vv\in V as well, then, applying the property of zz at v=z′v=z', Vector Space over a Field (ii), and the property of z′z' at v=zv=z,

z′=z′+z=z+z′=z.z'=z'+z=z+z'=z .

Negatives. Let v∈Vv\in V. Since v+z=vv+z=v for every vv, Vector Space over a Field (iv) gives some w∈Vw\in V with v+w=zv+w=z. If also w′∈Vw'\in V satisfies v+w′=zv+w'=z, then by the property of zz, Vector Space over a Field (i) and Vector Space over a Field (ii),

w=w+z=w+(v+w′)=(w+v)+w′=(v+w)+w′=z+w′=w′+z=w′.w=w+z=w+(v+w')=(w+v)+w'=(v+w)+w'=z+w'=w'+z=w' .
