The Continuous Functions with Compact Support Form a Real Normed Space under the Uniform Norm

Cc(X)C_c(X) with pointwise operations is a real vector space and the uniform norm makes it a real normed space; the uniform norm bounds every value and is the least nonnegative such bound, and convergence in it is uniform convergence.

Statement

In the setting of Locally Compact Metric Spaces and Compactly Supported Functions: Standing Notation, let (X,d)(X,d) be a metric space, and let Cc(X)C_{c}(X) carry the sum, the scalar multiplication and the uniform norm ∥⋅∥u\|\cdot\|_{u} of The Space of Continuous Functions with Compact Support and the Uniform Norm (ii) and The Space of Continuous Functions with Compact Support and the Uniform Norm (iii).

Vector space. Cc(X)C_{c}(X) is a real vector space; its zero vector is the constant function 00, and the negative of f∈Cc(X)f\in C_{c}(X) is (−1)f(-1)f.

Normed space. (Cc(X),∥⋅∥u)(C_{c}(X),\|\cdot\|_{u}) is a real normed space.

Bounds. For every f∈Cc(X)f\in C_{c}(X), ∣f(x)∣≤∥f∥u|f(x)|\le\|f\|_{u} for every x∈Xx\in X; and if C≥0C\ge0 is a real number with ∣f(x)∣≤C|f(x)|\le C for every x∈Xx\in X, then ∥f∥u≤C\|f\|_{u}\le C.

Uniform convergence. Let (fm)(f_{m}) be a sequence in Cc(X)C_{c}(X) and let f∈Cc(X)f\in C_{c}(X). Then

∥fm−f∥u→0\|f_{m}-f\|_{u}\to0

if and only if (fm)(f_{m}) converges uniformly to ff on XX.
