TheoremBase

The triangle inequality of the norm in the real numbers is read in Real, whose sum and order are those of the real numbers.

Proof

By the triangle inequality of the norm (Norms and Real Normed Spaces (iv)),

∥u+v∥≤∥u∥+∥v∥\lVert u+v\rVert\le\lVert u\rVert+\lVert v\rVert

in R\mathbb{R}. The sum and the order of Real\mathrm{Real} are those of R\mathbb{R} (The Real Numbers as a Type (ii)): the set of a+ba+b is the sum of the sets of aa and bb, that is a+b=∥u∥+∥v∥a+b=\lVert u\rVert+\lVert v\rVert, and c≤a+bc\le a+b in Real\mathrm{Real} holds exactly when the set of cc is at most the set of a+ba+b in R\mathbb{R}. As c=∥u+v∥c=\lVert u+v\rVert, the displayed inequality is this statement, so c≤a+bc\le a+b.
