Weak-Star Compactness and Vague Convergence: Standing Notation

Standing notation for weak-star compactness in duals of separable normed spaces and for vague convergence of finite signed Borel measures: it extends the notation for the dual of Cc(X)C_c(X) and names the closed balls of a dual space.

Statement

Base. This setting extends The Dual of C_c(X): Standing Notation: its conventions and notation are in force.

Balls in a dual space. For a real normed space XX with dual space X∗X^{*}, ∥F∥∗\|F\|_{*} denotes the dual norm of F∈X∗F\in X^{*}, as in the base, and for a real number M≥0M\ge0

BM∗={F∈X∗:∥F∥∗≤M}.B^{*}_{M}=\{F\in X^{*}:\|F\|_{*}\le M\}.

X∗X^{*} carries the pointwise sum and scalar multiplication of The Dual of a Real Normed Space Is a Real Banach Space; Weak-Star Limits (i). Background: The Dual of a Real Normed Space Is a Real Banach Space; Weak-Star Limits.

Use. The background facts carried by (ii), and their elementary consequences, are used without further citation.
