TheoremBase

Each clause is proved by writing down the predicative formula: the guard conjoined with an equation for a variable or parameter, and for values, pairs, equations and memberships an existential quantifier over fresh set variables bounding the formulas of the given terms, joined by the predicative pair formulas. The set-builder clause then follows by restricted class abstraction and extensionality.

Proof

Each result cited is universally quantified over the data in its own statement. Parameters and their fixed values, guards, terms under γ\gamma and their values, terms of a type and conditions expressed by a predicative formula are as in Conditions Expressed by a Predicative Formula, and Guards §data, Conditions Expressed by a Predicative Formula, and Guards §guard, Terms and Typed Terms under a Guard §term, Terms and Typed Terms under a Guard §typed-term and Conditions Expressed by a Predicative Formula, and Guards §expressed; throughout, the parameters have their fixed values.

Preliminaries. The following facts about formulas are used throughout.

Fresh variables. By Formulas of the Language of Class Theory, Free Variables, Predicative Formulas and Abbreviations §symbols the set variables form an infinite list, while finitely many formulas, terms and variables contain only finitely many variables. So for any finitely many of them there are as many distinct set variables as needed that are other than x1,…,xkx_{1},\dots,x_{k} and occur in none of them; such variables are called fresh below.

Compound formulas. For predicative formulas φ\varphi and χ\chi and a set variable ww, every atomic formula and the formulas (φ∧χ)(\varphi\wedge\chi) and ∃w φ\exists w\,\varphi are predicative by Formulas of the Language of Class Theory, Free Variables, Predicative Formulas and Abbreviations §predicative, since their parts of the form ∃X ψ\exists X\,\psi with XX a class variable are parts of φ\varphi or χ\chi, and by Formulas of the Language of Class Theory, Free Variables, Predicative Formulas and Abbreviations §free the free variables of (φ∧χ)(\varphi\wedge\chi) are those of φ\varphi and of χ\chi, and those of ∃w φ\exists w\,\varphi are those of φ\varphi other than ww.

Reading. By Formulas of the Language of Class Theory, Free Variables, Predicative Formulas and Abbreviations §reading, (φ∧χ)(\varphi\wedge\chi) holds if and only if both φ\varphi and χ\chi hold, and ∃w φ\exists w\,\varphi holds if and only if there is a set ww for which φ\varphi holds; and, as usual, whether a formula holds depends only on the values of its free variables.

Pair formulas. For distinct set variables rr, pp and qq and distinct set variables b1b_{1} and b2b_{2} other than them, let ω(r,p,q)\omega(r,p,q) be the formula

∀b1 (b1∈r⇔(∀b2 (b2∈b1⇔b2=p)∨∀b2 (b2∈b1⇔(b2=p∨b2=q))))\forall b_{1}\,\bigl(b_{1}\in r\Leftrightarrow(\forall b_{2}\,(b_{2}\in b_{1}\Leftrightarrow b_{2}=p)\vee\forall b_{2}\,(b_{2}\in b_{1}\Leftrightarrow(b_{2}=p\vee b_{2}=q)))\bigr)

of Predicativity of Expressions with Abbreviations, and Symbol-Free Forms of the Basic Defined Set Symbols §ordered-pair, with rr, pp, qq, b1b_{1} and b2b_{2} for zz, uu, vv, ww and tt there. It is written with the abbreviations of Formulas of the Language of Class Theory, Free Variables, Predicative Formulas and Abbreviations §formula, whose elimination introduces no quantifier over a class variable, so it quantifies over set variables only and is predicative by Formulas of the Language of Class Theory, Free Variables, Predicative Formulas and Abbreviations §predicative. By Formulas of the Language of Class Theory, Free Variables, Predicative Formulas and Abbreviations §free, every occurrence of b1b_{1} and b2b_{2} in it is bound, so its free variables are among rr, pp and qq. By Predicativity of Expressions with Abbreviations, and Symbol-Free Forms of the Basic Defined Set Symbols §ordered-pair, when sets are assigned to rr, pp and qq, ω(r,p,q)\omega(r,p,q) holds if and only if r=(p,q)r=(p,q), the ordered pair of pp and qq. Below, for distinct set variables zz, uu and vv, the expression z=(u,v)z=(u,v) denotes the formula ω(z,u,v)\omega(z,u,v) with b1b_{1} and b2b_{2} fresh for all other variables of the surrounding formula.

For a term tt of type AA under γ\gamma and a set variable ww that is none of x1,…,xkx_{1},\dots,x_{k}, is not free in γ\gamma and does not occur in tt, write ψtw\psi_{t}^{w} for a predicative formula expressing γ∧w=t\gamma\wedge w=t, as Terms and Typed Terms under a Guard §type-expressed provides: by Conditions Expressed by a Predicative Formula, and Guards §expressed, its free variables are among x1,…,xkx_{1},\dots,x_{k}, ww and the parameters of γ\gamma and tt, and, the parameters having their values, under every assignment of sets to x1,…,xkx_{1},\dots,x_{k} and ww, it holds if and only if γ\gamma holds and ww is the set tt.

Clause variable. Under every assignment satisfying γ\gamma, the value of xix_{i} is the set assigned to xix_{i}, so xix_{i} is a term under γ\gamma by Terms and Typed Terms under a Guard §term; and this set lies in AA by hypothesis. Let zz be a set variable that is none of x1,…,xkx_{1},\dots,x_{k}, is not free in γ\gamma and does not occur in xix_{i}, and let ψ\psi be the formula (γ∧z=xi)(\gamma\wedge z=x_{i}). It is predicative by the compound formulas fact, and its free variables are those of γ\gamma, which are among x1,…,xkx_{1},\dots,x_{k} and the parameters of γ\gamma, together with zz and xix_{i}. By the reading fact, under every assignment of sets to x1,…,xkx_{1},\dots,x_{k} and zz, ψ\psi holds if and only if γ\gamma holds and zz is the set xix_{i}.

Clause parameter. Likewise, with cc in place of xix_{i}: its value, the same under every assignment, is a set lying in AA by hypothesis, so cc is a term under γ\gamma; and ψ\psi is the formula (γ∧z=c)(\gamma\wedge z=c), where zz is not cc since it does not occur in cc.

Clause value. By Functions, Values of a Function, and Functions from One Class to Another §map, FF is a function with domain dom⁡F=A\operatorname{dom}F=A and range ran⁡F⊆B\operatorname{ran}F\subseteq B, with ⊆\subseteq as in Subclasses and Subsets §subclass.

First part. Consider an assignment satisfying γ\gamma. Since tt is of type AA, the value of tt is a set lying in A=dom⁡FA=\operatorname{dom}F by Terms and Typed Terms under a Guard §type-defined; so by Functions, Values of a Function, and Functions from One Class to Another §value exactly one set vv satisfies (t,v)∈F(t,v)\in F, and this set is the value F(t)F(t) of FF at tt, the value of F(t)F(t) under the assignment. It is determined by the value of tt and the value of the parameter FF, and the value of tt is determined by the sets assigned to x1,…,xkx_{1},\dots,x_{k} and the values of the parameters by Terms and Typed Terms under a Guard §term; so F(t)F(t) is a term under γ\gamma by Terms and Typed Terms under a Guard §term. As (t,F(t))∈F(t,F(t))\in F, the set F(t)F(t) lies in ran⁡F\operatorname{ran}F by Relations, Domain, Range, Inverse and Composition §range and Class Abstraction: the Class of All Sets Satisfying a Predicative Formula §abstraction, hence in BB by Subclasses and Subsets §subclass.

Second part. Let zz be a set variable that is none of x1,…,xkx_{1},\dots,x_{k}, is not free in γ\gamma and does not occur in F(t)F(t); so zz does not occur in tt and is not FF. Choose distinct fresh set variables ww and p′p' for γ\gamma, tt, FF and zz. Then ww is none of x1,…,xkx_{1},\dots,x_{k}, is not free in γ\gamma and does not occur in tt, so ψtw\psi_{t}^{w} is defined. Let χ\chi be the formula ∃p′ (p′=(w,z)∧p′∈F)\exists p'\,(p'=(w,z)\wedge p'\in F), with the pair formula p′=(w,z)p'=(w,z), that is, ω(p′,w,z)\omega(p',w,z). By the pair formulas fact and the compound formulas fact, χ\chi is predicative and its free variables are among ww, zz and FF. Let ψ\psi be the formula ∃w (ψtw∧χ)\exists w\,(\psi_{t}^{w}\wedge\chi). By the compound formulas fact, ψ\psi is predicative, and its free variables are among x1,…,xkx_{1},\dots,x_{k}, zz, the parameters of γ\gamma and tt, and FF, that is, among x1,…,xkx_{1},\dots,x_{k}, zz and the parameters of γ\gamma and F(t)F(t). The variable zz is not free in ψtw\psi_{t}^{w}, being none of x1,…,xkx_{1},\dots,x_{k}, not ww, not free in γ\gamma and not occurring in tt, hence not a parameter of γ\gamma or tt.

Consider an assignment of sets to x1,…,xkx_{1},\dots,x_{k} and zz, and let ww be a set. By the reading fact and the pair formulas fact, χ\chi holds if and only if there is a set p′p' with p′=(w,z)p'=(w,z) and p′∈Fp'\in F, that is, by Predicativity of Expressions with Abbreviations, and Symbol-Free Forms of the Basic Defined Set Symbols §pair-membership, if and only if (w,z)∈F(w,z)\in F. As the value of FF is a function, by Predicativity of Expressions with Abbreviations, and Symbol-Free Forms of the Basic Defined Set Symbols §value this is the case if and only if w∈dom⁡Fw\in\operatorname{dom}F and z=F(w)z=F(w). By the reading fact and the property of ψtw\psi_{t}^{w}, ψ\psi holds if and only if there is a set ww such that γ\gamma holds, ww is the set tt, w∈dom⁡Fw\in\operatorname{dom}F and z=F(w)z=F(w). If γ\gamma holds, tt is a set lying in A=dom⁡FA=\operatorname{dom}F by the first part, and taking ww to be it shows that this holds if and only if z=F(t)z=F(t). So ψ\psi holds if and only if γ\gamma holds and zz is the set F(t)F(t).

Clause pair. First part. Consider an assignment satisfying γ\gamma. Since ss is of type AA and tt of type BB, the values of ss and tt are sets with s∈As\in A and t∈Bt\in B by Terms and Typed Terms under a Guard §type-defined. So exactly one set is the ordered pair of ss and tt of The Ordered Pair of Two Sets and Nested Tuples §pair, which is the value of (s,t)(s,t) under the assignment. It is determined by the values of ss and tt, which are determined by the sets assigned to x1,…,xkx_{1},\dots,x_{k} and the values of the parameters by Terms and Typed Terms under a Guard §term, so (s,t)(s,t) is a term under γ\gamma by Terms and Typed Terms under a Guard §term; and (s,t)∈A×B(s,t)\in A\times B by Membership in a Cartesian Product, and the Cartesian Product of Two Sets Is a Set §membership.

Second part. Let zz be a set variable that is none of x1,…,xkx_{1},\dots,x_{k}, is not free in γ\gamma and does not occur in (s,t)(s,t), so it occurs in neither ss nor tt. Choose distinct fresh set variables uu and vv for γ\gamma, ss, tt and zz. Then ψsu\psi_{s}^{u} and ψtv\psi_{t}^{v} are defined; let ψ\psi be the formula ∃u ∃v (ψsu∧(ψtv∧z=(u,v)))\exists u\,\exists v\,(\psi_{s}^{u}\wedge(\psi_{t}^{v}\wedge z=(u,v))), with the pair formula z=(u,v)z=(u,v). By the compound formulas fact and the pair formulas fact, ψ\psi is predicative, with free variables among x1,…,xkx_{1},\dots,x_{k}, zz and the parameters of γ\gamma, ss and tt, which are those of γ\gamma and (s,t)(s,t). The free variables of ψsu\psi_{s}^{u} are among x1,…,xkx_{1},\dots,x_{k}, uu and the parameters of γ\gamma and ss, so neither vv nor zz is free in it; likewise neither uu nor zz is free in ψtv\psi_{t}^{v}.

Consider an assignment of sets to x1,…,xkx_{1},\dots,x_{k} and zz. By the reading fact, the properties of ψsu\psi_{s}^{u} and ψtv\psi_{t}^{v} and the pair formulas fact, ψ\psi holds if and only if there are sets uu and vv such that γ\gamma holds, uu is the set ss, vv is the set tt, and zz is the ordered pair of uu and vv. If γ\gamma holds, ss and tt are sets by the first part, and taking uu and vv to be them shows that this holds if and only if zz is the ordered pair (s,t)(s,t). So ψ\psi holds if and only if γ\gamma holds and zz is the set (s,t)(s,t).

Clause equation. Choose a fresh set variable uu for γ\gamma, ss and tt. Then ψsu\psi_{s}^{u} and ψtu\psi_{t}^{u} are defined; let ψ\psi be the formula ∃u (ψsu∧ψtu)\exists u\,(\psi_{s}^{u}\wedge\psi_{t}^{u}). By the compound formulas fact it is predicative, with free variables among x1,…,xkx_{1},\dots,x_{k} and the parameters of γ\gamma, ss and tt. Under an assignment of sets to x1,…,xkx_{1},\dots,x_{k}, by the reading fact and the properties of ψsu\psi_{s}^{u} and ψtu\psi_{t}^{u}, ψ\psi holds if and only if there is a set uu such that γ\gamma holds and uu is both the set ss and the set tt. If γ\gamma holds, ss and tt are sets by Terms and Typed Terms under a Guard §type-defined, and there is a set uu with u=su=s and u=tu=t if and only if s=ts=t. So ψ\psi holds if and only if γ\gamma holds and s=ts=t.

Clause membership. Choose a fresh set variable uu for γ\gamma, tt and CC, and let ψ\psi be the formula ∃u (ψtu∧u∈C)\exists u\,(\psi_{t}^{u}\wedge u\in C). By the compound formulas fact it is predicative, with free variables among x1,…,xkx_{1},\dots,x_{k} and the parameters of γ\gamma, tt and CC. Under an assignment of sets to x1,…,xkx_{1},\dots,x_{k}, by the reading fact and the property of ψtu\psi_{t}^{u}, ψ\psi holds if and only if there is a set uu such that γ\gamma holds, uu is the set tt, and u∈Cu\in C. If γ\gamma holds, tt is a set by Terms and Typed Terms under a Guard §type-defined, and taking uu to be tt shows that this holds if and only if t∈Ct\in C. So ψ\psi holds if and only if γ\gamma holds and t∈Ct\in C.

Clause set-builder. The formula x∈Dx\in D is atomic, hence predicative by the compound formulas fact, and its free variables are xx and the parameter DD, so it is a guard by Conditions Expressed by a Predicative Formula, and Guards §guard. By the clauses equation and membership, formulas ψ=\psi_{=} and ψ∈\psi_{\in} as in the statement exist; by Conditions Expressed by a Predicative Formula, and Guards §expressed their free variables are among xx and the parameters of γ\gamma, ss, tt and CC, all different from xx. Since ψ=\psi_{=} is predicative, Class Abstraction: the Class of All Sets Satisfying a Predicative Formula §restricted gives the class {x∈D:ψ=}\{x\in D:\psi_{=}\}, which is the class {x:x∈D∧ψ=}\{x:x\in D\wedge\psi_{=}\}. Let aa be a set. By Class Abstraction: the Class of All Sets Satisfying a Predicative Formula §abstraction, aa is an element of this class if and only if a∈Da\in D and ψ=\psi_{=} holds with aa assigned to xx; since ψ=\psi_{=} expresses γ∧s=t\gamma\wedge s=t and γ\gamma is x∈Dx\in D, this is the case if and only if a∈Da\in D and s=ts=t with aa assigned to xx. In particular every element of {x∈D:ψ=}\{x\in D:\psi_{=}\} lies in DD, so it is a subclass of the set DD by Subclasses and Subsets §subclass, and hence a set by Subclasses of Sets Are Sets, the Union and Power Set of a Set Exist Uniquely, Binary Unions of Sets Are Sets, and the Universal Class Is Proper §subclass. Its elements do not depend on the choice of ψ=\psi_{=}, so two choices give the same class by Axiom of Extensionality for Classes. The same argument, with ψ∈\psi_{\in} and the condition t∈Ct\in C, applies to {x∈D:ψ∈}\{x\in D:\psi_{\in}\}.
