The Lebesgue Space L²(μ;ℝⁿ)

L²(μ;ℝⁿ) is the set of classes of square-integrable ℝⁿ-valued functions under almost-everywhere equality, with the sum and scalar multiples of representatives and the inner product given by the integral of the dot product.

Statement

In the setting of Measurable Functions and the Lebesgue Integral: Standing Notation, let (X,F,μ)(X,\mathcal{F},\mu) be a measure space and let n∈Nn\in\mathbb{N}. L2(μ;Rn)\mathcal{L}^{2}(\mu;\mathbb{R}^{n}) is the set of square-integrable functions from XX to Rn\mathbb{R}^{n}, and f+gf+g, cfcf, f⋅gf\cdot g and the relation ∼\sim of almost-everywhere equality on L2(μ;Rn)\mathcal{L}^{2}(\mu;\mathbb{R}^{n}) are as in Square-Integrable Vector-Valued Functions: Components, Dot Products and Almost-Everywhere Equality (∼\sim is an equivalence relation by Square-Integrable Vector-Valued Functions: Components, Dot Products and Almost-Everywhere Equality (iv)).

The space. L2(μ;Rn)L^{2}(\mu;\mathbb{R}^{n}) is the quotient L2(μ;Rn)/∼\mathcal{L}^{2}(\mu;\mathbb{R}^{n})/{\sim}. For f∈L2(μ;Rn)f\in\mathcal{L}^{2}(\mu;\mathbb{R}^{n}), [f][f] is the equivalence class of ff under ∼\sim.

Addition and scalar multiplication. For f,g∈L2(μ;Rn)f,g\in\mathcal{L}^{2}(\mu;\mathbb{R}^{n}) and c∈Rc\in\mathbb{R},

[f]+[g]=[f+g],c[f]=[cf][f]+[g]=[f+g],\qquad c[f]=[cf]

(well defined by Square-Integrable Vector-Valued Functions: Components, Dot Products and Almost-Everywhere Equality (iii), Square-Integrable Vector-Valued Functions: Components, Dot Products and Almost-Everywhere Equality (v), Compatible Operations, Maps and Relations Pass to the Quotient (i), and Compatible Operations, Maps and Relations Pass to the Quotient (ii) applied to f↦cff\mapsto cf for each cc).

Inner product. For f,g∈L2(μ;Rn)f,g\in\mathcal{L}^{2}(\mu;\mathbb{R}^{n}),

⟨[f],[g]⟩=∫f⋅g dμ,\langle[f],[g]\rangle=\int f\cdot g\,d\mu,

the integral of f⋅gf\cdot g as an element of L1(μ)\mathcal{L}^{1}(\mu) (well defined by Square-Integrable Vector-Valued Functions: Components, Dot Products and Almost-Everywhere Equality (ii), Square-Integrable Vector-Valued Functions: Components, Dot Products and Almost-Everywhere Equality (v) and Equivalence Classes Partition the Set: Cover, Disjointness and Representatives; the Quotient Is a Set and the Canonical Projection Is a Surjection (iv), Equivalence Classes Partition the Set: Cover, Disjointness and Representatives; the Quotient Is a Set and the Canonical Projection Is a Surjection (v), Equivalence Classes Partition the Set: Cover, Disjointness and Representatives; the Quotient Is a Set and the Canonical Projection Is a Surjection (i)).
