Linear Functional on a Linear Subspace

A real-valued function on a linear subspace of a real vector space is a linear functional if it is additive and commutes with real multiples.

Statement

In the setting of Separable Real Normed Spaces and Hahn–Banach: Notation, let VV be a real vector space, let WW be a linear subspace of VV, and let f:W→Rf:W\to\mathbb{R} be a function. The sums and multiples below lie in WW by Linear Subspace of a Real Vector Space (ii) and Linear Subspace of a Real Vector Space (iii).

Additivity. f(u+v)=f(u)+f(v)f(u+v)=f(u)+f(v) for all u,v∈Wu,v\in W.

Homogeneity. f(λu)=λf(u)f(\lambda u)=\lambda f(u) for all λ∈R\lambda\in\mathbb{R} and u∈Wu\in W.

Linear functional. ff is a linear functional on WW if it satisfies (i) and (ii). A linear functional on VV is one on the linear subspace W=VW=V (VV is a linear subspace of itself, Linear Subspace of a Real Vector Space (i), Linear Subspace of a Real Vector Space (ii) and Linear Subspace of a Real Vector Space (iii) holding because 0V∈V0_{V}\in V and the addition and scalar multiplication of VV take values in VV).
