Continuous Functions with Compact Support: the Zero Function, Closure under Operations, Vanishing off the Support, Existence of the Maximum Modulus, and Uniform Continuity

Sums, scalar multiples, products, absolute values, maxima and minima of continuous compactly supported real functions on a metric space are again continuous with compact support; such a function vanishes off its support, and the set of its absolute values together with 0 has a greatest element.

Statement

In the setting of Locally Compact Metric Spaces and Compactly Supported Functions: Standing Notation, let (X,d)(X,d) be a metric space.

Zero. The constant function 00 on XX is continuous and has compact support: its support is empty.

Let now f,g:X→Rf,g:X\to\mathbb{R} be continuous functions with compact support, and let c∈Rc\in\mathbb{R}.

Operations. The functions f+gf+g, cfcf, fgfg, ∣f∣|f|, max⁡(f,g)\max(f,g) and min⁡(f,g)\min(f,g) are continuous and have compact support, with

supp⁡(f+g), supp⁡max⁡(f,g), supp⁡min⁡(f,g)⊆supp⁡f∪supp⁡g,supp⁡(cf)⊆supp⁡f,\operatorname{supp}(f+g),\ \operatorname{supp}\max(f,g),\ \operatorname{supp}\min(f,g)\subseteq\operatorname{supp}f\cup\operatorname{supp}g,\qquad\operatorname{supp}(cf)\subseteq\operatorname{supp}f, supp⁡(fg)⊆supp⁡f∩supp⁡g,supp⁡∣f∣=supp⁡f.\operatorname{supp}(fg)\subseteq\operatorname{supp}f\cap\operatorname{supp}g,\qquad\operatorname{supp}|f|=\operatorname{supp}f.

Vanishing off the support. f(x)=0f(x)=0 for every x∈X∖supp⁡fx\in X\setminus\operatorname{supp}f.

Maximum. The subset {0}∪{∣f(x)∣:x∈X}\{0\}\cup\{|f(x)|:x\in X\} of R\mathbb{R} has a greatest element.

Uniform continuity. ff is uniformly continuous.
