Derivatives along Lines in ℝⁿ: the Line t ↦ x+th, and Partial Derivatives as Derivatives along Coordinate Axes

The line t ↦ x+th has derivative h at every point of an interval, and a partial derivative of a real function on an open subset of ℝⁿ is the same as the derivative of the function along the corresponding coordinate axis.

Statement

In the setting of Multivariable Calculus: Notation, let x∈Rnx\in\mathbb{R}^{n}, and let JJ be an interval containing two distinct points.

The derivative of the line. Let h∈Rnh\in\mathbb{R}^{n}. If γ:J→Rn\gamma:J\to\mathbb{R}^{n} satisfies γ(t)=x+th\gamma(t)=x+th for every t∈Jt\in J, then γ\gamma is differentiable at every t∈Jt\in J, with γ′(t)=h\gamma'(t)=h.

Partial derivatives give derivatives along an axis. Let F:U→RF:U\to\mathbb{R}, let i∈[n]i\in[n], and let φ:J→R\varphi:J\to\mathbb{R} satisfy x+tei∈Ux+te_{i}\in U and φ(t)=F(x+tei)\varphi(t)=F(x+te_{i}) for every t∈Jt\in J. Let s∈Js\in J and L∈RL\in\mathbb{R}. If the partial derivative ∂iF(x+sei)\partial_{i}F(x+se_{i}) exists and equals LL, then φ\varphi is differentiable at ss with φ′(s)=L\varphi'(s)=L.

Derivatives along an axis give partial derivatives. Let F:U→RF:U\to\mathbb{R} with x∈Ux\in U, let i∈[n]i\in[n] and L∈RL\in\mathbb{R}, let r>0r>0 be real, and let φ:(−r,r)→R\varphi:(-r,r)\to\mathbb{R}, on the open interval (−r,r)(-r,r), an interval containing two distinct points, satisfy x+tei∈Ux+te_{i}\in U and φ(t)=F(x+tei)\varphi(t)=F(x+te_{i}) for every t∈(−r,r)t\in(-r,r). If φ\varphi is differentiable at 00 with φ′(0)=L\varphi'(0)=L, then ∂iF(x)\partial_{i}F(x) exists and equals LL.
