Rules for Derivatives of Functions on Open Subsets of ℝⁿ

Constant and affine functions and the coordinate functions are differentiable with the expected derivative matrices and gradients, and differentiability at a point is preserved by sums, scalar multiples, products and quotients, with the usual formulas.

Statement

In the setting of Multivariable Calculus: Notation, let nn, mm and UU be as in Multivariable Calculus: Notation (ii), and let a∈Ua\in U. (Df(a)Df(a) and ∇f(a)\nabla f(a) of functions differentiable at aa are as in The Derivative Is the Jacobian Matrix, and Is Unique (ii) and The Derivative Is the Jacobian Matrix, and Is Unique (i); sums, scalar multiples and products of functions are as in Pointwise Operations on Real-Valued Maps (i), formed in the same way for Rm\mathbb{R}^{m}-valued functions.)

Constant functions. For c∈Rmc\in\mathbb{R}^{m}, the constant function f:U→Rmf:U\to\mathbb{R}^{m}, f(x)=cf(x)=c, is differentiable at aa with Df(a)=0m×nDf(a)=0_{m\times n}. For c∈Rc\in\mathbb{R}, the constant function φ:U→R\varphi:U\to\mathbb{R}, φ(x)=c\varphi(x)=c, is differentiable at aa with ∇φ(a)=0\nabla\varphi(a)=0.

Affine functions. For B∈Mm×n(R)B\in\mathcal{M}_{m\times n}(\mathbb{R}) and c∈Rmc\in\mathbb{R}^{m}, the function f:U→Rmf:U\to\mathbb{R}^{m}, f(x)=Bx+cf(x)=Bx+c, is differentiable at aa with

Df(a)=B.Df(a)=B.

For v∈Rnv\in\mathbb{R}^{n} and c∈Rc\in\mathbb{R}, the function φ:U→R\varphi:U\to\mathbb{R}, φ(x)=v⋅x+c\varphi(x)=v\cdot x+c, is differentiable at aa with

∇φ(a)=v.\nabla\varphi(a)=v.

Coordinate functions. For i∈[n]i\in[n], the function πi:U→R\pi_{i}:U\to\mathbb{R}, πi(x)=xi\pi_{i}(x)=x_{i}, is differentiable at aa with ∇πi(a)=ei\nabla\pi_{i}(a)=e_{i}.

Sums and scalar multiples. Let f,g:U→Rmf,g:U\to\mathbb{R}^{m} be differentiable at aa, and let λ∈R\lambda\in\mathbb{R}. Then f+gf+g and λf\lambda f are differentiable at aa, and

D(f+g)(a)=Df(a)+Dg(a),D(λf)(a)=λ Df(a).D(f+g)(a)=Df(a)+Dg(a),\qquad D(\lambda f)(a)=\lambda\,Df(a).

Sums and scalar multiples, real-valued. Let f,g:U→Rf,g:U\to\mathbb{R} be differentiable at aa, and let λ∈R\lambda\in\mathbb{R}. Then f+gf+g and λf\lambda f are differentiable at aa, and

∇(f+g)(a)=∇f(a)+∇g(a),∇(λf)(a)=λ ∇f(a).\nabla(f+g)(a)=\nabla f(a)+\nabla g(a),\qquad \nabla(\lambda f)(a)=\lambda\,\nabla f(a).

Products. Let f,g:U→Rf,g:U\to\mathbb{R} be differentiable at aa. Then fgfg is differentiable at aa, and

∇(fg)(a)=f(a) ∇g(a)+g(a) ∇f(a).\nabla(fg)(a)=f(a)\,\nabla g(a)+g(a)\,\nabla f(a).

Reciprocals. Let g:U→Rg:U\to\mathbb{R} be differentiable at aa, with g(x)≠0g(x)\neq0 for every x∈Ux\in U. Then 1/g:U→R1/g:U\to\mathbb{R}, x↦1/g(x)x\mapsto1/g(x), is differentiable at aa, and

∇(1g)(a)=−1g(a)2 ∇g(a).\nabla\Bigl(\frac{1}{g}\Bigr)(a)=-\frac{1}{g(a)^{2}}\,\nabla g(a).

Quotients. Let f,g:U→Rf,g:U\to\mathbb{R} be differentiable at aa, with g(x)≠0g(x)\neq0 for every x∈Ux\in U. Then f/g:U→Rf/g:U\to\mathbb{R}, x↦f(x)/g(x)x\mapsto f(x)/g(x), is differentiable at aa, and

∇(fg)(a)=1g(a)2(g(a) ∇f(a)−f(a) ∇g(a)).\nabla\Bigl(\frac{f}{g}\Bigr)(a)=\frac{1}{g(a)^{2}}\bigl(g(a)\,\nabla f(a)-f(a)\,\nabla g(a)\bigr).
