Hyperplanes and Half-Spaces in Rn\mathbb{R}^n

The hyperplane a·x = α in RnR^n for a nonzero normal a, with its two closed and two open half-spaces.

Statement

In the setting of Separation in Rn\mathbb{R}^n: Standing Notation, let a∈Rna\in\mathbb{R}^{n} with a≠0a\neq0, and let α∈R\alpha\in\mathbb{R}.

Hyperplane. The hyperplane with normal aa and level α\alpha is

H(a,α)={x∈Rn:a⋅x=α}.H(a,\alpha)=\{x\in\mathbb{R}^{n}:a\cdot x=\alpha\}.

Closed half-spaces. The closed half-spaces bounded by H(a,α)H(a,\alpha) are

H≤(a,α)={x∈Rn:a⋅x≤α}andH≥(a,α)={x∈Rn:a⋅x≥α}.H^{\le}(a,\alpha)=\{x\in\mathbb{R}^{n}:a\cdot x\le\alpha\}\qquad\text{and}\qquad H^{\ge}(a,\alpha)=\{x\in\mathbb{R}^{n}:a\cdot x\ge\alpha\}.

Open half-spaces. The open half-spaces bounded by H(a,α)H(a,\alpha) are

H<(a,α)={x∈Rn:a⋅x<α}andH>(a,α)={x∈Rn:a⋅x>α}.H^{<}(a,\alpha)=\{x\in\mathbb{R}^{n}:a\cdot x<\alpha\}\qquad\text{and}\qquad H^{>}(a,\alpha)=\{x\in\mathbb{R}^{n}:a\cdot x>\alpha\}.
