Multivariable Calculus: Notation

Standing notation for first derivatives of functions on open subsets of RnR^n: dimensions, the open domain, component functions, standard basis vectors, open balls and the metrics for continuity.

Statement

Base. This setting extends Vector- and Matrix-Valued Functions on a Compact Interval: Standing Conventions and Routine Facts, Continued: Typed Arithmetic, Maps and Predicativity: their conventions and notation are in force.

Domain, components and balls. Unless stated otherwise, nn and mm denote natural numbers and UU denotes an open subset of Rn\mathbb{R}^{n}, open for dEd_{E} as in Euclidean Space and Real Matrices: Standing Notation (ii). For a function f:U→Rmf:U\to\mathbb{R}^{m} and k∈[m]k\in[m], its kk-th component map is fk:U→Rf_{k}:U\to\mathbb{R}, fk(x)=f(x)kf_{k}(x)=f(x)_{k}, as in Component Maps and Entry Maps (i). e1,…,ene_{1},\dots,e_{n} are the standard basis vectors of Rn\mathbb{R}^{n}. For a∈Rna\in\mathbb{R}^{n} and a real number r>0r>0, B(a,r)=BdE(a,r)B(a,r)=B_{d_{E}}(a,r) is the open ball in (Rn,dE)(\mathbb{R}^{n},d_{E}) with centre aa and radius rr.

Continuity. Continuity of a function defined on a subset of Rn\mathbb{R}^{n} with values in R\mathbb{R}, in Rm\mathbb{R}^{m} or in Mp×q(R)\mathcal{M}_{p\times q}(\mathbb{R}) (p,q∈Np,q\in\mathbb{N}) is understood for dEd_{E} on the domain and for the metrics of Vector- and Matrix-Valued Functions on a Compact Interval: Standing Conventions (iii) on the values.
