The Scaling Set of an Open Convex Neighbourhood of the Origin Has an Infimum

For an open convex set U containing 0 in a real normed space and a point x, the set of t > 0 with x/t in U contains every t > ‖x‖/r when the ball of radius r about 0 lies in U, is closed upwards, and so has a nonnegative infimum.

Statement

In the setting of Separable Real Normed Spaces and Hahn–Banach: Notation, let XX be a real normed space with zero vector 0X0_{X}, let U⊆XU\subseteq X be open and convex with 0X∈U0_{X}\in U, and for x∈Xx\in X let

Tx={t∈R:t>0 and t−1x∈U}.T_{x}=\{t\in\mathbb{R}:t>0\text{ and }t^{-1}x\in U\}.

Large scalings. There is a real r>0r>0 with B(0X,r)⊆UB(0_{X},r)\subseteq U. For every such rr and every x∈Xx\in X, every real t>r−1∥x∥t>r^{-1}\lVert x\rVert lies in TxT_{x}.

Closed upwards. For x∈Xx\in X, if s∈Txs\in T_{x} and t>st>s, then t∈Txt\in T_{x}.

Existence of the infimum. For every x∈Xx\in X, TxT_{x} is nonempty and bounded below, with 00 as a lower bound; hence it has an infimum, and inf⁡Tx≥0\inf T_{x}\ge0.
