Convex Function on a Convex Subset of Rn\mathbb{R}^n

A real-valued function on a convex subset of RnR^n is convex if its value at every point of a segment is at most the corresponding combination of its values at the endpoints.

Statement

In the setting of Convex Functions on Rn\mathbb{R}^n: Standing Notation, let C⊆RnC\subseteq\mathbb{R}^{n} be convex and let f:C→Rf:C\to\mathbb{R} be a function.

Convex function. ff is convex if

f((1−t)x+ty)≤(1−t)f(x)+tf(y)for all x,y∈C and t∈[0,1],f\bigl((1-t)x+ty\bigr)\le(1-t)f(x)+tf(y)\qquad\text{for all }x,y\in C\text{ and }t\in[0,1],

the point (1−t)x+ty(1-t)x+ty lying in CC since it is in the segment [x,y][x,y], contained in CC by Segments and Convex Subsets of Rn\mathbb{R}^n (ii).
