Substitution is the renaming lemma for predicative formulas applied to a formula expressing the condition, with locality to pass between assignments; the variable and parameter clauses are special cases; extension is immediate; finiteness uses the predicative formula for finiteness at the variable .
(i). Let be a predicative formula expressing , as in Conditions Expressed by a Predicative Formula, and Guards (ii): its free variables are among and the parameters of . By Formulas of the Language of Class Theory, Free Variables, Predicative Formulas and Abbreviations (vi) we may take to be the formula obtained by eliminating its abbreviations, built by the rules of Formulas of the Language of Class Theory, Free Variables, Predicative Formulas and Abbreviations (ii). Apply Predicativity under Renaming of Set Variables by Variables, of Formulas with Ordered Pairs, and of Formulas for Relations, Functions, Maps, Injectivity, Surjectivity and Bijectivity (i) to with , the distinct set variables in place of , and in place of ; this gives the predicative formula . The free variables of other than are parameters, none of , and stay unchanged; so the free variables of are among , the parameters among and the parameters of , which are the variables and parameters of the condition on .
Let sets be assigned to , the parameters having their fixed values, and let be the value of ; each is a set, by hypothesis when is a parameter. Apply Locality of Predicative Formulas: Truth Depends Only on the Values of the Free Variables (ii) to : its free set variables, namely the parameters among and of that are set variables, with their fixed values, and those of that occur in it, play the role of the clause's ; the , , that do not occur in are its extra variables ; and the parameters that are class variables, with their fixed values, are its class variables . By that clause, the truth of under this assignment is its truth under the assignment restricted to its free variables. A set is assigned to each class variable among , since such a is a parameter with a set as its value; so by Predicativity under Renaming of Set Variables by Variables, of Formulas with Ordered Pairs, and of Formulas for Relations, Functions, Maps, Injectivity, Surjectivity and Bijectivity (i), holds if and only if holds when each , , is assigned and the parameters of keep their values. Since expresses and are sets, this holds if and only if . Thus expresses .
(ii). For the variable is one of , since , and its value under an assignment of sets to is the set assigned to . So this is the case of (i) in which every is a variable.
(iii). Apply (i) with in place of , in place of , for and , a parameter whose value is a set. Under an assignment of sets to the value of is the set assigned to for , and that of is ; so the condition is , which is therefore expressed by a predicative formula.
(iv). The assignment gives the set for and the set ; so for the value of is one of the sets , and the assignment is one of sets to in the sense of Conditions Expressed by a Predicative Formula, and Guards (i).
(v). Let . By Induction over Finite Sets, and Predicative Formulas for the Segments [n] and for Finiteness (ii), applied with the set variable in place of and with , and assigned , and , there is a predicative formula , whose free variables are among , , and , such that for every set , holds when is assigned to if and only if is finite. Replacing by is a renaming of a set variable, which introduces no parameters; so the parameters of , as a formula on , are among , and , which are class variables and so none of . Let sets be assigned to . By Locality of Predicative Formulas: Truth Depends Only on the Values of the Free Variables (ii), applied with as the only free set variable of and the other variables among as the further set variables, holds under this assignment if and only if it holds when is assigned to , that is, if and only if is finite. So expresses the condition " is finite" on .
