Exponent Laws for Integer Powers in a Group

Integer powers in a group add and multiply exponents, invert by negating the exponent, distribute over products of commuting elements, and are preserved by group homomorphisms.

Statement

In the setting of Groups: Standing Notation, let GG be a group with identity ee, let g∈Gg\in G, and let m,n∈Zm,n\in\mathbb{Z}.

First power.

g1=g.g^{1}=g.

Powers of the identity.

en=e.e^{n}=e.

Sums of exponents.

gm+n=gmgn.g^{m+n}=g^{m}g^{n}.

Products of exponents.

(gm)n=gmn.(g^{m})^{n}=g^{mn}.

Inverses.

(gn)−1=g−n=(g−1)n.(g^{n})^{-1}=g^{-n}=(g^{-1})^{n}.

Commuting elements. Let h∈Gh\in G with gh=hggh=hg. Then

(gh)n=gnhn.(gh)^{n}=g^{n}h^{n}.

Homomorphisms. Let HH be a group and f:G→Hf:G\to H a group homomorphism. Then

f(gn)=f(g)n.f(g^{n})=f(g)^{n}.
