Composition of a Carathéodory–Lipschitz Function with a Measurable Path

Along a measurable path x, a Carathéodory–Lipschitz right-hand side F gives a measurable function r ↦ F(r, x(r)), integrable when x is bounded, in particular when x is continuous, and Lipschitz in the path pointwise.

Statement

In the setting of Integrals over Subintervals of a Closed Interval: Notation, assume the axiom of dependent choice. Let Λ∈R\Lambda\in\mathbb{R} with Λ≥0\Lambda\ge0, let F∈CLΛF\in\mathrm{CL}_{\Lambda}, the set of Carathéodory–Lipschitz functions with constant Λ\Lambda, and for a function x:[a,b]→Rnx:[a,b]\to\mathbb{R}^{n} let F(⋅,x)F(\cdot,x) be the function r↦F(r,x(r))r\mapsto F(r,x(r)) on [a,b][a,b].

Measurable paths. If x:[a,b]→Rnx:[a,b]\to\mathbb{R}^{n} is measurable, then F(⋅,x)F(\cdot,x) is measurable.

Bounded measurable paths. If x:[a,b]→Rnx:[a,b]\to\mathbb{R}^{n} is measurable and M∈RM\in\mathbb{R} satisfies ∥x(r)∥≤M\lVert x(r)\rVert\le M for every r∈[a,b]r\in[a,b], then

∥F(r,x(r))∥≤∥F(r,0)∥+ΛM(r∈[a,b]),\bigl\lVert F\bigl(r,x(r)\bigr)\bigr\rVert\le\lVert F(r,0)\rVert+\Lambda M\qquad\bigl(r\in[a,b]\bigr),

and F(⋅,x)∈L1([a,b];Rn)F(\cdot,x)\in\mathcal{L}^{1}([a,b];\mathbb{R}^{n}).

Continuous paths. If x:[a,b]→Rnx:[a,b]\to\mathbb{R}^{n} is continuous on [a,b][a,b], then F(⋅,x)∈L1([a,b];Rn)F(\cdot,x)\in\mathcal{L}^{1}([a,b];\mathbb{R}^{n}).

Difference bound. For all functions x,y:[a,b]→Rnx,y:[a,b]\to\mathbb{R}^{n},

∥F(r,x(r))−F(r,y(r))∥≤Λ ∥x(r)−y(r)∥(r∈[a,b]).\bigl\lVert F\bigl(r,x(r)\bigr)-F\bigl(r,y(r)\bigr)\bigr\rVert\le\Lambda\,\lVert x(r)-y(r)\rVert\qquad\bigl(r\in[a,b]\bigr).
