The three topology conditions are checked directly, the intersection of two open sets using the ball whose radius is the minimum of the two given radii.

Proof

Every element of Td\mathcal{T}_{d} is an element of P(X)\mathcal{P}(X), so Td\mathcal{T}_{d} is a subset of P(X)\mathcal{P}(X) by Subclasses and Subsets §subclass; and by The Union Set and the Power Set of a Set §power, a set UU lies in Td\mathcal{T}_{d} if and only if U⊆XU\subseteq X and UU is open in (X,d)(X,d). We verify the three conditions of Topological Space §topology.

Condition empty-whole. The empty set ∅\emptyset has no element, so ∅⊆X\emptyset\subseteq X, and the condition of Open Subset of a Metric Space §open holds vacuously for it; thus ∅∈Td\emptyset\in\mathcal{T}_{d}. Next, X⊆XX\subseteq X. For x∈Xx\in X, the real number 11 satisfies 0<10<1 by Rules of Arithmetic and Order in an Ordered Field §squares, and Bd(x,1)B_{d}(x,1) is a subset of XX by Open Ball in a Metric Space §ball; so XX is open in (X,d)(X,d) by Open Subset of a Metric Space §open, and X∈TdX\in\mathcal{T}_{d}.

Condition unions. Let S\mathcal{S} be a subset of Td\mathcal{T}_{d} and put W=⋃SW=\bigcup\mathcal{S}, a set by The Union Set and the Power Set of a Set §union, whose elements are the sets uu with u∈Vu\in V for some V∈SV\in\mathcal{S}, by the same clause. Every V∈SV\in\mathcal{S} lies in Td\mathcal{T}_{d}, so V⊆XV\subseteq X; hence W⊆XW\subseteq X. Let x∈Wx\in W, and choose V∈SV\in\mathcal{S} with x∈Vx\in V. As VV is open in (X,d)(X,d), Open Subset of a Metric Space §open gives a real number r>0r>0 with Bd(x,r)⊆VB_{d}(x,r)\subseteq V. Every element of Bd(x,r)B_{d}(x,r) then lies in VV, which lies in S\mathcal{S}, so it lies in WW; thus Bd(x,r)⊆WB_{d}(x,r)\subseteq W. Hence WW is open in (X,d)(X,d) and W∈TdW\in\mathcal{T}_{d}.

Condition intersections. Let U,V∈TdU,V\in\mathcal{T}_{d}. By The Boolean Operations on Classes, Disjointness, and the Universal Class §operations, the elements of U∩VU\cap V are the sets lying in both UU and VV, so U∩V⊆U⊆XU\cap V\subseteq U\subseteq X; and U∩VU\cap V is a set by Sets and Maps: Ordinary Notation §sets. Let x∈U∩Vx\in U\cap V. As UU and VV are open in (X,d)(X,d), Open Subset of a Metric Space §open gives real numbers r1>0r_{1}>0 and r2>0r_{2}>0 with Bd(x,r1)⊆UB_{d}(x,r_{1})\subseteq U and Bd(x,r2)⊆VB_{d}(x,r_{2})\subseteq V. The order of R\mathbb{R} is a total order, R\mathbb{R} being an ordered field by The Real Numbers, with the Natural Numbers, Integers and Rationals Identified with Subsets of the Reals, and Completeness §reals and Ordered Fields §ordered-field; let r=min⁡{r1,r2}r=\min\{r_{1},r_{2}\} be the least element of {r1,r2}\{r_{1},r_{2}\} given by The Maximum and Minimum of Two Elements of a Total Order §exists, unique by Uniqueness of Least and Greatest Elements, Properties of the Strict Order, and Trichotomy for Total Orders §least-unique. By totality r1≤r2r_{1}\le r_{2} or r2≤r1r_{2}\le r_{1}, so r=r1r=r_{1} or r=r2r=r_{2} by The Maximum and Minimum of Two Elements of a Total Order §values; in either case r>0r>0. Let y∈Bd(x,r)y\in B_{d}(x,r); then y∈Xy\in X and d(x,y)<rd(x,y)<r by Open Ball in a Metric Space §membership. By The Maximum and Minimum of Two Elements of a Total Order §bounds, r≤r1r\le r_{1} and r≤r2r\le r_{2}, so Inequalities in an Ordered Field: Mixed Transitivity, Strict Sums, Signs, Products, Natural Numbers, Halving, Reciprocals, Absolute Values and Squares §mixed gives d(x,y)<r1d(x,y)<r_{1} and d(x,y)<r2d(x,y)<r_{2}. By Open Ball in a Metric Space §membership, y∈Bd(x,r1)⊆Uy\in B_{d}(x,r_{1})\subseteq U and y∈Bd(x,r2)⊆Vy\in B_{d}(x,r_{2})\subseteq V, so y∈U∩Vy\in U\cap V. Thus Bd(x,r)⊆U∩VB_{d}(x,r)\subseteq U\cap V, so U∩VU\cap V is open in (X,d)(X,d) and U∩V∈TdU\cap V\in\mathcal{T}_{d}.

Hence Td\mathcal{T}_{d} is a topology on XX by Topological Space §topology, and (X,Td)(X,\mathcal{T}_{d}) is a topological space by Topological Space §topological-space.
