Open sets are Borel by definition, closed sets by complementation and closed balls as closed sets; for a subspace, open sets are the traces of open sets (via the union of all qualifying balls), and the trace equalities follow from a good-sets argument and minimality.

Proof

Throughout, B(X)=σ(Td)\mathcal{B}(X)=\sigma(\mathcal{T}_{d}) and B(Y)=σ(TdY)\mathcal{B}(Y)=\sigma(\mathcal{T}_{d_{Y}}) by Borel Sigma-Algebra of a Metric Space (i), where TdY\mathcal{T}_{d_{Y}} is the set of subsets of YY open in (Y,dY)(Y,d_{Y}); both are σ\sigma-algebras, on XX and on YY, containing their generating sets, by Closure Properties of σ-Algebras, Intersections and Traces of σ-Algebras, and the Generated σ-Algebra (iii).

Open sets. Let UU be open in (X,d)(X,d). Then U∈TdU\in\mathcal{T}_{d} by Metric Spaces: Balls, the Metric Topology, and the Real and Complex Numbers as Metric Spaces (iii), and Td⊆σ(Td)=B(X)\mathcal{T}_{d}\subseteq\sigma(\mathcal{T}_{d})=\mathcal{B}(X), so U∈B(X)U\in\mathcal{B}(X). This proves (i).

Closed sets. Let A⊆XA\subseteq X be closed in (X,Td)(X,\mathcal{T}_{d}). Then X∖A∈TdX\setminus A\in\mathcal{T}_{d} by Closed Subset of a Topological Space (i), so X∖A∈B(X)X\setminus A\in\mathcal{B}(X) by (i). Since B(X)\mathcal{B}(X) is closed under complements in XX by σ-Algebra and Measurable Space (i), A=X∖(X∖A)∈B(X)A=X\setminus(X\setminus A)\in\mathcal{B}(X). This proves (ii).

Points and closed balls. Let x∈Xx\in X, let r≥0r\ge0 be real, and put Bˉ=Bˉd(x,r)\bar{B}=\bar{B}_{d}(x,r). We show that X∖BˉX\setminus\bar{B} is open in (X,d)(X,d). Let y∈X∖Bˉy\in X\setminus\bar{B}. By Closed Ball in a Metric Space (ii), d(x,y)≤rd(x,y)\le r fails, so r<d(x,y)r<d(x,y) by totality of ≤\le (The Real Numbers as a Type (v)), and s=d(x,y)−rs=d(x,y)-r is a real number (Differences, Quotients and Absolute Values of Real Numbers, Read in the Type Real (i)) with 0<s0<s, by adding −r-r to both sides of r<d(x,y)r<d(x,y) (The Real Numbers as a Type (vi), The Real Numbers as a Type (iv)). Let z∈Bd(y,s)z\in B_{d}(y,s); then z∈Xz\in X and d(y,z)<sd(y,z)<s by Open Ball in a Metric Space (ii). By Metric Space (v) and Metric Space (iv),

d(x,y)≤d(x,z)+d(z,y)=d(x,z)+d(y,z)<d(x,z)+s,d(x,y)\le d(x,z)+d(z,y)=d(x,z)+d(y,z)<d(x,z)+s,

the last step adding d(x,z)d(x,z) to both sides of d(y,z)<sd(y,z)<s (The Real Numbers as a Type (vi), The Real Numbers as a Type (iv)); so d(x,y)<d(x,z)+sd(x,y)<d(x,z)+s by transitivity (The Real Numbers as a Type (v)), and d(x,z)>d(x,y)−s=rd(x,z)>d(x,y)-s=r by adding −s-s to both sides (The Real Numbers as a Type (vi), The Real Numbers as a Type (iv)); hence d(x,z)≤rd(x,z)\le r fails (The Real Numbers as a Type (v)), and z∉Bˉz\notin\bar{B} by Closed Ball in a Metric Space (ii); thus z∈X∖Bˉz\in X\setminus\bar{B}. Hence Bd(y,s)⊆X∖BˉB_{d}(y,s)\subseteq X\setminus\bar{B} for every y∈X∖Bˉy\in X\setminus\bar{B}, and X∖BˉX\setminus\bar{B} is open in (X,d)(X,d) by Open Subset of a Metric Space (i). So X∖Bˉ∈TdX\setminus\bar{B}\in\mathcal{T}_{d}, Bˉ\bar{B} is closed in (X,Td)(X,\mathcal{T}_{d}) by Closed Subset of a Topological Space (i), and Bˉ∈B(X)\bar{B}\in\mathcal{B}(X) by (ii). This proves (iv).

For the singleton, let yy be any set. By Closed Ball in a Metric Space (ii), y∈Bˉd(x,0)y\in\bar{B}_{d}(x,0) if and only if y∈Xy\in X and d(x,y)≤0d(x,y)\le0; by Metric Space (ii) and antisymmetry of ≤\le (The Real Numbers as a Type (v)) this holds if and only if y∈Xy\in X and d(x,y)=0d(x,y)=0, and by Metric Space (iii) if and only if y=xy=x. So {x}=Bˉd(x,0)\{x\}=\bar{B}_{d}(x,0), which belongs to B(X)\mathcal{B}(X) by (iv). This proves (iii).

Open balls of the subspace. For y∈Yy\in Y and real r>0r>0 write BdY(y,r)B_{d_{Y}}(y,r) for the open ball of (Y,dY)(Y,d_{Y}). Since dY(y,z)=d(y,z)d_{Y}(y,z)=d(y,z) for z∈Yz\in Y, by Domains and Restrictions of Maps (iii) applied to dd and Y×Y⊆X×XY\times Y\subseteq X\times X, Open Ball in a Metric Space (ii), applied in (Y,dY)(Y,d_{Y}) and in (X,d)(X,d), gives

BdY(y,r)=Bd(y,r)∩Y.(1)B_{d_{Y}}(y,r)=B_{d}(y,r)\cap Y. \tag{1}

Open sets of the subspace. We prove (v).

Let VV be open in (X,d)(X,d) and U=V∩YU=V\cap Y; then U⊆YU\subseteq Y. Let y∈Uy\in U. Since y∈Vy\in V, there is a real r>0r>0 with Bd(y,r)⊆VB_{d}(y,r)\subseteq V by Open Subset of a Metric Space (i), and then BdY(y,r)=Bd(y,r)∩Y⊆V∩Y=UB_{d_{Y}}(y,r)=B_{d}(y,r)\cap Y\subseteq V\cap Y=U by (1). So UU is open in (Y,dY)(Y,d_{Y}) by Open Subset of a Metric Space (i).

Conversely, let UU be open in (Y,dY)(Y,d_{Y}). Let S={W∈Td:W∩Y⊆U}\mathcal{S}=\{W\in\mathcal{T}_{d}:W\cap Y\subseteq U\}, a subset of the set Td\mathcal{T}_{d} of The Open Sets of a Metric Space Form a Set, Given by a Predicative Formula (ii) given by a predicative condition (Sets and Maps: Ordinary Notation (iii)), and let V=⋃SV=\bigcup\mathcal{S}, the union of all open subsets WW of XX with W∩Y⊆UW\cap Y\subseteq U. Since Td\mathcal{T}_{d} is a topology on XX by The Open Subsets of a Metric Space Form a Topology (i), V∈TdV\in\mathcal{T}_{d} by Topological Space (iii); that is, VV is open in (X,d)(X,d). If z∈V∩Yz\in V\cap Y, then z∈Wz\in W for some W∈SW\in\mathcal{S}, so z∈W∩Y⊆Uz\in W\cap Y\subseteq U. If x∈Ux\in U, then x∈Yx\in Y, and since UU is open in (Y,dY)(Y,d_{Y}) there is a real r>0r>0 with BdY(x,r)⊆UB_{d_{Y}}(x,r)\subseteq U by Open Subset of a Metric Space (i). The open ball Bd(x,r)B_{d}(x,r) is open in (X,d)(X,d) by Open Ball in a Metric Space is Open (i), so Bd(x,r)∈TdB_{d}(x,r)\in\mathcal{T}_{d} by The Open Sets of a Metric Space Form a Set, Given by a Predicative Formula (ii), and Bd(x,r)∩Y=BdY(x,r)⊆UB_{d}(x,r)\cap Y=B_{d_{Y}}(x,r)\subseteq U by (1); hence Bd(x,r)∈SB_{d}(x,r)\in\mathcal{S}. As d(x,x)=0<rd(x,x)=0<r by Metric Space (iii), x∈Bd(x,r)x\in B_{d}(x,r) by Open Ball in a Metric Space (ii), so x∈Vx\in V. Hence x∈V∩Yx\in V\cap Y, and U=V∩YU=V\cap Y. This proves (v).

Traces of Borel sets are Borel in the subspace. Let G\mathcal{G} be the set of all B∈P(X)B\in\mathcal{P}(X) with B∩Y∈B(Y)B\cap Y\in\mathcal{B}(Y). We show that G\mathcal{G} is a σ\sigma-algebra on XX. First, X∩Y=YX\cap Y=Y, and Y∈B(Y)Y\in\mathcal{B}(Y) by σ-Algebra and Measurable Space (i), B(Y)\mathcal{B}(Y) being a σ\sigma-algebra on YY; so X∈GX\in\mathcal{G}. If B∈GB\in\mathcal{G}, then (X∖B)∩Y=Y∖(B∩Y)∈B(Y)(X\setminus B)\cap Y=Y\setminus(B\cap Y)\in\mathcal{B}(Y) by σ-Algebra and Measurable Space (i), so X∖B∈GX\setminus B\in\mathcal{G}. If (Bn)(B_{n}) is a sequence in G\mathcal{G}, then the sequence (Bn∩Y)(B_{n}\cap Y) in P(Y)\mathcal{P}(Y) of Sequences and Maps of Sets: Complements, Traces, Two-Term Sequences, the Disjointing Sequence, and Sequences in a Subset (ii) has all its values in B(Y)⊆P(Y)\mathcal{B}(Y)\subseteq\mathcal{P}(Y), so it is a sequence in B(Y)\mathcal{B}(Y) by Sequences and Maps of Sets: Complements, Traces, Two-Term Sequences, the Disjointing Sequence, and Sequences in a Subset (v), and

(⋃n∈NBn)∩Y=⋃n∈N(Bn∩Y)∈B(Y)\Bigl(\bigcup_{n\in\mathbb{N}}B_{n}\Bigr)\cap Y=\bigcup_{n\in\mathbb{N}}(B_{n}\cap Y)\in\mathcal{B}(Y)

by σ-Algebra and Measurable Space (i), so ⋃nBn∈G\bigcup_{n}B_{n}\in\mathcal{G}. Next, for V∈TdV\in\mathcal{T}_{d} the set V∩YV\cap Y is open in (Y,dY)(Y,d_{Y}) by (v), so V∩Y∈B(Y)V\cap Y\in\mathcal{B}(Y) by (i) applied to the metric space (Y,dY)(Y,d_{Y}); hence Td⊆G\mathcal{T}_{d}\subseteq\mathcal{G}. By Closure Properties of σ-Algebras, Intersections and Traces of σ-Algebras, and the Generated σ-Algebra (iv), B(X)=σ(Td)⊆G\mathcal{B}(X)=\sigma(\mathcal{T}_{d})\subseteq\mathcal{G}, that is,

B∩Y∈B(Y)for every B∈B(X).(2)B\cap Y\in\mathcal{B}(Y)\qquad\text{for every }B\in\mathcal{B}(X). \tag{2}

The trace of the Borel sets. Let C={B∩Y:B∈B(X)}\mathcal{C}=\{B\cap Y:B\in\mathcal{B}(X)\}, the image of B(X)\mathcal{B}(X) under the map B↦B∩YB\mapsto B\cap Y from B(X)\mathcal{B}(X) to P(Y)\mathcal{P}(Y) of Sequences and Maps of Sets: Complements, Traces, Two-Term Sequences, the Disjointing Sequence, and Sequences in a Subset (ii), a set by Sets and Maps: Ordinary Notation (vii) and a subset of P(Y)\mathcal{P}(Y), and let σY(C)\sigma_{Y}(\mathcal{C}) be the σ\sigma-algebra on YY generated by C\mathcal{C}. By (2), C⊆B(Y)\mathcal{C}\subseteq\mathcal{B}(Y), so σY(C)⊆B(Y)\sigma_{Y}(\mathcal{C})\subseteq\mathcal{B}(Y) by Closure Properties of σ-Algebras, Intersections and Traces of σ-Algebras, and the Generated σ-Algebra (iv). If U∈TdYU\in\mathcal{T}_{d_{Y}}, then U=V∩YU=V\cap Y for some VV open in (X,d)(X,d) by (v), and V∈B(X)V\in\mathcal{B}(X) by (i), so U∈CU\in\mathcal{C}. Thus TdY⊆C\mathcal{T}_{d_{Y}}\subseteq\mathcal{C}, and B(Y)=σ(TdY)⊆σY(C)\mathcal{B}(Y)=\sigma(\mathcal{T}_{d_{Y}})\subseteq\sigma_{Y}(\mathcal{C}) by Closure Properties of σ-Algebras, Intersections and Traces of σ-Algebras, and the Generated σ-Algebra (v). Hence B(Y)=σY(C)\mathcal{B}(Y)=\sigma_{Y}(\mathcal{C}), which with (2) proves (vi).

A Borel subspace. Suppose Y∈B(X)Y\in\mathcal{B}(X), and let A={B∈B(X):B⊆Y}\mathcal{A}=\{B\in\mathcal{B}(X):B\subseteq Y\}. By Closure Properties of σ-Algebras, Intersections and Traces of σ-Algebras, and the Generated σ-Algebra (xi), applied to the σ\sigma-algebra B(X)\mathcal{B}(X) on XX and the map B↦B∩YB\mapsto B\cap Y on B(X)\mathcal{B}(X) of Sequences and Maps of Sets: Complements, Traces, Two-Term Sequences, the Disjointing Sequence, and Sequences in a Subset (ii) (a map into P(Y)⊆P(X)\mathcal{P}(Y)\subseteq\mathcal{P}(X), with the same values, hence the same image), {B∩Y:B∈B(X)}=A\{B\cap Y:B\in\mathcal{B}(X)\}=\mathcal{A} and A\mathcal{A} is a σ\sigma-algebra on YY. Each B∈AB\in\mathcal{A} equals B∩YB\cap Y, so A⊆B(Y)\mathcal{A}\subseteq\mathcal{B}(Y) by (2). If U∈TdYU\in\mathcal{T}_{d_{Y}}, then U=V∩YU=V\cap Y for some VV open in (X,d)(X,d) by (v), V∈B(X)V\in\mathcal{B}(X) by (i), so U∈B(X)U\in\mathcal{B}(X) by Closure Properties of σ-Algebras, Intersections and Traces of σ-Algebras, and the Generated σ-Algebra (ix), and U⊆YU\subseteq Y; thus U∈AU\in\mathcal{A}. Hence TdY⊆A\mathcal{T}_{d_{Y}}\subseteq\mathcal{A} and B(Y)⊆A\mathcal{B}(Y)\subseteq\mathcal{A} by Closure Properties of σ-Algebras, Intersections and Traces of σ-Algebras, and the Generated σ-Algebra (iv), so B(Y)=A={B∩Y:B∈B(X)}\mathcal{B}(Y)=\mathcal{A}=\{B\cap Y:B\in\mathcal{B}(X)\}. This proves (vii).
