Indicator Function of a Subset

The indicator function of a subset A of a set X is the real-valued map on X equal to 1 on A and 0 off A.

Statement

In the setting of Measure Spaces, Borel Sets and Lebesgue Measure on the Real Line: Standing Notation, let XX be a set and let A⊆XA\subseteq X.

The indicator function of AA is the map 1A:X→R\mathbf{1}_{A}:X\to\mathbb{R} with 1A(x)=1\mathbf{1}_{A}(x)=1 for every x∈Ax\in A and 1A(x)=0\mathbf{1}_{A}(x)=0 for every x∈Xx\in X with x∉Ax\notin A. It exists and is unique by Maps Defined by Cases (i), applied to the predicative condition x∈Ax\in A and the expressions 11 and 00, both elements of R\mathbb{R}.
