Additive and Multiplicative Groups of Numbers

The integers, rationals, reals and complex numbers are abelian groups under addition, the nonzero rationals, reals and complex numbers and the positive reals are abelian groups under multiplication, the unit circle is a subgroup of the nonzero complex numbers, and the exponential is an isomorphism from (R,+) onto the positive reals and a homomorphism from (C,+) to the nonzero complex numbers.

Statement

In the settings of Groups: Standing Notation and Complex Analysis: Standing Notation, let exp⁡:C→C\exp:\mathbb{C}\to\mathbb{C} be the complex exponential function, and let (0,∞)={x∈R:x>0}(0,\infty)=\{x\in\mathbb{R}:x>0\} be the ray.

Additive groups. Each of Z\mathbb{Z}, Q\mathbb{Q}, R\mathbb{R} and C\mathbb{C}, with addition, is an abelian group, with identity 00 and with −x-x the inverse of xx.

Multiplicative groups. Each of Q∖{0}\mathbb{Q}\setminus\{0\}, R∖{0}\mathbb{R}\setminus\{0\}, (0,∞)(0,\infty) and C∖{0}\mathbb{C}\setminus\{0\}, with multiplication, is an abelian group, with identity 11 and with 1/x1/x the inverse of xx.

The circle group. The unit circle {z∈C:∣z∣=1}\{z\in\mathbb{C}:|z|=1\} is a subgroup of the group C∖{0}\mathbb{C}\setminus\{0\} of (ii).

The exponential. The function R→(0,∞)\mathbb{R}\to(0,\infty), x↦exp⁡R(x)x\mapsto\exp_{\mathbb{R}}(x), is an isomorphism from the additive group R\mathbb{R} of (i) onto the multiplicative group (0,∞)(0,\infty) of (ii), and the function C→C∖{0}\mathbb{C}\to\mathbb{C}\setminus\{0\}, z↦exp⁡zz\mapsto\exp z, is a homomorphism from the additive group C\mathbb{C} of (i) to the multiplicative group C∖{0}\mathbb{C}\setminus\{0\} of (ii):

exp⁡R(x+y)=exp⁡R(x)exp⁡R(y),exp⁡(z+w)=exp⁡z exp⁡w(x,y∈R, z,w∈C).\exp_{\mathbb{R}}(x+y)=\exp_{\mathbb{R}}(x)\exp_{\mathbb{R}}(y),\qquad \exp(z+w)=\exp z\,\exp w\qquad(x,y\in\mathbb{R},\ z,w\in\mathbb{C}).
