Builds the formula from the predicative formulas for maps, segments and ordered pairs, as in the construction for iterated operations, checks that it holds exactly when the recursion does, and moves it to arbitrary positions by renaming.

Proof

Throughout, formulas are written with abbreviations as in Formulas of the Language of Class Theory, Free Variables, Predicative Formulas and Abbreviations (vi), and the given x0,…,xnβˆ’1x_{0},\dots,x_{n-1} are the first of distinct set variables x0,x1,…x_{0},x_{1},\dots as in Renaming and Substituting Variables in Predicative Formulas, so that x0,…,x4x_{0},\dots,x_{4} are distinct also when n<5n<5. The parameters N\mathbb{N}, ≀\le and ++ of the statement are distinct class variables YY, RR and PP, at their fixed values as in Conditions Expressed by a Predicative Formula, and Guards (i). Elements of N0\mathbb{N}_{0} assigned to variables occur in the formulas below only to the left of ∈\in or inside ordered pairs, as The Natural Numbers and the Natural Numbers with Zero: Arithmetic, Order, Induction and Recursion (iii) requires.

The formula. The formula is adapted from the published proof of Iterated Operations Are Given by a Predicative Formula. Let cc, zz, ww, oo, tt, rr, qq, uu, bb and vv be distinct set variables other than x0,x1,…x_{0},x_{1},\dots. By Predicativity under Renaming of Set Variables by Variables, of Formulas with Ordered Pairs, and of Formulas for Relations, Functions, Maps, Injectivity, Surjectivity and Bijectivity (ii), Predicativity under Renaming of Set Variables by Variables, of Formulas with Ordered Pairs, and of Formulas for Relations, Functions, Maps, Injectivity, Surjectivity and Bijectivity (iii) and Predicativity under Renaming of Set Variables by Variables, of Formulas with Ordered Pairs, and of Formulas for Relations, Functions, Maps, Injectivity, Surjectivity and Bijectivity (iv), each formula w=(u,v)w=(u,v), (t1,t2)∈t3(t_{1},t_{2})\in t_{3} and ((t1,t2),t3)∈t4((t_{1},t_{2}),t_{3})\in t_{4} written below is predicative and, when sets are assigned to the variables inside the pairs, holds if and only if the corresponding equation or membership of ordered pairs holds. Let seg(z,x2)\mathrm{seg}(z,x_{2}) be the formula of Induction over Finite Sets, and Predicative Formulas for the Segments [n] and for Finiteness (i) for the set variables zz, x2x_{2} and the class variables YY, RR. Let ΞΌ\mu be the formula of Predicativity under Renaming of Set Variables by Variables, of Formulas with Ordered Pairs, and of Formulas for Relations, Functions, Maps, Injectivity, Surjectivity and Bijectivity (vii), written below as ΞΌ(x1,c,x0)\mu(x_{1},c,x_{0}), ΞΌ(x3,z,x0)\mu(x_{3},z,x_{0}) and ΞΌ(x4,z,x0)\mu(x_{4},z,x_{0}) with these variables in place of its three displayed variables, and with distinct set variables h1,…,h5h_{1},\dots,h_{5}, other than all the variables named so far, in place of its bound variables pp, uu, uβ€²u', vv and vβ€²v', so that the distinctness required there holds. Let

Ξ²=βˆƒc (βˆ€w (w∈cβ‡”βˆƒuβ€‰βˆƒv (u∈x0∧v∈x0∧w=(u,v)))∧μ(x1,c,x0)),\beta=\exists c\,\Bigl(\forall w\,\bigl(w\in c\Leftrightarrow\exists u\,\exists v\,(u\in x_{0}\wedge v\in x_{0}\wedge w=(u,v))\bigr)\wedge\mu(x_{1},c,x_{0})\Bigr), Ξ»(o)=o∈Yβˆ§βˆ€t (t∈Yβ‡’(o,t)∈R),ρ1=βˆƒoβ€‰βˆƒu (Ξ»(o)∧(o,u)∈x3∧(o,u)∈x4),\lambda(o)=o\in Y\wedge\forall t\,\bigl(t\in Y\Rightarrow(o,t)\in R\bigr),\qquad\rho_{1}=\exists o\,\exists u\,\bigl(\lambda(o)\wedge(o,u)\in x_{3}\wedge(o,u)\in x_{4}\bigr), ρ2=βˆ€rβ€‰βˆ€qβ€‰βˆ€oβ€‰βˆ€uβ€‰βˆ€bβ€‰βˆ€v ((r∈z∧q∈z∧λ(o)∧((r,o),q)∈P∧(r,u)∈x4∧(q,b)∈x3∧((u,b),v)∈x1)β‡’(q,v)∈x4),\rho_{2}=\forall r\,\forall q\,\forall o\,\forall u\,\forall b\,\forall v\,\Bigl(\bigl(r\in z\wedge q\in z\wedge\lambda(o)\wedge((r,o),q)\in P\wedge(r,u)\in x_{4}\wedge(q,b)\in x_{3}\wedge((u,b),v)\in x_{1}\bigr)\Rightarrow(q,v)\in x_{4}\Bigr),

and

ψ=β∧x2∈Yβˆ§βˆƒz (seg(z,x2)∧μ(x3,z,x0)∧μ(x4,z,x0)∧ρ1∧ρ2).\psi=\beta\wedge x_{2}\in Y\wedge\exists z\,\bigl(\mathrm{seg}(z,x_{2})\wedge\mu(x_{3},z,x_{0})\wedge\mu(x_{4},z,x_{0})\wedge\rho_{1}\wedge\rho_{2}\bigr).

Its parts are predicative, and the rest adds only atomic formulas, connectives and quantifiers over set variables; so ψ\psi is predicative by Predicativity of Expressions with Abbreviations, and Symbol-Free Forms of the Basic Defined Set Symbols (i), and its free variables are among x0,…,x4x_{0},\dots,x_{4}, YY, RR and PP.

Reading the parts. Assign sets XX, FF, NN, aa and ss to x0,…,x4x_{0},\dots,x_{4}. Five facts are used.

(a) Ξ²\beta holds if and only if FF is a binary operation on XX. For every set cc, the first conjunct of Ξ²\beta holds if and only if c=XΓ—Xc=X\times X, by Predicativity of Expressions with Abbreviations, and Symbol-Free Forms of the Basic Defined Set Symbols (viii) applied to the class abstraction XΓ—XX\times X of The Cartesian Product of Two Classes (i); and XΓ—XX\times X is a set by Membership in a Cartesian Product, and the Cartesian Product of Two Sets Is a Set (ii). So Ξ²\beta holds if and only if ΞΌ(x1,c,x0)\mu(x_{1},c,x_{0}) holds with cc assigned XΓ—XX\times X, that is, by Predicativity under Renaming of Set Variables by Variables, of Formulas with Ordered Pairs, and of Formulas for Relations, Functions, Maps, Injectivity, Surjectivity and Bijectivity (vii), if and only if FF is a map XΓ—Xβ†’XX\times X\to X, a binary operation on XX by Binary Operations on a Set (i). Also, x2∈Yx_{2}\in Y holds if and only if N∈NN\in\mathbb{N}.

Since Ξ²\beta and x2∈Yx_{2}\in Y are conjuncts of ψ\psi, and the corresponding conditions are conjuncts of the condition of the statement, it remains to show, assuming that FF is a binary operation βˆ—\ast on XX and N∈NN\in\mathbb{N}, that the last conjunct of ψ\psi holds if and only if aa and ss are maps [N]β†’X[N]\to X with s(1)=a(1)s(1)=a(1) and s(r+1)=s(r)βˆ—a(r+1)s(r+1)=s(r)\ast a(r+1) for every r∈[N]r\in[N] with r<Nr<N. Note 1∈[N]1\in[N].

(b) For every set oo, Ξ»(o)\lambda(o) holds if and only if o=1o=1: by The Order on Omega (i), Ξ»(o)\lambda(o) says that o∈No\in\mathbb{N} and o≀to\le t for every t∈Nt\in\mathbb{N}, and 11 is the least natural number; a least element is unique, since o≀1o\le1 and 1≀o1\le o give o=1o=1 by Order and Arithmetic of β„•β‚€ in Flat Form (i), so Ξ»(o)\lambda(o) implies o=1o=1.

(c) For every set zz, seg(z,N)\mathrm{seg}(z,N) holds if and only if z=[N]z=[N], by Induction over Finite Sets, and Predicative Formulas for the Segments [n] and for Finiteness (i), as N∈NβŠ†N0N\in\mathbb{N}\subseteq\mathbb{N}_{0}; and ΞΌ(x3,z,x0)\mu(x_{3},z,x_{0}), respectively ΞΌ(x4,z,x0)\mu(x_{4},z,x_{0}), holds if and only if aa, respectively ss, is a map zβ†’Xz\to X, by Predicativity under Renaming of Set Variables by Variables, of Formulas with Ordered Pairs, and of Formulas for Relations, Functions, Maps, Injectivity, Surjectivity and Bijectivity (vii).

(d) For r∈N0r\in\mathbb{N}_{0} and every set qq, ((r,1),q)∈+((r,1),q)\in{+} if and only if q=r+1q=r+1; and for u,b∈Xu,b\in X and every set vv, ((u,b),v)βˆˆβˆ—((u,b),v)\in{\ast} if and only if v=uβˆ—bv=u\ast b. Both are Predicativity of Expressions with Abbreviations, and Symbol-Free Forms of the Basic Defined Set Symbols (xi), for the binary operation ++ on N0\mathbb{N}_{0} (The Natural Numbers and the Natural Numbers with Zero: Arithmetic, Order, Induction and Recursion (iv)) and for βˆ—\ast on XX.

(e) For a map g:[N]β†’Xg:[N]\to X, every r∈[N]r\in[N] and every set uu, (r,u)∈g(r,u)\in g if and only if u=g(r)u=g(r), by Predicativity of Expressions with Abbreviations, and Symbol-Free Forms of the Basic Defined Set Symbols (x), and then u∈Xu\in X. Moreover, for r∈[N]r\in[N], r+1∈[N]r+1\in[N] if and only if r<Nr<N.

If the last conjunct of ψ\psi holds. There is a set zz satisfying its five conjuncts. By (c), z=[N]z=[N] and aa and ss are maps [N]β†’X[N]\to X. By ρ1\rho_{1} there are sets oo and uu with Ξ»(o)\lambda(o), (o,u)∈a(o,u)\in a and (o,u)∈s(o,u)\in s; so o=1o=1 by (b), and u=a(1)u=a(1) and u=s(1)u=s(1) by (e), whence s(1)=a(1)s(1)=a(1). Let r∈[N]r\in[N] with r<Nr<N, so r+1∈[N]r+1\in[N] by (e); put u=s(r)u=s(r) and b=a(r+1)b=a(r+1), both in XX by (e), and v=uβˆ—bv=u\ast b. Then r∈zr\in z, r+1∈zr+1\in z, Ξ»(1)\lambda(1) by (b), ((r,1),r+1)∈+((r,1),r+1)\in{+} and ((u,b),v)βˆˆβˆ—((u,b),v)\in{\ast} by (d), and (r,u)∈s(r,u)\in s and (r+1,b)∈a(r+1,b)\in a by (e); so ρ2\rho_{2}, applied to rr, r+1r+1, 11, uu, bb and vv, gives (r+1,v)∈s(r+1,v)\in s, that is, s(r+1)=s(r)βˆ—a(r+1)s(r+1)=s(r)\ast a(r+1) by (e).

If the recursion holds. Let aa and ss be maps [N]β†’X[N]\to X with s(1)=a(1)s(1)=a(1) and s(r+1)=s(r)βˆ—a(r+1)s(r+1)=s(r)\ast a(r+1) for every r∈[N]r\in[N] with r<Nr<N, and take the set [N][N] for zz. Then seg([N],N)\mathrm{seg}([N],N), ΞΌ(x3,[N],x0)\mu(x_{3},[N],x_{0}) and ΞΌ(x4,[N],x0)\mu(x_{4},[N],x_{0}) hold by (c). For ρ1\rho_{1}, take 11 and a(1)a(1) for oo and uu: Ξ»(1)\lambda(1) holds by (b), and (1,a(1))∈a(1,a(1))\in a and (1,a(1))∈s(1,a(1))\in s by (e), as s(1)=a(1)s(1)=a(1). For ρ2\rho_{2}, let rr, qq, oo, uu, bb and vv be sets satisfying its hypotheses. Then r,q∈[N]r,q\in[N], so r∈N0r\in\mathbb{N}_{0}; o=1o=1 by (b), so q=r+1q=r+1 by (d); u=s(r)u=s(r) and b=a(r+1)b=a(r+1), both in XX, by (e); and v=uβˆ—bv=u\ast b by (d). As r+1∈[N]r+1\in[N], r<Nr<N by (e), so v=s(r)βˆ—a(r+1)=s(r+1)v=s(r)\ast a(r+1)=s(r+1), and (q,v)∈s(q,v)\in s by (e). So the last conjunct of ψ\psi holds.

Hence, under every assignment of sets to x0,…,x4x_{0},\dots,x_{4}, ψ\psi holds if and only if x1x_{1} is a binary operation on x0x_{0}, x2∈Nx_{2}\in\mathbb{N}, x3x_{3} and x4x_{4} are maps [x2]β†’x0[x_{2}]\to x_{0}, x4(1)=x3(1)x_{4}(1)=x_{3}(1), and x4(r+1)=x4(r)βˆ—x3(r+1)x_{4}(r+1)=x_{4}(r)\ast x_{3}(r+1) for every r∈[x2]r\in[x_{2}] with r<x2r<x_{2}, with βˆ—\ast the operation x1x_{1}; so ψ\psi is a predicative formula in x0,…,x4x_{0},\dots,x_{4} in the sense of Renaming and Substituting Variables in Predicative Formulas.

Any positions. By Renaming and Substituting Variables in Predicative Formulas (i), applied to ψ\psi with five variables and Οƒ(0)=i\sigma(0)=i, Οƒ(1)=j\sigma(1)=j, Οƒ(2)=k\sigma(2)=k, Οƒ(3)=l\sigma(3)=l and Οƒ(4)=m\sigma(4)=m, the formula ψ(xi,xj,xk,xl,xm)\psi(x_{i},x_{j},x_{k},x_{l},x_{m}) is a predicative formula in x0,…,xnβˆ’1x_{0},\dots,x_{n-1} that holds, under every assignment of sets to x0,…,xnβˆ’1x_{0},\dots,x_{n-1}, exactly when the condition of the statement holds. This proves (i).
