Operations Preserving Convexity of Functions on Rn\mathbb{R}^n: Affine Functions, Sums, Nonnegative Multiples, Pointwise Suprema and Affine Substitution

Affine functions are convex, and sums, nonnegative multiples, pointwise suprema and compositions with affine maps of convex functions are convex.

Statement

In the setting of Convex Functions on Rn\mathbb{R}^n: Standing Notation, let C⊆RnC\subseteq\mathbb{R}^{n} be convex; convexity of functions is that of Convex Function on a Convex Subset of Rn\mathbb{R}^n (i).

Affine functions. For every a∈Rna\in\mathbb{R}^{n} and β∈R\beta\in\mathbb{R}, the function C→RC\to\mathbb{R}, x↦a⋅x+βx\mapsto a\cdot x+\beta, is convex.

Sums. If f,g:C→Rf,g:C\to\mathbb{R} are convex, then so is f+g:C→Rf+g:C\to\mathbb{R}, x↦f(x)+g(x)x\mapsto f(x)+g(x).

Nonnegative multiples. If f:C→Rf:C\to\mathbb{R} is convex and λ∈R\lambda\in\mathbb{R} with λ≥0\lambda\ge0, then λf:C→R\lambda f:C\to\mathbb{R}, x↦λf(x)x\mapsto\lambda f(x), is convex.

Pointwise suprema. Let F\mathcal{F} be a nonempty set of convex functions C→RC\to\mathbb{R} such that, for every x∈Cx\in C, the set {f(x):f∈F}\{f(x):f\in\mathcal{F}\} is bounded above. Then the function F:C→RF:C\to\mathbb{R},

F(x)=sup⁡{f(x):f∈F},F(x)=\sup\{f(x):f\in\mathcal{F}\},

is convex, the supremum existing by The Real Numbers Form an Ordered Field in Which Every Nonempty Set Bounded Above Has a Supremum (ii).

Affine substitution. Let m∈Nm\in\mathbb{N}, A∈Mn×m(R)A\in\mathcal{M}_{n\times m}(\mathbb{R}) and b∈Rnb\in\mathbb{R}^{n}, with the matrix-vector products AyAy, let f:C→Rf:C\to\mathbb{R} be convex, and let

C′={y∈Rm: Ay+b∈C},C'=\{y\in\mathbb{R}^{m}:\ Ay+b\in C\},

which is convex by Operations Preserving Convexity in Rn\mathbb{R}^n: Intersections, Translates, Scalar Multiples, Sums, Affine Images and Preimages, Closure and Interior (vii). Then the function C′→RC'\to\mathbb{R}, y↦f(Ay+b)y\mapsto f(Ay+b), is convex.
