Rational Tuples and Rational Matrices Approximating a Real Tuple or Matrix from Below and Above in Every Component

For a point of ℝⁿ, or a real p×q matrix, and a real δ>0 there are rational tuples, respectively tuples of rational tuples, whose components lie within δ strictly below, respectively strictly above, the corresponding components.

Statement

In the setting of Routine Facts Used Without Citation: Arithmetic, Maps, Predicativity and Indices, let κ:Q→R\kappa:\mathbb{Q}\to\mathbb{R} be the canonical embedding of The Real Numbers, with the Natural Numbers, Integers and Rationals Identified with Subsets of the Reals, and Completeness (iv). For a set SS and m∈Nm\in\mathbb{N}, SmS^{m} is the set of mm-tuples in SS, with the components xk=x(k)x_{k}=x(k) of x∈Smx\in S^{m} as in Tuples in a Set: the Set of n-Tuples and Their Components (iii); in particular Rm\mathbb{R}^{m} is Euclidean space. For p,q∈Np,q\in\mathbb{N}, (Qq)p(\mathbb{Q}^{q})^{p} is the set of pp-tuples in Qq\mathbb{Q}^{q}, and for a∈(Qq)pa\in(\mathbb{Q}^{q})^{p}, i∈[p]i\in[p] and j∈[q]j\in[q], aija_{ij} is the jj-th component of the ii-th component aia_{i} of aa; Mp×q(R)\mathcal{M}_{p\times q}(\mathbb{R}) is the set of real p×qp\times q matrices, with the entries AijA_{ij}.

Let n∈Nn\in\mathbb{N}, y∈Rny\in\mathbb{R}^{n} and δ∈R\delta\in\mathbb{R} with 0<δ0<\delta. There are a,b∈Qna,b\in\mathbb{Q}^{n} with

yi−δ<κ(ai)<yi<κ(bi)<yi+δfor every i∈[n].y_{i}-\delta<\kappa(a_{i})<y_{i}<\kappa(b_{i})<y_{i}+\delta\quad\text{for every }i\in[n].

Let p,q∈Np,q\in\mathbb{N}, A∈Mp×q(R)A\in\mathcal{M}_{p\times q}(\mathbb{R}) and δ∈R\delta\in\mathbb{R} with 0<δ0<\delta. There are a,b∈(Qq)pa,b\in(\mathbb{Q}^{q})^{p} with

Aij−δ<κ(aij)<Aij<κ(bij)<Aij+δfor all i∈[p] and j∈[q].A_{ij}-\delta<\kappa(a_{ij})<A_{ij}<\kappa(b_{ij})<A_{ij}+\delta\quad\text{for all }i\in[p]\text{ and }j\in[q].
