The Supporting Hyperplane Theorem in Rn\mathbb{R}^n

If x is not an interior point of a convex subset C of RnR^n, some unit vector a satisfies a·z ≤ a·x on C; if moreover x lies in the closure of C, a hyperplane through x supports C there.

Statement

In the setting of Separation in Rn\mathbb{R}^n: Standing Notation, let C⊆RnC\subseteq\mathbb{R}^{n} be convex, and let x∈Rnx\in\mathbb{R}^{n} with x∉int⁡Cx\notin\operatorname{int}C.

Unit normal. There is a∈Sa\in\mathbb{S} with

a⋅z≤a⋅xfor every z∈C.a\cdot z\le a\cdot x\qquad\text{for every }z\in C.

Supporting hyperplane. Let aa be as in (i). If x∈Cx\in C, the hyperplane H(a,a⋅x)H(a,a\cdot x) supports CC at xx.

Supporting hyperplane of the closure. Let aa be as in (i). If x∈cl⁡Cx\in\operatorname{cl}C, the hyperplane H(a,a⋅x)H(a,a\cdot x) supports cl⁡C\operatorname{cl}C at xx.
