The set of open subsets is pinned down by its members through the predicative formula for open subsets, and the Borel σ-algebra by the membership criterion for a generated σ-algebra, quantifying over σ-algebras as sets; the formulas are then renamed to the given variables.

Proof

Throughout, formulas are written with abbreviations as in Formulas of the Language of Class Theory, Free Variables, Predicative Formulas and Abbreviations (vi), a formula being predicative when it is so with its abbreviations eliminated, and the given x0,…,xn−1x_{0},\dots,x_{n-1} are the first of distinct set variables x0,x1,…x_{0},x_{1},\dots as in Renaming and Substituting Variables in Predicative Formulas, so that x0,…,x5x_{0},\dots,x_{5} are distinct also when n<6n<6. The parameters N\mathbb{N}, R\mathbb{R}, ++, 00 and ≤\le are variables other than x0,x1,…x_{0},x_{1},\dots and other than the bound variables below, at their fixed values as in Conditions Expressed by a Predicative Formula, and Guards (i). The letter ww denotes a further set variable, distinct from x0,x1,…x_{0},x_{1},\dots and from the parameters, and the bound variables of the formulas taken from other items are chosen other than ww and x0,x1,…x_{0},x_{1},\dots. Where a cited item is stated for the earlier version of metric spaces, open sets or σ\sigma-algebras, the two versions agree (The Earlier and the New Versions of the Definitions of Metric Spaces, Convergence, Continuity and Compactness Agree (i), The Earlier and the New Versions of the Definitions of Metric Spaces, Convergence, Continuity and Compactness Agree (v), The Earlier and the New Versions of the Definitions of σ-Algebras, Measures, Measurable Functions and Integrals Agree (i)).

The formula for Td\mathcal{T}_{d}. Write XX, dd, TT and UU for x0x_{0}, x1x_{1}, x2x_{2} and x3x_{3}. By Kit for def:metric-space (vi) with its nn, ii and jj equal to 22, 00 and 11, there is a predicative formula μ0\mu_{0} in x0,x1x_{0},x_{1}, with parameters among R\mathbb{R}, ++, 00 and ≤\le, that expresses "dd is a map X×X→RX\times X\to\mathbb{R} and (X,d)(X,d) is a metric space"; it is also a predicative formula in x0,…,x5x_{0},\dots,x_{5} (Renaming and Substituting Variables in Predicative Formulas (ii)). By Kit for def:open-subset-metric-space (i) with its nn, ii, jj and kk equal to 44, 00, 11 and 33, there is a predicative formula ω\omega in x0,…,x3x_{0},\dots,x_{3}, with the same parameters, that expresses "(X,d)(X,d) is a metric space, U⊆XU\subseteq X, and UU is open in (X,d)(X,d)". Let

τ=μ0∧∀U (U∈T⇔ω).\tau=\mu_{0}\wedge\forall U\,\bigl(U\in T\Leftrightarrow\omega\bigr).

It is predicative, being built from predicative formulas by connectives and a quantifier over the set variable x3x_{3} (Formulas of the Language of Class Theory, Free Variables, Predicative Formulas and Abbreviations (v)), and its free variables are among x0,x1,x2x_{0},x_{1},x_{2} and the parameters.

Let sets XX, dd and TT be assigned to x0x_{0}, x1x_{1} and x2x_{2}. If dd is not a map X×X→RX\times X\to\mathbb{R} or (X,d)(X,d) is not a metric space, then μ0\mu_{0} fails, and so do τ\tau and the condition "(X,d)(X,d) is a metric space and T=TdT=\mathcal{T}_{d}". Suppose now that (X,d)(X,d) is a metric space, so that μ0\mu_{0} holds. For every set UU assigned to x3x_{3}, ω\omega holds exactly when U⊆XU\subseteq X and UU is open in (X,d)(X,d). So τ\tau holds if and only if, for every set UU,

U∈T  ⟺  U⊆X and U is open in (X,d).U\in T\iff U\subseteq X\text{ and }U\text{ is open in }(X,d).

By The Open Sets of a Metric Space Form a Set, Given by a Predicative Formula (ii), Td\mathcal{T}_{d} is the only set with this property; as TT is a set, τ\tau holds if and only if T=TdT=\mathcal{T}_{d}. In all cases τ\tau holds exactly when the condition does, so τ\tau is a predicative formula in x0,x1,x2x_{0},x_{1},x_{2}, in the sense of Renaming and Substituting Variables in Predicative Formulas, expressing "(X,d)(X,d) is a metric space and T=TdT=\mathcal{T}_{d}" with XX, dd and TT the sets assigned to x0x_{0}, x1x_{1} and x2x_{2}.

The set of open subsets. By Renaming and Substituting Variables in Predicative Formulas (i), with its number of variables equal to 33 and its renaming map π\pi given by π(0)=i\pi(0)=i, π(1)=j\pi(1)=j and π(2)=k\pi(2)=k, the formula τ(xi,xj,xk)\tau(x_{i},x_{j},x_{k}) is a predicative formula in x0,…,xn−1x_{0},\dots,x_{n-1} that holds, under every assignment of sets to x0,…,xn−1x_{0},\dots,x_{n-1}, exactly when (xi,xj)(x_{i},x_{j}) is a metric space and xk=Txjx_{k}=\mathcal{T}_{x_{j}}. This proves (i).

The formula for B(X,d)\mathcal{B}(X,d). Now write XX, dd, BB, AA, GG and T′T' for x0,…,x5x_{0},\dots,x_{5}. By Kit for def:sigma-algebra-measurable-space (i), with its nn, ii and jj equal to 66, 00 and 44, there is a predicative formula γ\gamma in x0,…,x5x_{0},\dots,x_{5}, with free variables among x0x_{0}, x4x_{4} and the parameter N\mathbb{N}, that holds, for sets XX and GG assigned to x0x_{0} and x4x_{4}, exactly when GG is a σ\sigma-algebra on XX. By Renaming and Substituting Variables in Predicative Formulas (i) with its number of variables equal to 33, its nn equal to 66 and its renaming map π\pi given by π(0)=0\pi(0)=0, π(1)=1\pi(1)=1, π(2)=5\pi(2)=5, the formula τ′=τ(x0,x1,x5)\tau'=\tau(x_{0},x_{1},x_{5}), its bound variables renamed so as to be other than x3x_{3} and x4x_{4}, is a predicative formula in x0,…,x5x_{0},\dots,x_{5} that holds exactly when (X,d)(X,d) is a metric space and T′=TdT'=\mathcal{T}_{d}. Let

β=μ0∧∀A (A∈B⇔(∀w (w∈A⇒w∈X)∧∀G ((γ∧∃T′ (τ′∧∀w (w∈T′⇒w∈G)))⇒A∈G))).\beta=\mu_{0}\wedge\forall A\,\Bigl(A\in B\Leftrightarrow\Bigl(\forall w\,(w\in A\Rightarrow w\in X)\wedge\forall G\,\Bigl(\bigl(\gamma\wedge\exists T'\,\bigl(\tau'\wedge\forall w\,(w\in T'\Rightarrow w\in G)\bigr)\bigr)\Rightarrow A\in G\Bigr)\Bigr)\Bigr).

It is predicative, every quantifier in it being applied to a set variable (Formulas of the Language of Class Theory, Free Variables, Predicative Formulas and Abbreviations (v)), and its free variables are among x0,x1,x2x_{0},x_{1},x_{2} and the parameters.

Let sets XX, dd and BB be assigned to x0x_{0}, x1x_{1} and x2x_{2}. If dd is not a map X×X→RX\times X\to\mathbb{R} or (X,d)(X,d) is not a metric space, then μ0\mu_{0} fails, and so do β\beta and the condition "(X,d)(X,d) is a metric space and B=B(X,d)B=\mathcal{B}(X,d)". Suppose now that (X,d)(X,d) is a metric space, and let sets AA and GG be assigned to x3x_{3} and x4x_{4}. For a set T′T' assigned to x5x_{5}, τ′\tau' holds exactly when T′=TdT'=\mathcal{T}_{d}, and Td\mathcal{T}_{d} is a set (The Open Sets of a Metric Space Form a Set, Given by a Predicative Formula (ii)); so ∃T′ (τ′∧∀w (w∈T′⇒w∈G))\exists T'\,\bigl(\tau'\wedge\forall w\,(w\in T'\Rightarrow w\in G)\bigr) holds exactly when Td⊆G\mathcal{T}_{d}\subseteq G (Subclasses and Subsets (i)). Every σ\sigma-algebra on XX is a set, by σ-Algebra and Measurable Space (i), so the quantifier ∀G\forall G ranges over all of them, and the second conjunct of the bracket says that A∈GA\in G for every σ\sigma-algebra GG on XX with Td⊆G\mathcal{T}_{d}\subseteq G; the first says A⊆XA\subseteq X. The set Td\mathcal{T}_{d} is a set of subsets of XX, and B(X,d)=σ(Td)\mathcal{B}(X,d)=\sigma(\mathcal{T}_{d}) (Borel Sigma-Algebra of a Metric Space (i)); so by The σ-Algebra Generated by a Set of Subsets (ii) the bracket holds exactly when

A∈B(X,d).A\in\mathcal{B}(X,d).

Hence β\beta holds if and only if every set AA satisfies A∈B⇔A∈B(X,d)A\in B\Leftrightarrow A\in\mathcal{B}(X,d). If B=B(X,d)B=\mathcal{B}(X,d), this is clear; conversely, if it holds, then B=B(X,d)B=\mathcal{B}(X,d) by Axiom of Extensionality for Classes. In all cases β\beta holds exactly when the condition does, so β\beta is a predicative formula in x0,x1,x2x_{0},x_{1},x_{2} expressing "(X,d)(X,d) is a metric space and B=B(X,d)B=\mathcal{B}(X,d)" with XX, dd and BB the sets assigned to x0x_{0}, x1x_{1} and x2x_{2}.

The Borel σ\sigma-algebra. By Renaming and Substituting Variables in Predicative Formulas (i), with its number of variables equal to 33 and its renaming map π\pi given by π(0)=i\pi(0)=i, π(1)=j\pi(1)=j and π(2)=k\pi(2)=k, the formula β(xi,xj,xk)\beta(x_{i},x_{j},x_{k}) is a predicative formula in x0,…,xn−1x_{0},\dots,x_{n-1} that holds, under every assignment of sets to x0,…,xn−1x_{0},\dots,x_{n-1}, exactly when (xi,xj)(x_{i},x_{j}) is a metric space and xk=B(xi,xj)x_{k}=\mathcal{B}(x_{i},x_{j}). This proves (ii).
