Rules for Integrals of Vector- and Matrix-Valued Functions

A measurable vector- or matrix-valued map is integrable exactly when its norm is; the integral is linear, commutes with multiplication by constant matrices and with dot products by constant vectors, and its norm is at most the integral of the norm.

Statement

In the settings of Measurable Functions and the Lebesgue Integral: Notation and Euclidean Space and Real Matrices: Standing Notation, let (X,F,μ)(X,\mathcal{F},\mu) be a measure space and let m,n,p,q,r,s∈Nm,n,p,q,r,s\in\mathbb{N}. Functions into Rn\mathbb{R}^{n} and into Rp×q\mathbb{R}^{p\times q} are combined pointwise: for functions f,g:X→Rnf,g:X\to\mathbb{R}^{n} and F,G:X→Rp×qF,G:X\to\mathbb{R}^{p\times q}, a,b∈Ra,b\in\mathbb{R}, a point u∈Rnu\in\mathbb{R}^{n} and matrices CC, DD of matching sizes, af+bgaf+bg, aF+bGaF+bG, CfCf, CFDCFD and u⋅fu\cdot f, with the dot product u⋅f(x)u\cdot f(x), are the functions

x↦af(x)+bg(x),x↦aF(x)+bG(x),x↦Cf(x),x↦(CF(x))D,x↦u⋅f(x),x\mapsto af(x)+bg(x),\quad x\mapsto aF(x)+bG(x),\quad x\mapsto Cf(x),\quad x\mapsto\bigl(CF(x)\bigr)D,\quad x\mapsto u\cdot f(x),

and ∥f∥\lVert f\rVert and ∥F∥\lVert F\rVert are the functions x↦∥f(x)∥x\mapsto\lVert f(x)\rVert and x↦∥F(x)∥x\mapsto\lVert F(x)\rVert from XX to R\mathbb{R}, with the Euclidean norm and the operator norm (these functions exist by Maps Formed Pointwise: Constant Maps, Pairs of Values, Maps Applied to Values, and Families of Maps (i), Maps Formed Pointwise: Constant Maps, Pairs of Values, Maps Applied to Values, and Families of Maps (iii) and Maps Formed Pointwise from Vector and Matrix Operations (i)).
