Bounds every ν(B) − ν(A∖B) by ν⁺(A) + ν⁻(A) through the Jordan decomposition and monotonicity of measures, and observes that B = A ∩ P attains this bound.

Proof

Throughout, F\mathcal{F} is closed under the finite set operations used below, being a σ\sigma-algebra, and Sν(A)S_{\nu}(A) is a set of real numbers, the image of a set under a function given by an expression (routine facts of the setting).

Step 1: a Hahn set exists. By the Hahn decomposition theorem (which uses the axiom of dependent choice), ν\nu has a Hahn set. Let PP be any Hahn set for ν\nu, and let ν+\nu^{+} and ν−\nu^{-} be the Jordan decomposition formed with it: finite measures on (X,F)(X,\mathcal{F}) with ν=ν+−ν−\nu=\nu^{+}-\nu^{-} setwise. Their values are real numbers ≥0\ge0.

Step 2: an upper bound. Let B∈FB\in\mathcal{F} with B⊆AB\subseteq A. Then A∖B∈FA\setminus B\in\mathcal{F}, and both BB and A∖BA\setminus B are contained in AA. Since ν−(B)≥0\nu^{-}(B)\ge0 and ν+(A∖B)≥0\nu^{+}(A\setminus B)\ge0, and measures are monotone,

ν(B)−ν(A∖B)=ν+(B)−ν−(B)−ν+(A∖B)+ν−(A∖B)≤ν+(B)+ν−(A∖B)≤ν+(A)+ν−(A).\nu(B)-\nu(A\setminus B)=\nu^{+}(B)-\nu^{-}(B)-\nu^{+}(A\setminus B)+\nu^{-}(A\setminus B)\le\nu^{+}(B)+\nu^{-}(A\setminus B)\le\nu^{+}(A)+\nu^{-}(A).

So ν+(A)+ν−(A)\nu^{+}(A)+\nu^{-}(A) is an upper bound of Sν(A)S_{\nu}(A).

Step 3: the bound is attained. The set B0=A∩PB_{0}=A\cap P lies in F\mathcal{F} and is contained in AA, and A∖B0=A∖PA\setminus B_{0}=A\setminus P. Hence

ν(A∩P)−ν(A∖P)=ν(B0)−ν(A∖B0)∈Sν(A),\nu(A\cap P)-\nu(A\setminus P)=\nu(B_{0})-\nu(A\setminus B_{0})\in S_{\nu}(A),

and by the defining formulas of the Jordan decomposition this number equals ν+(A)+ν−(A)\nu^{+}(A)+\nu^{-}(A). By Step 2 it is therefore the greatest element of Sν(A)S_{\nu}(A); as PP was an arbitrary Hahn set, this proves (i).
