Solutions of an Initial Value Problem Are the Continuous Solutions of the Integral Equation

For a continuous right-hand side F, a map x on [a,c] solves x' = F(t,x), x(a) = xi, exactly when it is continuous and x(t) = xi + integral from a to t of F(s,x(s)); along a continuous x the integrand is continuous.

Statement

In the settings of Single-Variable Calculus on an Interval and Euclidean Space and Real Matrices: Standing Notation, let a,b,c∈Ra,b,c\in\mathbb{R} with a<c≤ba<c\le b, and let n,p,q∈Nn,p,q\in\mathbb{N}. R×Rn\mathbb{R}\times\mathbb{R}^{n} carries the product metric of dRd_{\mathbb{R}} and dEd_{E}, and R×Mp×q(R)\mathbb{R}\times\mathcal{M}_{p\times q}(\mathbb{R}) the product metric of dRd_{\mathbb{R}} and dp×qd_{p\times q}, metrics by The Product Metric is a Metric (i). Continuity of maps on [a,c][a,c] refers to dRd_{\mathbb{R}} on [a,c][a,c] and to dEd_{E} on Rn\mathbb{R}^{n} and dp×qd_{p\times q} on Mp×q(R)\mathcal{M}_{p\times q}(\mathbb{R}), as in Continuous Map Between Metric Spaces (ii). Integrals of maps [a,c]→Rn[a,c]\to\mathbb{R}^{n} and [a,c]→Mp×q(R)[a,c]\to\mathcal{M}_{p\times q}(\mathbb{R}), and their being defined, are as in Riemann Integral of a Vector-Valued or Matrix-Valued Map (ii) and Riemann Integral of a Vector-Valued or Matrix-Valued Map (iv).

Let F:[a,b]×Rn→RnF:[a,b]\times\mathbb{R}^{n}\to\mathbb{R}^{n} be continuous on [a,b]×Rn[a,b]\times\mathbb{R}^{n}, for the product metric of dRd_{\mathbb{R}} and dEd_{E} on R×Rn\mathbb{R}\times\mathbb{R}^{n} and for dEd_{E} on Rn\mathbb{R}^{n}, and let x:[a,c]→Rnx:[a,c]\to\mathbb{R}^{n} be continuous on [a,c][a,c]. Then the map [a,c]→Rn[a,c]\to\mathbb{R}^{n}, s↦F(s,x(s))s\mapsto F(s,x(s)), is continuous on [a,c][a,c]. The same holds for an F:[a,b]×Mp×q(R)→Mp×q(R)F:[a,b]\times\mathcal{M}_{p\times q}(\mathbb{R})\to\mathcal{M}_{p\times q}(\mathbb{R}) continuous on [a,b]×Mp×q(R)[a,b]\times\mathcal{M}_{p\times q}(\mathbb{R}), for the product metric of dRd_{\mathbb{R}} and dp×qd_{p\times q} on R×Mp×q(R)\mathbb{R}\times\mathcal{M}_{p\times q}(\mathbb{R}) and for dp×qd_{p\times q} on Mp×q(R)\mathcal{M}_{p\times q}(\mathbb{R}), and a map X:[a,c]→Mp×q(R)X:[a,c]\to\mathcal{M}_{p\times q}(\mathbb{R}) continuous on [a,c][a,c] in place of FF and xx.

Let F:[a,b]×Rn→RnF:[a,b]\times\mathbb{R}^{n}\to\mathbb{R}^{n} be continuous on [a,b]×Rn[a,b]\times\mathbb{R}^{n}, for the product metric of dRd_{\mathbb{R}} and dEd_{E} on R×Rn\mathbb{R}\times\mathbb{R}^{n} and for dEd_{E} on Rn\mathbb{R}^{n}, let ξ∈Rn\xi\in\mathbb{R}^{n} and let x:[a,c]→Rnx:[a,c]\to\mathbb{R}^{n}. Then xx is a solution on [a,c][a,c] of the initial value problem of The Initial Value Problem for a First-Order System of Ordinary Differential Equations (i) with right-hand side FF and initial value ξ\xi if and only if xx is continuous on [a,c][a,c] and, for every t∈[a,c]t\in[a,c], the integral ∫atF(s,x(s)) ds\int_{a}^{t}F(s,x(s))\,ds is defined and

x(t)=ξ+∫atF(s,x(s)) ds.x(t)=\xi+\int_{a}^{t}F\bigl(s,x(s)\bigr)\,ds .

Let F:[a,b]×Mp×q(R)→Mp×q(R)F:[a,b]\times\mathcal{M}_{p\times q}(\mathbb{R})\to\mathcal{M}_{p\times q}(\mathbb{R}) be continuous on [a,b]×Mp×q(R)[a,b]\times\mathcal{M}_{p\times q}(\mathbb{R}), for the product metric of dRd_{\mathbb{R}} and dp×qd_{p\times q} on R×Mp×q(R)\mathbb{R}\times\mathcal{M}_{p\times q}(\mathbb{R}) and for dp×qd_{p\times q} on Mp×q(R)\mathcal{M}_{p\times q}(\mathbb{R}), let Ξ∈Mp×q(R)\Xi\in\mathcal{M}_{p\times q}(\mathbb{R}) and let X:[a,c]→Mp×q(R)X:[a,c]\to\mathcal{M}_{p\times q}(\mathbb{R}). Then XX is a solution on [a,c][a,c] of the initial value problem of The Initial Value Problem for a First-Order System of Ordinary Differential Equations (ii) with right-hand side FF and initial value Ξ\Xi if and only if XX is continuous on [a,c][a,c] and, for every t∈[a,c]t\in[a,c], the integral ∫atF(s,X(s)) ds\int_{a}^{t}F(s,X(s))\,ds is defined and

X(t)=Ξ+∫atF(s,X(s)) ds.X(t)=\Xi+\int_{a}^{t}F\bigl(s,X(s)\bigr)\,ds .
