A general composition step shows that a term whose value is a set given by a predicative formula in the values of typed terms is itself typed; each clause then exhibits such a formula, for the preimage, the union and intersection, the supremum and infimum, and the four superlevel sets.

Proof

Throughout, the parameters have their fixed values, as in Conditions Expressed by a Predicative Formula, and Guards (i). The set variables form an infinite list (Formulas of the Language of Class Theory, Free Variables, Predicative Formulas and Abbreviations (i)), so as many distinct set variables as needed can be chosen outside any finitely many given formulas, terms and variables. Every formula formed below applies no quantifier to a class variable, ordered pairs in it being as in Predicativity under Renaming of Set Variables by Variables, of Formulas with Ordered Pairs, and of Formulas for Relations, Functions, Maps, Injectivity, Surjectivity and Bijectivity (iii), so it is predicative by Predicativity of Expressions with Abbreviations, and Symbol-Free Forms of the Basic Defined Set Symbols (i). In (i), (iii) and (v), once the map is obtained, the term is a value of a map at a term: if F:A×B→CF:A\times B\to C is a map, the value of a parameter, and ss and tt are terms of types AA and BB under γ\gamma, then (s,t)(s,t) is a term of type A×BA\times B under γ\gamma by Typed Terms under a Predicative Guard: Variables, Parameters, Values of Maps and Ordered Pairs, and Predicative Equations and Memberships between Them (iv), and F(s,t)F(s,t) is a term of type CC under γ\gamma by Typed Terms under a Predicative Guard: Variables, Parameters, Values of Maps and Ordered Pairs, and Predicative Equations and Memberships between Them (iii), whose value is the value of FF at the pair of the values of ss and tt. We refer to this as (V).

Proof of (i). The classes TST^{S}, P(T)\mathcal{P}(T) and P(S)\mathcal{P}(S) are sets by The Elements of the Class of Functions from a Set to a Set, and This Class Is a Set (ii) and The Union Set and the Power Set of a Set (ii). Let f∈TSf\in T^{S} and V∈P(T)V\in\mathcal{P}(T); then ff is a map S→TS\to T by The Elements of the Class of Functions from a Set to a Set, and This Class Is a Set (i). By Preimages under a Map: Membership, the Preimage Map, Sequences of Preimages, and the Set of Sets with Preimage in a Given Set (i), applied to the map ff with a set variable ff for its variable uu, the expression f−1(V)f^{-1}(V) is a defined set symbol with the arguments ff and VV, given by the formula π\pi there and used properly at every such ff and every set VV, and f−1(V)f^{-1}(V) is a subset of SS, hence an element of P(S)\mathcal{P}(S) by The Union Set and the Power Set of a Set (ii). So Maps and Relations Given by Formulas (ii), with P(S)\mathcal{P}(S), TST^{S} and P(T)\mathcal{P}(T) for its bb, cc and dd and the expression f−1(V)f^{-1}(V), gives exactly one map preS,T\mathrm{pre}_{S,T} as stated. By (V), u−1(B)=preS,T(u,B)u^{-1}(B)=\mathrm{pre}_{S,T}(u,B) is a term of type P(S)\mathcal{P}(S) under γ\gamma, with the value f−1(V)f^{-1}(V) for the values ff of uu and VV of BB.

Proof of (ii). The guard. Let yy be a set variable that is none of x1,…,xkx_{1},\dots,x_{k} and ii, is not free in γ\gamma and does not occur in II. By Terms and Typed Terms under a Guard (iv) a predicative formula ψI\psi_{I} expresses γ∧y=I\gamma\wedge y=I; by Conditions Expressed by a Predicative Formula, and Guards (ii) its free variables are among x1,…,xkx_{1},\dots,x_{k}, yy and the parameters of γ\gamma and II, so ii is not free in it. The formula ∃y (ψI∧i∈y)\exists y\,(\psi_{I}\wedge i\in y) is predicative, its free variables are among x1,…,xkx_{1},\dots,x_{k}, ii and the parameters of γ\gamma and II, and under an assignment of sets to x1,…,xkx_{1},\dots,x_{k} and ii it holds if and only if γ\gamma holds and the set assigned to ii lies in the value of II, by Locality of Predicative Formulas: Truth Depends Only on the Values of the Free Variables (i). So it is a guard expressing γ∧i∈I\gamma\wedge i\in I.

A formula for tt. Let ww and vv be distinct set variables that are none of x1,…,xkx_{1},\dots,x_{k} and ii and occur in none of γ\gamma, γ′\gamma', II and tt. By Terms and Typed Terms under a Guard (iv), for the variables x1,…,xk,ix_{1},\dots,x_{k},i and the guard γ′\gamma', a predicative formula φ\varphi expresses γ′∧w=t\gamma'\wedge w=t; its free variables are among x1,…,xkx_{1},\dots,x_{k}, ii, ww and the parameters of γ′\gamma' and tt, by Conditions Expressed by a Predicative Formula, and Guards (ii), and the parameters of γ′\gamma' are among those of γ\gamma and II. Fix an assignment of sets to x1,…,xkx_{1},\dots,x_{k} satisfying γ\gamma. For all sets aa and bb, with aa assigned to ii and bb to ww, and whatever further sets are assigned to variables not free in φ\varphi (Locality of Predicative Formulas: Truth Depends Only on the Values of the Free Variables (i)), φ\varphi holds if and only if γ′\gamma' holds and b=t(a)b=t(a), that is, as γ′\gamma' expresses γ∧i∈I\gamma\wedge i\in I, if and only if a∈Ia\in I and b=t(a)b=t(a). We refer to this as (1).

Values. Under that assignment the value II is a set, a subset of ZZ, by Terms and Typed Terms under a Guard (iii) and The Union Set and the Power Set of a Set (ii), and for a∈Ia\in I the assignment of aa to ii satisfies γ′\gamma', so t(a)t(a) is a set in P(X)\mathcal{P}(X), a subset of XX. By (1), the class of the sets lying in t(a)t(a) for some a∈Ia\in I is the class U={v:∃i ∃w (φ∧v∈w)}U=\{v:\exists i\,\exists w\,(\varphi\wedge v\in w)\}, and, when I≠∅I\neq\emptyset, the class of the sets lying in t(a)t(a) for every a∈Ia\in I is N={v:∀i ∀w (φ⇒v∈w)}N=\{v:\forall i\,\forall w\,(\varphi\Rightarrow v\in w)\}, both formed by Class Abstraction: the Class of All Sets Satisfying a Predicative Formula (i) with x1,…,xkx_{1},\dots,x_{k} at their sets. These classes are determined by the sets assigned to x1,…,xkx_{1},\dots,x_{k} and the values of the parameters, so the expression ⋃i∈It\bigcup_{i\in I}t with the value UU, and, when the value of II is nonempty under every assignment satisfying γ\gamma, the expression ⋂i∈It\bigcap_{i\in I}t with the value NN, are terms under γ\gamma (Terms and Typed Terms under a Guard (i)); these are the terms of the clause. Each element of UU lies in some t(a)⊆Xt(a)\subseteq X, and, if a0∈Ia_{0}\in I, each element of NN lies in t(a0)⊆Xt(a_{0})\subseteq X; so UU, and NN when I≠∅I\neq\emptyset, are subclasses of XX, hence sets by Subclasses of Sets Are Sets, the Union and Power Set of a Set Exist Uniquely, Binary Unions of Sets Are Sets, and the Universal Class Is Proper (i), and elements of P(X)\mathcal{P}(X) by The Union Set and the Power Set of a Set (ii). So Terms and Typed Terms under a Guard (iii) holds for both terms. For a family (Aa)a∈I(A_{a})_{a\in I} with Aa=t(a)A_{a}=t(a), UU and NN have the same elements as ⋃a∈IAa\bigcup_{a\in I}A_{a} and ⋂a∈IAa\bigcap_{a\in I}A_{a} by Indexed Families of Sets and Their Union, Intersection and Product (ii) and Indexed Families of Sets and Their Union, Intersection and Product (iii), so they are these classes by Axiom of Extensionality for Classes.

The formulas. Let zz be a set variable that is none of x1,…,xkx_{1},\dots,x_{k}, is not free in γ\gamma and does not occur in ⋃i∈It\bigcup_{i\in I}t, respectively ⋂i∈It\bigcap_{i\in I}t; so zz is not ii and occurs neither in II nor in tt, and we may choose ww and vv above other than zz. Then zz is not free in γ′\gamma', which expresses a condition whose parameters are those of γ\gamma and II, nor in φ\varphi. Let ψ∪\psi_{\cup} be γ∧∀v (v∈z⇔∃i ∃w (φ∧v∈w))\gamma\wedge\forall v\,\bigl(v\in z\Leftrightarrow\exists i\,\exists w\,(\varphi\wedge v\in w)\bigr) and ψ∩\psi_{\cap} be γ∧∀v (v∈z⇔∀i ∀w (φ⇒v∈w))\gamma\wedge\forall v\,\bigl(v\in z\Leftrightarrow\forall i\,\forall w\,(\varphi\Rightarrow v\in w)\bigr). They are predicative, and their free variables are among x1,…,xkx_{1},\dots,x_{k}, zz and the parameters of γ\gamma, II and tt. Under an assignment of sets to x1,…,xkx_{1},\dots,x_{k} and zz, if γ\gamma fails both fail; if γ\gamma holds, then by (1) ψ∪\psi_{\cup} holds if and only if zz has the same elements as UU, and, when I≠∅I\neq\emptyset, ψ∩\psi_{\cap} holds if and only if zz has the same elements as NN, that is, by Axiom of Extensionality for Classes, if and only if zz is the value of ⋃i∈It\bigcup_{i\in I}t, respectively ⋂i∈It\bigcap_{i\in I}t. So ψ∪\psi_{\cup} expresses γ∧z=⋃i∈It\gamma\wedge z=\bigcup_{i\in I}t, and, when the value of II is nonempty under every assignment satisfying γ\gamma, ψ∩\psi_{\cap} expresses γ∧z=⋂i∈It\gamma\wedge z=\bigcap_{i\in I}t. By Terms and Typed Terms under a Guard (ii), both terms are of type P(X)\mathcal{P}(X) under γ\gamma, the second under that hypothesis.

Proof of (iii). P(X)\mathcal{P}(X) is a set by The Union Set and the Power Set of a Set (ii). For sets vv and ww, v∪wv\cup w, v∩wv\cap w and v∖wv\setminus w are sets by Sets and Maps: Ordinary Notation (iv), and by Predicativity of Expressions with Abbreviations, and Symbol-Free Forms of the Basic Defined Set Symbols (ix) each is the only set zz satisfying the predicative formula given there; so they are defined set symbols with the arguments vv and ww, used properly at all sets vv and ww. For v,w∈P(X)v,w\in\mathcal{P}(X), vv and ww are subsets of XX by The Union Set and the Power Set of a Set (ii), and by The Boolean Operations on Classes, Disjointness, and the Universal Class (i) each element of v∪wv\cup w, v∩wv\cap w or v∖wv\setminus w lies in vv or in ww, hence in XX; so these sets lie in P(X)\mathcal{P}(X). By Maps and Relations Given by Formulas (ii), with P(X)\mathcal{P}(X) for its bb, cc and dd, there is exactly one map ∪X\cup_{X}, ∩X\cap_{X}, respectively ∖X\setminus_{X}, as stated. By (V), A∪BA\cup B, A∩BA\cap B and A∖BA\setminus B are terms of type P(X)\mathcal{P}(X) under γ\gamma, with the values stated.

Proof of (iv). By Order and Suprema in the Extended Real Line (i), ≤\le is a total order on the set [−∞,∞][-\infty,\infty], hence a partial order by Partial and Total Orders on a Set and the Associated Strict Relation (ii). Every e∈P([−∞,∞])e\in\mathcal{P}([-\infty,\infty]) is a subset of [−∞,∞][-\infty,\infty] by The Union Set and the Power Set of a Set (ii), and it has a supremum and an infimum in [−∞,∞][-\infty,\infty] by Order and Suprema in the Extended Real Line (iii). So Predicative Formulas for Suprema and Infima, and Maps Defined by Suprema and Infima (iii), with [−∞,∞][-\infty,\infty] and ≤\le for its pp and ⪯\preceq, P([−∞,∞])\mathcal{P}([-\infty,\infty]) for its aa and the variable uu itself for its expression t(u)t(u), gives exactly one map Sup\mathrm{Sup} and exactly one map Inf\mathrm{Inf} as stated. By Typed Terms under a Predicative Guard: Variables, Parameters, Values of Maps and Ordered Pairs, and Predicative Equations and Memberships between Them (iii), Sup(E)\mathrm{Sup}(E) and Inf(E)\mathrm{Inf}(E) are terms of type [−∞,∞][-\infty,\infty] under γ\gamma. For the image: every subset of BB is a subset of [−∞,∞][-\infty,\infty], hence an element of P([−∞,∞])\mathcal{P}([-\infty,\infty]) by The Union Set and the Power Set of a Set (ii), so Images of Typed Terms: the Set of Values {t:u∈D}\{t:u\in D\} Is a Set, Finite when DD Is Finite, and a Typed Term (iv) applies with P([−∞,∞])\mathcal{P}([-\infty,\infty]) for its CC.

Proof of (v). CC and C′C' are sets by Subclasses of Sets Are Sets, the Union and Power Set of a Set Exist Uniquely, Binary Unions of Sets Are Sets, and the Universal Class Is Proper (i), so CXC^{X} is a set by The Elements of the Class of Functions from a Set to a Set, and This Class Is a Set (ii), and P(X)\mathcal{P}(X) is a set. Let XX and LL also denote class variables whose values are XX and the order ≤\le of [−∞,∞][-\infty,\infty], a set by The Extended Real Line, Its Order, and [0,∞] (iii). By The Extended Real Line, Its Order, and [0,∞] (iii), for p,q∈[−∞,∞]p,q\in[-\infty,\infty]: q≥pq\ge p means (p,q)∈≤(p,q)\in{\le}; q>pq>p means (p,q)∈≤(p,q)\in{\le} and q≠pq\neq p; q≤pq\le p means (q,p)∈≤(q,p)\in{\le}; and q<pq<p means (q,p)∈≤(q,p)\in{\le} and q≠pq\neq p. Let ff, cc, zz, ww and vv be distinct set variables, and let β(v,c)\beta(v,c) be the corresponding one of the formulas (c,v)∈L∧¬ v=c(c,v)\in L\wedge\neg\,v=c, (c,v)∈L(c,v)\in L, (v,c)∈L∧¬ v=c(v,c)\in L\wedge\neg\,v=c and (v,c)∈L(v,c)\in L, for >>, ≥\ge, << and ≤\le respectively; for q,c∈[−∞,∞]q,c\in[-\infty,\infty], β(q,c)\beta(q,c) holds if and only if q>cq>c, q≥cq\ge c, q<cq<c, respectively q≤cq\le c. Let θ(z,f,c)\theta(z,f,c) be the formula ∀w (w∈z⇔(w∈X∧∃v ((w,v)∈f∧β(v,c))))\forall w\,\bigl(w\in z\Leftrightarrow(w\in X\wedge\exists v\,((w,v)\in f\wedge\beta(v,c)))\bigr). Let f∈CXf\in C^{X} and c∈C′c\in C'; ff is a map X→CX\to C by The Elements of the Class of Functions from a Set to a Set, and This Class Is a Set (i), so f(x)∈[−∞,∞]f(x)\in[-\infty,\infty] for x∈Xx\in X. The class {x∈X:β(f(x),c)}\{x\in X:\beta(f(x),c)\}, which is the set {x∈X:f(x)>c}\{x\in X:f(x)>c\}, {x∈X:f(x)≥c}\{x\in X:f(x)\ge c\}, {x∈X:f(x)<c}\{x\in X:f(x)<c\}, respectively {x∈X:f(x)≤c}\{x\in X:f(x)\le c\}, is a subset of XX and a set by Sets and Maps: Ordinary Notation (iii), so an element of P(X)\mathcal{P}(X). For w∈X=dom⁡fw\in X=\operatorname{dom}f, ∃v ((w,v)∈f∧β(v,c))\exists v\,((w,v)\in f\wedge\beta(v,c)) holds if and only if β(f(w),c)\beta(f(w),c), by Predicative Substitution of Values of Functions and Binary Operations, and Predicative Formulas for Negatives, Differences, Absolute Values, Distances, Reciprocals and Quotients in an Ordered Field (i). So θ(z,f,c)\theta(z,f,c) holds if and only if zz has the same elements as that set, that is, by Axiom of Extensionality for Classes, if and only if zz is that set. Hence that set is a defined set symbol with the arguments ff and cc, given by θ\theta and used properly at all f∈CXf\in C^{X} and c∈C′c\in C', and Maps and Relations Given by Formulas (ii), with P(X)\mathcal{P}(X), CXC^{X} and C′C' for its bb, cc and dd, gives exactly one map Λ>\Lambda_{>}, Λ≥\Lambda_{\ge}, Λ<\Lambda_{<}, respectively Λ≤\Lambda_{\le}, as stated. By (V), each of the four terms is of type P(X)\mathcal{P}(X) under γ\gamma. The last sentence of the clause holds as [0,∞]⊆[−∞,∞][0,\infty]\subseteq[-\infty,\infty] by The Extended Real Line, Its Order, and [0,∞] (ii), Q⊆R\mathbb{Q}\subseteq\mathbb{R} under The Real Numbers, with the Natural Numbers, Integers and Rationals Identified with Subsets of the Reals, and Completeness (v), and R⊆[−∞,∞]\mathbb{R}\subseteq[-\infty,\infty] by The Extended Real Line, Its Order, and [0,∞] (ii), together with Order and Suprema in the Extended Real Line (i).

Proof of (vi). Let ww be a set variable that is none of x1,…,xkx_{1},\dots,x_{k} and ii, is not free in γ\gamma and does not occur in tt. By Terms and Typed Terms under a Guard (iv), for the variables x1,…,xk,ix_{1},\dots,x_{k},i and the guard γ∧i∈D\gamma\wedge i\in D, a predicative formula φ\varphi expresses γ∧i∈D∧w=t\gamma\wedge i\in D\wedge w=t; its free variables are among x1,…,xkx_{1},\dots,x_{k}, ii, ww, DD and the parameters of γ\gamma and tt. Fix an assignment of sets to x1,…,xkx_{1},\dots,x_{k} satisfying γ\gamma. For all sets aa and bb, with aa assigned to ii and bb to ww, and whatever sets are assigned to variables not free in φ\varphi (Locality of Predicative Formulas: Truth Depends Only on the Values of the Free Variables (i)), φ\varphi holds if and only if a∈Da\in D and b=t(a)b=t(a). We refer to this as (2).

The map. By (2), with x1,…,xkx_{1},\dots,x_{k} taken as parameters at their sets, for every a∈Da\in D exactly one set bb satisfies φ\varphi, namely t(a)t(a), which lies in CC by Terms and Typed Terms under a Guard (iii). So t(i)t(i) is a defined set symbol with the argument ii, given by φ\varphi and used properly at every i∈Di\in D, and Maps and Relations Given by Formulas (i), with DD and CC for its aa and bb, gives exactly one map h:D→Ch:D\to C with h(a)=t(a)h(a)=t(a) for every a∈Da\in D. It lies in CDC^{D} by The Elements of the Class of Functions from a Set to a Set, and This Class Is a Set (i), so Terms and Typed Terms under a Guard (iii) holds for (i↦t)(i\mapsto t) and CDC^{D}.

The formula. Let zz be a set variable that is none of x1,…,xkx_{1},\dots,x_{k}, is not free in γ\gamma and does not occur in (i↦t)(i\mapsto t); so zz is not ii and does not occur in tt, and we may choose ww other than zz, so that zz is not free in φ\varphi. Let μ(z,D,C)\mu(z,D,C) be the formula of Predicativity under Renaming of Set Variables by Variables, of Formulas with Ordered Pairs, and of Formulas for Relations, Functions, Maps, Injectivity, Surjectivity and Bijectivity (vii) with zz, DD and CC for its FF, AA and BB, its bound variables chosen outside the variables above, and let ψ\psi be

γ∧μ(z,D,C)∧∀i (i∈D⇒∃w (φ∧(i,w)∈z)).\gamma\wedge\mu(z,D,C)\wedge\forall i\,\bigl(i\in D\Rightarrow\exists w\,(\varphi\wedge(i,w)\in z)\bigr).

It is predicative, and its free variables are among x1,…,xkx_{1},\dots,x_{k}, zz and the parameters of γ\gamma and (i↦t)(i\mapsto t). Under an assignment of sets to x1,…,xkx_{1},\dots,x_{k} and zz: if γ\gamma fails, ψ\psi fails. If γ\gamma holds, then by Predicativity under Renaming of Set Variables by Variables, of Formulas with Ordered Pairs, and of Formulas for Relations, Functions, Maps, Injectivity, Surjectivity and Bijectivity (vii) and (2), ψ\psi holds if and only if zz is a map D→CD\to C with (a,t(a))∈z(a,t(a))\in z for every a∈Da\in D, that is, by Values, Restriction and Equality of a Map, and the Map u↦t(u)u\mapsto t(u) as a Defined Set Symbol (i), a map D→CD\to C with z(a)=t(a)z(a)=t(a) for every a∈Da\in D; by the uniqueness of hh, if and only if z=hz=h. So ψ\psi expresses γ∧z=(i↦t)\gamma\wedge z=(i\mapsto t), Terms and Typed Terms under a Guard (iv) holds, and (i↦t)(i\mapsto t) is a term of type CDC^{D} under γ\gamma by Terms and Typed Terms under a Guard (ii).
