The Steinitz Exchange Lemma

In a vector space, the length of a linearly independent finite family is at most the length of any finite spanning family.

Statement

In the setting of Routine Facts, Continued: Typed Arithmetic, Maps and Predicativity, let KK, with ++, ⋅\cdot, 00 and 11, be a field, and let VV, with its addition and scalar multiplication, be a vector space over KK.

Independent families are no longer than spanning families. Let m,n∈N0m,n\in\mathbb{N}_{0}, let (u1,…,um)(u_{1},\dots,u_{m}) be a linearly independent mm-tuple in VV, and let (w1,…,wn)(w_{1},\dots,w_{n}) be an nn-tuple in VV that spans VV. Then m≤nm\leq n.
